They also offered supporters giving personal pages where donors could share information with their friends and social media followers, which was supported by guides, including screenshots, telling their champions how to make the post of those personalized fundraising pages. In advance of Giving Tuesday, they recruited groups to help them pack the deliverable packages of food on Giving Tuesday. Funds2Orgs.com 4

Chapter One Giving Tuesday Ideas and Inspiration Groups signed up, and on Giving Tuesday, the teams got started competing against each other to see which group could pack the most amount of food packages in only 45 minutes. The winner was a community group that had named themselves the Harrison Hurricanes. Together, that team alone packaged 2,548 pounds of apples. In total 19,980 fruit packages were put together and distributed to seniors after the Giving Tuesday event through the organization s Senior Grocery Program. Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County The organization wanted to take advantage of Giving Tuesday and raise as much money as possible for their programs. They created a fundraising event that challenged their supporters to donate to the organization to demonstrate their commitment to the Jewish community and also asked them to help the Jewish Federation spread the word. The challenge put forth by the Jewish Federation was heard and accepted. Hundreds of supporters of the organization donated, and also spread the word about the work of the group. By the end of Giving Tuesday, the nonprofit was able to raise $3 million in a single day, shattering their earlier record of $1.6 million. The following are just a few ideas to help you get started. Funds2Orgs.com 5

Chapter One Giving Tuesday Ideas and Inspiration 1. Join the Giving Tuesday movement and get yourself listed as a designated nonprofit, church, school or charity by going to the page to Join the Movement. 2. Create a great story and build a campaign around it. In Chapter 4, we ll give you our thoughts on how you can create a brilliant story in one paragraph! 3. Curate great photographic images and videos from the work you do that will capture your story and encourage your supporters to share, like and comment! Always use compelling images and video to accompany concise copy on posts and tweets. 4. Make it a point to use the #GivingTuesday, but if you want to get started a day earlier, use the hashtag #GivingMonday, which many organizations use to get a bit of a head start. 5. Ask your supporters to take an #UNselfie of them making a contribution or doing something special in support of your cause, post it on social media and tag you. 6. Get on Facebook Live and spend the day making live, engaging videos that will be watched and shared by your donors to support the cause. Tell your story concisely and well, and give your audience a behind-the-scenes look for greater traction on social media! 7. 8 Chapter Two Get Your Community & Civic Leaders Involved! Giving Tuesday can be a big deal for your organization or group, but not only because of the money you can raise that day and through the holiday season, but also because of the new donors you can gain. Think of Giving Tuesday as an excellent opportunity to raise the awareness for your brand in the community, which will inevitably bring new supporters to your organization. While thinking about obtaining large amounts of funding from major donors, foundations or corporations is great, every penny counts. Many top donors started out by giving just a tiny portion of funds, which they do to see how an organization engages with them. In other words, you want big and also smaller gifts on Giving Tuesday. Regardless of whether of whomever you re targeting, one of the most vital elements for supporters, especially new ones who are not familiar with your group is the impact you re making in the community. If donors have only so much money to give but want to support the philanthropic community, then nonprofits that demonstrate impact are the ones that will gain more from supporters, including fundraising dollars. As Fidelity reported, nearly 65 percent of donors would increase their charitable giving if they understood the impact their gifts made. Keep this mind as you look to get new people from your community on board during Giving Tuesday. 7 Brilliant Tips on How to Maximize Community Involvement Giving Tuesday is an excellent time to see about partnering with other groups so that both organizations can expand their sphere of influence in the community. Also, all levels of donors like it when they see partnerships that help extend the expertise of nonprofits and also affect the lives of more people. There are several ways your organization can gain more traction within the community to help amplify the work you do. Funds2Orgs.com 8

