2 Hello from the Careers Hub Team This booklet has been produced by the Greater Manchester NHS Careers Hub in cooperation with a number local NHS trusts who we work in partnership with. The hub works closely with lots of NHS trusts and organisations in the Greater Manchester area to provide learners and potential NHS employees with the information they need to develop their careers. Sue Leo What s this booklet about? This booklet is an introductory guide to apprenticeships in the NHS and it gives information on a number of local employers who are currently recruiting apprentices. Why does this booklet benefit me? It will give you an insight into the different NHS employers in Greater Manchester and why an apprentice with them might be good for you, as well as learning about their values and the exciting apprenticeships they have to offer right now! What other information will I get from the booklet? We ve also got some guides to searching for NHS apprenticeship vacancies as well as useful links to resources that will help you to find the right apprenticeship for you! You can contact the hub team by ing: careers.hub@cmft.nhs.uk What is a trust? A National Health Service trust is an organisation within the NHS generally serving either a geographical area or a specialised function. Some Trusts will run hospitals, often known as acute trusts, where some may run mental health or community services. Some trusts run a combination of services. There are 14 trusts providing services in Greater Manchester and in some cases there may be several trusts providing different services to residents of a specific area. You ll find information relating to many of these organisations in this booklet. What if I need to know more? There are contact details for many of the trusts that we work with contained in the booklet but we d also like to encourage you to get in contact with the Careers Hub team if you need further information or are unsure how to proceed. 2

3 Apprentices in the NHS Why work for the NHS? Working in the NHS gives you the ability to improve the lives of others by supporting the care of patients and carers who depend on the services we provide. There are also lots of employee benefits such as progressive rates of pay, on the job training and a great pension scheme. Not all the staff working in the NHS are front-line clinicians like doctors and nurses. We have IT professionals, accountants, engineers, scientists and many more professionals who come together to deliver the best experience and outcome possible for our patients. The NHS is the largest employer in Europe with over 1.2 million employees in the United Kingdom. There are opportunities to work in 100s of organisations across the country in over 350 different job roles. Whatever skills you have, there is probably a job that will suit them in the NHS and an apprenticeship might be the perfect way to start your career with us. How do I know if an Apprenticeship in the NHS for Me? Apprenticeships provide routes into a variety of careers in the NHS and are an excellent opportunity to earn, gain work experience and achieve nationally recognised qualifications at the same time, with many different areas of work to consider. An apprenticeship in the NHS isn t like going to college or University, as an apprentice you will be doing a real job in a real place getting paid for it! You will have responsibilities to your employer and your colleagues and you will be working as part of a team in a great organisation. The responsibility you have whilst you re learning on the job means you will develop skills very quickly whilst being supported by your team in the NHS. Whilst your learning in your NHS workplace you may also go on day or block release to a training centre or college, working towards recognised competence and knowledge qualifications and developing your skills in Maths and English if needed. As an Apprentice, how many hours will I work and what is the rate of pay? As an apprentice you will be required to work at least 30 hours per week, If you are 16 to 18 or 19+ and in your first year of an apprenticeship, you should receive at least the National Minimum Wage rate for apprentices ( 3.40 an hour) after your first year you will be entitled to at least the National Minimum rate for your age and will also receive holiday pay whilst you are on the apprenticeship programme. 3
