2 Employment Preference for University Fresh Graduates in 2013 For a preview of preference in hiring university fresh graduates in 2013, ejobplus.com collected data from a representative sample of 436 respondents via telephone interviews. Each respondent was asked a standard question: Will you hire university fresh graduates in 2013? The data collected were statistically scaled up to arrive at the following findings. Respondents were asked a follow-up question: What salary do you offer to fresh graduates? Distribution of salary adjustment rate was given rise by data collected from companies that have definite pay inclination. General Distribution of Salary Offered to Fresh Graduates The majority (64%) of employers reported to offer HK$10,000-13,000 to university graduates. 3 Company Size Comparisons Companies in Hong Kong can be divided into 3 sub-groups according to their sizes as follows: Small size company s total number of employees less than 50 Medium size company s total number of employees from 50 to 200 Large size company s total number of employees more than 200 Employment Preference for Fresh Graduates of Companies of Different Sizes A large percentage (78%) of large-size companies reported to have plans to employ 2013 new graduates. On the other hand, there is also a large proportion of small-size companies (79%) do not prefer to do so. Employers who go for <HK$10,000 and HK$10,000-13,000 both make up 45% of the group. The majority of employers from medium- and large-size companies would offer HK$10,000-13,000 to fresh graduates, with large-size companies leaning more towards higher ranges. There are 7% and respondents who consider paying HK13,000-16,000 and above HK$16,000 respectively. Page 2

However, for other business sectors, more than half employers would rather not to hire 2013 new graduates. Most conservative orientation towards hiring fresh graduates is found in the Logistics, Trading & Manufacturing sector, with 64% saying that they have no such recruitment plan. Besides, 53% and 56% of employers from the Administration & Business Support and Banking & Financial Services sectors preferred not to employ new graduates respectively. Page 3

5 Distribution of Salary Offer to University Fresh Graduates Among Five Business Sectors Most companies across all five business sectors offer a salary range of HK$10,000-13,000 to new graduates, with greatest proportion found in the Wholesale & Retail sector (79%). Highest percentage of <HK$10,000 monthly pay offer is found in the Banking & Financial Services sector, making up 29% of the sector. Salary offer by the Logistics, Trading & Manufacturing and Wholesale & Retail sectors also leans towards the lower end, with 25% and only pay less than HK$10,000 to fresh graduates. On the other hand, employers from the Professional Services sector are willing to offer higher pay to fresh graduates. 2 of them would offer monthly salary of HK$13,000-16,000, and 3 of them would even offer more than HK$16,000. 6 Further analysis in the Professional Services sector The Professional Services sector is further divided into 5 sub-sectors: Accounting & Auditing (AA) Advertising, Marketing & Design (AMD) IT & Telecommunications (ITT) Legal Services (LS) Property & Construction (PC) Recruitment Preference for University Fresh Graduates in Five Sub-sectors % 57% 22% 39% 39% 6% 1 12% 41% 53% % 63% AA AMD ITT LS PC Strong preference for hiring university graduates is found in the Accounting & Auditing, the IT & Telecommunications and the Property & Construction sub-sectors, respectively 57%, 53% and 63%. However, the Advertising, Marketing & Design and the Legal Services sub-sector hold rather conservative views about employing fresh graduates. In the Advertising, Marketing & Design sub-sector, employers who reported to have hiring plans for university new graduates in 2013 make up 39%, which is the same percentage as those who did not. As much as 6 respondents from the Legal Services sub-sector do not have such hiring plans. No Yes Page 5

7 Distribution of Salary Offer to University Fresh Graduates Among Five Business Sub-sectors Although the salary offer falls within the range of HK$10,000-13,000 in most cases, the Accounting & Auditing and the Legal Services sub-sector provide a rather harsh staring condition to new graduates. Most employers from these sub-sectors, respectively 75% and 67%, only offer a monthly pay of HK$10,000 or less. There is a larger proportion of employers from the Property & Construction sub-sector who are willing to offer higher salary range to new graduates. Respectively 2 and 3 reported to offer HK$13,000-16,000 and HK$16,000 or more.
