The Grantee * has a goal or goals they want to accomplish; * has personal/organizational capacity to do the work; * needs resources; * make bids for available resources. The Grantor * has the same or similar goal or goals; * does not have the personal/organizational capacity to do the work needed; * has resources; * put their resources out to bid. The Process Grantor puts out an RFP, detailing what they want to accomplish and what they are willing to give resources to support. Grantee reviews the RFP and gathers information to determine how closely their goals match, and whether they/their organization has the capacity to do the work. Grantee prepares and submits a proposal to the grantor, making the case for why the grantor should give some of their resources in support. Grantor reviews the proposal and decides to allocate resources or not.

Some Basic Strategies No one likes to be the only one in the pool - demonstrate support

Finding Grant Opportunities Do Your Homework!
Finding Grant Opportunities Start Local: Who do we know that does charitable giving in town? Businesses? Family & Other Foundations?
Finding Grant Opportunities On-Line: Searchable databases. Usually need a membership, but may be available and open to the public in other locations libraries & schools, maybe others. Foundation Directory On-line GrantStation NH Center for Non-profits
Finding Grant Opportunities On-Line: Websites and web searches For businesses - Look under community support or social responsibility.
Finding Grant Opportunities Other Sources: Annual Reports Playbills or Event Programs Newspapers
General Proposal Basics a. Be Clear no jargon; spell things out: New Hampshire Catholic Charities (NHCC) improve opportunities to increase personal revenue = help them get a job b. Be very specific about what you want from them $XX to support hunger relief vs. $XX to purchase and distribute food c. Be concise word and character limits will force this on you d. Keep things in the order they are asked or outlined in the RFP May even consider leaving their headings/questions in place e. Easy to read i. More, smaller paragraphs ii. Spacing and alignment on page iii. Font size and formatting f. Answer their questions, not more g. Avoid the Dept. of Redundancy Dept. doesn t mean don t repeat key points, but do differently and in response to different perspective questions
General Proposal Format a. Introduction/Summary & request up front; b. Org. mission/history/background; maybe some program info c. The Need & how do you know? = DATA! d. The Solution the program you are proposing i. Goals (Outcomes) and Objectives (Outputs) ii. What we intend to do (Activities) iii. Resources may be part of activities, but also specified in budget e. Evaluation How will you know you re successful? i. What will you measure and how will you measure it? ii. Other types of Evaluation 1. Context & Implementation How will you know WHY you were successful? f. Sustainability Once our $$ is gone, how will this keep going? g. Budget i. Total cost of program ii. Total amount requested from us iii. What specifically will our $$ be used to pay for?
