Call to Order Chairperson, Beth Herman, made introductions of new WIB members Daneea Badio (City of Marietta), N Jeri Nantambu-Bell (CHP International/Job Corps), Patricia Kellner (Hooters of America), Gloria Kusmik (GDOL), Kimberly Roberts (Cobb County CDBG). The meeting was called to order at 12:00 p.m. II. Review and Approval of Prior Meeting Minutes Chairperson, Beth Herman, asked the board to review the minutes from the February 21, 2012 meeting. Motion made to approve the February 21, 2012 meeting minutes was made by Patricia Harris and further seconded by Frances Roberson. The motion subsequently carried. Review and Approval of Consent Agenda John Helton presented the following consent agenda items (previously approved by the executive committee) to the full board of directors: A. To authorize Training Provider Approvals (Background: One-Stop Operator approvals for new training providers and programs previously approved by Committee on 4/17/12). Motion made to approve the Consent Agenda by Sandy Miller and further seconded by Jean Rode. (Nineteen members voted yea and there were no nays).

Guest Presentation: Petra Young (Wellstar) & Cinda Herndon King, United Way/Atlanta CareerRise Presentation: Healthcare Careers Workforce Partnership WellStar Health System & CobbWorks School at Work Initiative Herndon-King provided background on Atlanta CareerRise program. The presentation included information on unemployment issues in the Metro Atlanta area due to the recession and addressing improvement for the matter. Some of the topics included employer hiring, employee skill development, and dislocated youth. CareerRise plans to implement a program called the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, a model developed by Jobs for the Future and the Council on Foundations. They are disseminating this model across the country which involves regional funding collaboratives. The strategy involves workforce partnerships for employers, career advancement for employees, and changing systems to increase its effectiveness for low-skilled, low-income individuals. Petra Young stated Wellstar Health System will be administering career development and training classes for individuals interested in furthering their career in healthcare. Wellstar will also be the first organization to work with CareerRise. Motion made to accept the grant in the amount of $124,738 from the United Way and Memorandum of Understanding from Wellstar by Frances Roberson and further seconded by Bryant McDaniel. (Nineteen members voted yea and there were no nays). IV. Youth Updates Lisa Davis provided an update on the youth program. She stated Communities in Schools and Paxen programs are up and running. Communities in Schools hired three staff members that have been active in recruiting to get students enrolled. Paxen started its first class for the accelerated GED program and twelve students are involved so far. Site and file reviews will be forthcoming in the next month to ensure the targeted recruitment number of 75 students for Communities in Schools, and 96 for Paxen is met between now and September V. Other Beth Herman, recently appointed member of the Governor s Workforce Board will attend the first meeting for the Dislocated Worker s Committee after today s WIB meeting. Beth also enlightened the members on the Year-Up Program, in which she is affiliated with. Year-Up is a program that is targeted to assist inner city urban youth ages in giving them a year up to focus on their career. The first six months of the program is an IT based curriculum and the last six months is a work internship. Herman stated there is a high rate of placement through several companies (Bank of America, SunTrust, and Genuine Auto Parts). She invited the members to see what the program is about and encouraged them to become mentors or make a donation to the Year- Up program. VI. Adjourn After hearing no other business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:53 p.m.
