Pharmacy Management Software for Pharmacy Technicians Introduction to Visual SuperScript ISBN: Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc.
Visual SuperScript (VSS) VSS developed an educational version of their pharmacy management software system to process prescriptions/medication orders, print labels, and track inventory. This software is similar to what is used in community and institutional pharmacies. VSS is sold exclusively within the educational market by Elsevier with a lab manual: Pharmacy Management Software for Pharmacy Technicians A Worktext. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 2
How does the Worktext work with VSS? Labs introduce an application or task to complete within the software. Each lab includes additional tasks to further develop the students understanding of the skills covered. Concepts covered in labs build on each other. Comprehensive exercises and appendices bring all of the concepts together and test competencies. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 3
Practice Areas Covered in VSS Community Pharmacy Practice Retail Nursing home Institutional Pharmacy Practice Intravenous therapy Total parenteral nutrition Chemotherapy Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 4
How will we use VSS in the classroom? Incorporating a pharmacy management system bridges the didactic content of your program with the hands-on laboratory content. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 5
Community Pharmacy Practice Interpret prescriptions and prepare or process the medications from the labels they have printed. Role play customer service scenarios with printed retail labels and visual drug identification. Process refill authorizations and prior approvals. Perform inventory functions and third-party billing. Maintain electronic patient profiles and incorporate medication safety and error prevention with computerized record keeping. Perform batch refills and complete reporting. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 6
Institutional Pharmacy Practice Interpret institutional orders and create IV labels. Perform necessary calculations, use references for dilution and storage information, and then prepare the various IV s using aseptic technique. Develop inpatient profiles and interpret institutional orders from sample orders provided. Use chemotherapy and TPN sample orders to prepare specialty IV s using proper aseptic technique. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 7
How does VSS fulfill the ASHP Model Curriculum? VSS provides a computerized application for recordkeeping and label processing before experiential rotations. VSS simulates actual practice in both community and institutional settings. Students can perform functions and gain knowledge in error prevention, medication management, inventory control, and insurance billing. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 8
How does VSS fulfill the ASHP Model Curriculum? (Continued) Students can role play customer service, simulated direct patient care, and collect payments. Students can prepare IV products using proper packaging, techniques, and labeling criteria using sample orders provided. Labs reinforce didactic content coverage regarding calculations, pharmacology and disease information, and terminology skills to complete lessons and additional exercises and assessments. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 9
Documentation Instructors and students can document completion such as printed labels, products, and workbook exercises for individual student portfolios to show successful completion of required competencies and assessments. A certificate of completion is available on Evolve. Copyright 2012 by Mosby, an affiliate of Elsevier Inc. 10