Chapter Two Get Your Community & Civic Leaders Involved! 1. Shoe Drive Fundraiser Want to know what one of the easiest ways to raise money for your cause is that doesn t involve asking for money? It s a shoe drive fundraiser. On Giving Tuesday, you will likely ask your supporters for funds, but what if you could also provide them with an additional revenue stream that is not going to cost them a penny? All they have to do is collect gently worn, used and new shoes and give them to you. That s another way your community and supporters can get involved for you on Giving Tuesday. A shoe drive fundraiser is an excellent complementary activity to practically any fundraiser you will be doing that day. 2. Alliances The best nonprofits are excellent at what they do, and they specialize in their market. In other words, they re not all things to all people. However, there are ways your nonprofit can partner with other charities and groups for Giving Tuesday to broaden the reach of both organizations within your community. As an example, if you happen to lead a youth development group, you can partner with a local school in need of after-school services. You can then present for Giving Tuesday a united front in a program that is mutually beneficial to both organizations. 3. Shout Outs We ll give you some excellent information for making sure that you can tap into corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs in the next chapter. But, a great bit of outreach your institutional funders can provide you on Giving Tuesday is for them to get the word out to their followers and supporters in the community about their support of your organization. Ask your institutional funders (e.g., corporations, businesses, and foundations) that champion one of your organization to give you a shout out on their social media platforms on Giving Tuesday. 4. Social Media By now, you know that any marketing effort has to include digital, and social media in particular. Social networking allows your organization to promote your cause in a low-cost or free manner. Something to remember is that the primary driver for Giving Tuesday, aside from giving to charity, is to encourage people to support an organization and promote it across all digital and social media. So, ask your followers to share your content. Don t be shy about it because even if people can t donate, if they are interested or passionate about the work you do, they will happily share your story to others in their network especially on Giving Tuesday. Funds2Orgs.com 9

Chapter Two Get Your Community & Civic Leaders Involved! 5. Mobilize Through Crowdfunding Crowdfunding is a great way to get beyond your immediate database of supporters, and there s no better time to begin than on Giving Tuesday. As always, you start with the closest people to you, and then move out from that point. Your supporters will help you build momentum and create a winning fundraiser. Once others who are not close to you are aware that you are 40 or 50 percent to goal, it s much easier for them to get motivated to give to your organization. You ll want to begin a crowdfunding campaign leading up to Giving Tuesday or kick it off on Giving Tuesday and conclude it at some point during the holiday season. 6. Matching Gifts An easy way to get additional money within your community is to promote matching gifts. Each year millions upon millions of dollars are left at the corporate table, so to speak, because employees are not aware that their company can make a matching contribution to whatever an employee donates to a recognized charitable organization. If you let your champions know they can double or even triple their gift to you on Giving Tuesday, they will apply for a matching gift grant at their company. Always promote matching gifts because it really is easy money! 7. Sell Products A great way to spread the word in your community, and create another revenue stream is to sell products, such as t-shirts, bracelets, or baseball caps. Place your logo on it and tell your supporters to purchase the products to help spread the word about your organization in the community. For Giving Tuesday, ask your donors to take an #UNselfie wearing your t-shirts or baseball caps for a subtle way to spread your brand message across social media! One of the best aspects about Giving Tuesday is that it s about fun and creativity. The most successful organization figure out creative ways to get different audiences involved in what they want to achieve, which is to raise more money and awareness to support their programs. There are many other ideas about getting people involved in your community, including through strategic alliances, so an excellent way to begin is by getting your team together to brainstorm great ideas. A Word About Your Local Civic Leaders When you want to raise visibility, an excellent resource is your local politicians, community and civic leaders. Although politicians won t likely donate to your organization, they are interested in helping their constituents because when they do it, it helps get votes when election time rolls around. Also, your local civic groups, such as the Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus or other Chamber of Commerce, are all excellent sources of support to help you take action for Giving Tuesday. Funds2Orgs.com 10

