Research Design Service support for NIHR i4i applications. Janine Bestall RDS Manager Leeds (RDS YH)
Research Design Service role To offer fit for purpose advice and support on research design and methodology to researchers making funding applications To increase the number and proportion of high quality applications for funding To provide consistent national coverage, with a focus on NIHR Programmes
We do more than design Identifying appropriate funding sources Contacting appropriate collaborators in research or industry Building an appropriate team Involving patients and carers Writing plain English summaries Identifying the resources required Grantsmanship getting the narrative right Signpost researchers to specialised support Regulatory issues Mock interviews elevator pitch
How can the RDS help? Cohort, casecontrol, RCT, ethnographic, interview Scope Study Design Appropriate funding stream Peer-reviewed journals Grey literature Registered trials database Literature Cost issues Recruitment Appropriate time scale? Feasibility Involvement of patients and public Research Proposal Meaningful & appropriate Research team Multidisciplinary team Ethical considerations Impact Consent Benefit to NHS and patients Mock interview feedback Interview
Building your i4i application Identifying unmet need from user perspective. Demand driven innovation. Identification and articulation of the need. Identification of known facts and information still to be captured Focus on the clinical problem to be solved How is the problem currently being addressed? Who does the problem affect and in what circumstances? Identifying and articulating the scale of the problem prevalence Is it a local or global problem potential route to commercialisation?
Planning your public involvement In an NIHR application, you will need to clearly describe: How members of the public have already been involved in the development of the grant application How you plan to involve people throughout the duration of the study, if funded You can also explain why public involvement is not relevant to your study
What do reviewers look for? Clear plain English summary. Specific examples of your responses to feedback & how the application was shaped as a result of PI. Clear PI plan throughout the research cycle. PI included in different sections of the application. Team expertise. Awareness of challenges and solutions. Support for those involved and appropriate budget.
RDS public involvement funds Up to 500 to fund public involvement activities in the development of grant applications: Funding for one off public involvement projects Set up funding for ongoing panels/networks/groups etc. These awards are a good development opportunity for more junior researchers. Information available on website
Research involving other partners HTCs/DECs can help with design, development and delivery of good quality research projects. To be replaced by MedTech and In-vitro diagnostic cooperatives (MICs) in AHSNs add value to applications by supporting the implementation of med tech into healthcare. Early discussions are strongly recommended for involving any of these organisations. Any sub-contracting needs to be clearly written into the application.
Working with the RDS Book an early appointment with the RDS Summary of research. Face to face meeting First point of contact with a generalist. Follow-up meetings with specialists e.g. Health Economist. Review of application
Initial meeting with the RDS Assessment Importance of the question Existing research Potential funding streams Study design is it a trial Clinical area Feasibility of recruitment strategy Track record of team PPI Costs; research, treatment, excess treatment
PICO(s) PICO can help you define your research question or bring together a search strategy for literature reviews: Patient/population who or what Intervention how Comparison what is the main alternative Outcome what are you trying to accomplish/measure/improve/ effect? Study what study design will you use to answer your question.
Interview preparation 1 Your presentation should: Provide a clear, concise understanding of the technology. Explain why funding is required and how it will be spent. Describe current competitive devices/techniques. Explain the USP of the technology. Describe the risk management during the project.
Interview preparation 2 Q&As should focus on: The relevance of the research to the NHS. The quality of the proposal. Strength of the research team. Evidence that a novel technology or intervention will be the ultimate output of the research and will deliver a benefit to patients. Strength of the management team and the commercialisation plan. A high degree of technological innovation. Strength of the health economic case.
