MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER Exciting things are happening in Malaysia. In little over two years, The Lost Food Project (TLFP) has grown from a handful of volunteers collecting boxes of surplus groceries to an established operation, providing thousands upon thousands of vulnerable persons with nutritious food and addressing needless waste in the food industry. The idea to rescue lost food in Malaysia came about in The supermarkets and manufacturers I met with were needlessly sending good food to landfill; meanwhile charities were buying food or asking people to sponsor feeding programmes. I knew we could make a big impact: in February 2016, TLFP signed the first surplus food donation supermarket contract with GIANT. Now is a unique opportunity to bring about change within Malaysia and address the devastating environmental consequences of food overproduction and waste. We know how important it is to develop a Strategic Plan for TLFP, which delivers on our mission to eliminate hunger in Malaysia. It is an enormous credit and testament to the commitment of our team of volunteers and staff that TLFP has grown its operation from its humble beginnings to an organisation tackling some of the biggest issues of today; food poverty and environmental sustainability; at the same time, reducing cost for both industry and the government. At the core of our existence is the belief that no one should ever be hungry. We support individuals regardless of age, disability, ethnic or religious group, and we do not tolerate any form of discrimination. TLFP is committed to tackling the United Nation s Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs). We do this by working in collaboration with key partners, government and industry stakeholders. We also take great pride in our education work, public awareness campaigns and programmes targeting Malaysia s urban poor. Our progression has led to a structured workforce, but we will always be dependent on the kindness of our volunteers and the generosity of our financial benefactors. Together with like-minded people and our Strategic Plan, we can work towards ensuring transparency, accountability and good governance, and a positive future for everybody. Suzanne Mooney, Founder of The Lost Food Project (TLFP) 4 5

INTRODUCTION We are pleased to present our first Strategic Plan, which is the result of a timely and rigorous planning process. This document outlines our commitment to growth over the next three years. We now have a vision of where we want to be, an assessment of where we are now and a set of criteria to measure our progress. We have defined values that will prescribe how we will operate and have developed a list of strategies and priorities that will equip us to move forward. Our programmes include redistributing quality surplus food from several supermarket chains and multinational food manufacturers, which would otherwise go to landfills, to PPR (People s Housing Project) residents and approximately 50 vetted charities. Rescuing and distributing this food means our charities and PPR residents can redirect their limited resources to pay for other essentials like healthcare and education. Through our programmes we hope to make an enormous difference in Malaysia both in terms of eliminating hunger and helping to protect our environment. 6 7

WHO WE ARE The Lost Food Project is a nonprofit organisation in Malaysia that rescues quality, nutritious food that would otherwise end up in landfill, and redistributes this food and other essential items to those who need it most regardless of religion, gender, age, disability or ethnic group. 8 9

OUR VISION OUR MISSION TOGETHER WE CAN ELIMINATE HUNGER IN MALAYSIA. Our Vision is a statement of what we aspire to, why we exist and the impact we want to have on society. Together, and only through the efforts of all our supporters, volunteers and partners, will our goals become reality. WE ARE MALAYSIA S LEADING FOOD BANK DEDICATED TO RESCUING AND REDISTRIBUTING QUALITY SURPLUS FOOD TO THE PEOPLE WHO NEED IT MOST

SOME OF OUR STUDENTS WERE FOUND TO BE ANAEMIC. WITH TLFP S SUPPLY OF GREEN VEGETABLES, TOGETHER WITH OUR NORMAL DIET, A RECENT MEDICAL SURVEY SHOWED NO ANAEMIA [IN] STUDENTS. Phuspa Ideas Academy OUR VALUES PASSIONATE We are passionate about eliminating hunger in Malaysia; this is what unites us and inspires us. THRIFTY & GENEROUS We use resources wisely and with the best interest of others at heart. FAIR We treat everyone impartially; we believe that we are all fundamentally the same

