1 CALL FOR ABSTACTS ANNUAL CONFERENCE, 2016

2 PROFESSIONAL PLANNERS INSTITUTE is holding its annual The conference on September 19 to 21, 2016 at the Living Sky Centre in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. The Conference Committee would like to invite proposals for presentations. The theme of this year s conference is HOMEGROWN, which will focus on showcasing Saskatchewan s contribution to planning, highlighting our grass roots initiatives, and celebrating our Prairie Pride. You can expect this year s conference to be filled with local content, with an emphasis on planning initiatives, strategies, arts and culture. The event will provide an opportunity for everyone to showcase what HOMEGROWN means to them and their community. We encourage you to submit session proposals that discuss and examine the many factors that contribute to the importance of local community strategies, as well as showcase new and innovative local solutions to issues or programs that have been developed by the community for the community. This is an excellent opportunity to engage and share information with fellow planners, colleagues in related fields, academics and students. 1

3 Potential conference topics include, but are not limited to: Saskatchewan s Contribution to Planning (Made In Sask Solutions) Prairie Pride Initiatives Championed by the Community Winter Cities First Nations Planning Agriculture & Economic Development Plans by the Community for the Community Rural Community Strategies Local Arts and Culture 2

4 HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR PROPOSAL Abstract submissions must outline the following information: 1. Title of the presentation, which clearly indicates the topic. 2. Name(s) of presenter(s), job title, academic background, institutional or corporate affiliation and contact information, including address and telephone number 3. Presenters previous speaking experience, including relevant speaking engagements. 4. Proposed presentation format. 5. Clear and concise description or abstract of the session, no more than 300 words in length. 6. Specialized equipment requirements. The conference program will include a mix of plenary and concurrent sessions that are designed to appeal to a variety of learning styles. Sessions may include: panel discussions, workshops, mobile tours and workshops, and training sessions. Please note, the Conference Committee encourages innovative approaches to presentations. All proposals must be submitted to the Executive Director, Marilyn Steranka, by at info@sppi.ca. The submission deadline is July 8,

5 PRESENTATION FORMATS Proposal format options could fit one of the following presentation formats: SHORT PRESENTATION LONG PRESENTATION TRAINING WORKSHOPS MOBILE TOURS & WORKSHOPS 30 minutes in length, including 5 to 10 minutes for any questions and discussion (1-2 speakers). 1 to 2 hours in length, including 20 minutes for any questions and discussion (1-3 speakers). May include interactive presentations, panel discussions and workshops conducted within the conference venue. 2 or more hours in length on a particular topic (1-2 speakers). 2 or more hours in length (1-2 leaders). May be walking workshops or involve transportation to local venues and attractions. Do you have a creative approach to presenting your topic? Please describe in your submission. 4

6 SELECTION CRITERIA & REVIEW PROCESS The Conference Committee, composed of volunteers from practice and academia, will review all proposals and selection will be based on the following criteria: The relevance of the topic to planning and to the conference theme(s). The presenter s expertise, knowledge and ability to engage and challenge delegates. The consistency of the submission with the minimum information and format requirements listed on page 3. The proposed session s fit within the conference structure. The Conference Committee may determine that a proposal could or should be presented in a format other than that proposed by the submitter. The submitter will be consulted regarding this option. The Conference Committee will notify those who have submitted proposals of its decision by by July 22,

7 PRESENTERS RESPONSIBILITIES Each presenter or group of presenters: 1. Must have their presentation, a summary of their presentation (no more than 300 words), a brief biography (no more than 300 words) and a photo submitted to info@sppi.ca by August 12, Must indicate intent to attend and register for the conference. 3. Will be responsible for all expenses, including travel, accommodation, conference registration, non-sponsored meals and miscellaneous charges.
