2 BACKGROUND Traceability is the ability to trace products and their associated attributes backwards and forwards through the agri-food chain. A complete and effective traceability system requires the collection, storage and sharing of three key pieces of information: 3 PILLARS OF TRACEABILITY: Premises ID Animal/Product ID Movement Recording Register all parcels of land associated with agri-food activity Identify all animals and agrifood products individually or by batch Record and track all movements of animals and agrifood products Effective and Efficient Traceability 2

3 PROVINCIAL PREMISES REGISTRY (PPR) Available to all agri-food business owners and operators in order to register their premises and receive a unique Premises Identification Number (Premises ID) and certificate An Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) initiative Registration is voluntary and is no cost to registrant It is only official registry for obtaining an Ontario Premises ID Number for agri-food businesses Service is available in English and French Angus GeoSolutions Inc (AGSI): Approved as service provider to operate the Provincial Premises Registry on behalf of OMAF/MRA (April 2012) Registrations: by phone MY PPR ID ( ) or online at 3

10 TRACEABILITY OPPORTUNITIES: FUNDING PROGRAMS LOCAL FOOD FUND (LFF) Fund that provides up to $10 million per year for three years Submit applications at any time; intake periods for review Applicants can apply to one of the four LFF project categories: Regional and Local Food Networks Enhanced Technology, Capacity or Minor Capital Research and Best Practices Education, Marketing & Outreach 10

11 LOCAL FOOD FUND: INTRODUCTION (CONT D) Local Food Definition For the purpose of the LFF, local means: a) food produced or harvested in Ontario, and b) food and beverages made in Ontario if they include one or more ingredients produced or harvested in Ontario. In-kind Costs No in-kind contribution eligible for reimbursement, however it can be used to demonstrate commitment for a project Reimbursement Levels Generally up to 50 per cent provincial investment Reimbursement of invoices submitted Caps No cap on the amount of funding per approved eligible project under the LFF 11

12 Application In-Take Periods LOCAL FOOD FUND: APPLICATION INTAKE PERIODS Complete applications received during the in-take periods listed below will be assessed and presented to the Rural Economic Development Advisory Panel as a group. 13 TRACEABILITY OPPORTUNITIES: FUNDING PROGRAMS TRACEABILITY FOUNDATIONS INITIATIVE (TFI) TFI OVERVIEW TFI is a federal-provincial cost-shared initiative under the Agri-Flexibility Fund. Developed to support industry led traceability/information sharing systems from farm to fork (whole chain). 35 approved projects: 19 Value Chain and 16 Sector projects. All projects were completed by December Funding per project ranges from $25K to over $1M. 13

14 TRACEABILITY FOUNDATIONS INITIATIVE VALUE CHAINS RESULTS REPORTED TO DATE comes Competitive Advantage: increased sales Market access: gained access to new markets/ retention of existing markets Operational efficiencies: improved productivity and/ or decreased operating costs Examples: better inventory management, better quality control, more effective use of labour, better access to info for better decision making, costs savings (i.e. insurance premiums, operational costs) Emergency Management: improved ability to complete a mock traceability exercise 14