THE PROBLEMS WE ARE TACKLING HUNGER Globally, 800 million people struggle with hunger every day. In Malaysia, 99.7% of children in low cost flats (PPR) live in relative poverty, whilst 7% live in absolute poverty. At TLFP we currently provide an average of 33,000 meals per week to PPR residents and charities that are most in need. FOOD WASTE Roughly 1/3 of food produced in the world gets wasted. In Malaysia, 3,000 tonnes of edible food is thrown away each day. At TLFP we currently rescue an average of 10 tonnes of food per week from going into landfill. SUSTAINABILITY Food production is responsible for 25% of global greenhouse gas emissions (e.g. CO2) and 75% of annual deforestation. In Malaysia, the government has pledged to achieve 45% CO2 reduction by At TLFP, we currently prevent a weekly average of 19 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering our atmosphere by diverting food waste

OUR IMPACT TO DATE We have rescued 564,467kg of surplus food from 12 food donors. 3,000 TONNES OF EDIBLE FOOD IS THROWN AWAY EACH DAY IN MALAYSIA. Delivering to 48 charities & 7,510 families living in public low-cost housing. Enough to provide 1,948,224 meals to those most in need. Preventing 1,110,488kg of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere. * Figures as of 31 August

WHAT WE WILL ACCOMPLISH Goal 1 Establish a highly effective food donor and recipient network. WE HAVE RESCUED ENOUGH FOOD TO PROVIDE NEARLY 2 MILLION NUTRITIOUS MEALS. Goal 2 Build organisational capacity. Goal 3 Ensure operational excellence and enhanced services. Goal 4 Establish an efficient and sustainable funding model. Goal 5 Inspire community engagement and advocacy

DUE TO THE LARGE QUANTITY OF DONATED VEGETABLES, THE AMOUNT OF MONEY THAT WE HAVE TO SPEND ON VEGETABLES HAS DROPPED BY AS MUCH AS 70-80% COMPARED TO THIS TIME LAST YEAR. Fred Assumption Soup Kitchen 20 21

Goal 1 ESTABLISH A HIGHLY EFFECTIVE FOOD DONOR AND RECIPIENT NETWORK Objectives Grow and develop food donor relationships to maximise donation opportunities. Better understand and respond to the needs of our beneficiaries to maximise resources. Expand the number of beneficiaries we serve. Strategic Results By 2021: We will have tripled the amount of food we rescue in order to provide approximately 100,000 meals per week. 100% of beneficiaries will have been engaged in a feedback system to better understand and respond to their needs. We will operate in 3 new states in Malaysia

Goal 2 BUILD ORGANISATIONAL CAPACITY Objectives Build an appropriate human resource structure to support our growth and sustainability goals. Grow our volunteer network. Maintain governance and ensure appropriate communication structures are in place. Strategic Results By 2021: 100% of lead staff positions will be filled and supporting management processes will be in place. An effective volunteer management programme will have been established that focuses on recruiting and retaining volunteers. Executive and management committees will be in place that improve communication and help inform decision-making

Goal 3 ENSURE OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE AND ENHANCED SERVICES Objectives Develop departmental plans, standard operating procedures, guidelines and policies in order to achieve our strategic plan and guide our ways of working. Support continuous improvement in innovation and logistics in order to ensure sustainability and scalability. Adopt responsive and durable web and data solutions. Strategic Results By 2021: Every department will have established annual plans that align to the strategic plan and include corresponding SOPs, guidelines or policies. Appropriate innovative, continuous improvement or logistics solutions will have been purchased or developed. TLFP website will have been restructured to reflect the strategic plan and rebranding and appropriate new databases will have been put in place across the organisation

Goal 4 ESTABLISH AN EFFICIENT AND SUSTAINABLE FUNDING MODEL Objectives Steward financial resources effectively. Better understand donor markets in order to maximise funding opportunities. Ensuring effective donor management to inspire loyalty and attract a new generation of donors. Strategic Results By 2021: Charitable tax exemption status will have been granted. The fundraising strategy, identified in the Marketing Communications Strategy, will have been implemented. We will have increased our annual revenue and contracted multi-year funding agreements to meet our growth and organisational cost needs

Goal 5 INSPIRE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND ADVOCACY Objectives Leverage our network of strategic partnerships to become advocates and share our message. Raise awareness and engage stakeholders on core issues. Participate in local and global initiatives or events related to our mission. Strategic Results By 2021: Our network of partners will have been mapped and approached purposefully for specific opportunities to spread our message. The Malaysian population to whom we target our education initiatives will have increased awareness about core issues. We will have participated in applicable local and/or global initiatives or events related to our mission