Chapter Two Get Your Community & Civic Leaders Involved! 3 Excellent Ways to Get Civic Leaders Involved We work with civic groups each day, and we love helping them understand how to reach out to political and civic leaders. Getting a Proclamation from the Mayor s Office. Proclamations are an excellent way for a city to recognize an important event or achievement of members of the town. By requesting a proclamation from your mayor s office, you set your organization up as a nonprofit or charitable leader. Ask your mayor to proclaim Giving Tuesday an essential day of giving in your community, which will benefit your organization as the leader spearheading the effort, if it is approved. By leading the drive to proclaim a day of giving within your community, you will position yourself as a civic group of importance, and you will raise awareness about philanthropy in general and the work you do. For an excellent guide for how to obtain a mayoral proclamation, visit the Giving Tuesday website. Reach Out to Your Local Rotary, Chamber of Commerce or Knights of Columbus Group. Civic organizations are always looking for an opportunity to do some good during the holiday season. A great way to get your community involved in helping you during Giving Tuesday is to ask them to support your cause. Even if they are assisting another group, figure out a different way they can support your cause if it turns out they are already committed. For instance, if they are raising money for another charity that is not yours, ask them to help you with a shoe drive fundraiser during Giving Tuesday and the holiday season, which will not impact the money requests because they will ask only for gently worn, used and new shoes. Let them know that it s a great way to raise visibility in the community because they are helping you raise money, supporting the work efforts of micro-entrepreneurs in developing nations, and also repurposing shoes in a socially responsible fundraiser. The shoe drive fundraising company will issue your organization a check. Connect With Local Businesses. Finally, an excellent way to help you raise money is to reach out to as many local businesses as possible, particularly the larger franchises and your current donors. Owners of these businesses will want to market their brand, and if you can create a different, new and exciting way for them to promote their local businesses, they will want to partner with you. The requests for their support can span from asking them to mention you on social media on Giving Tuesday to giving a percentage of their profits. You can also ask them to be a collection location for anything your organization could use from the public, such as supplies, or by having a donation box or shoe collection box if you are doing a shoe drive fundraiser. Ask your community for support, and they will respond, especially on Giving Tuesday! Funds2Orgs.com 11

Chapter Three Get Corporate CSR Dollars on Giving Tuesday Funds2Orgs.com

Chapter Three Get Corporate CSR Dollars on Giving Tuesday Because consumers are willing to pay more for corporations that are meaningfully engaged in corporate social responsibility (CSR) work, the leading national and global companies are responding to the call for action. CSR is an excellent opportunity for your nonprofit, especially around Giving Tuesday. When you demonstrate to the community that your organization is receiving corporate support on Giving Tuesday, your nonprofit will get the benefit of being associated with a respected corporate brand. How to Promote CSR on Giving Tuesday 1. Social Media Talk with your corporate partners and supporters in advance of Giving Tuesday and ask them to help you amplify your message. Corporations are very involved in promoting the causes they support on the global day of giving, and if they understand that you also need their megaphone, they will help you. Ask them to tag your organization when they use the #GivingTuesday and #UNselfie hashtags. 2. Workplace Giving Campaign During Giving Tuesday, and throughout the year, many companies have workplace giving campaigns. Ask local corporate supporters and prospects in your community about their workplace giving programs. Also, see if the companies in your area are doing anything special with their employees around workplace giving. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for corporations to demonstrate to the public through the media that they are good corporate citizens and many sponsor special events and activities. 3. Donate Your Commissions or A Portion of Your Sales If you happen to live in a community where there is a strong brokerage or financial community, many, if not most, will be giving be donating a portion of their commissions made on Giving Tuesday to nonprofits or making some other sort of contribution to charity. If your organization happens to have someone who is on your board or a donor who is in the financial industry, have a conversation with them and see if your group can be one of those supported on this particular day of philanthropy. It will not only bring you money, but it will also provide you press because companies promote it in the media. Funds2Orgs.com 13

Chapter Three Get Corporate CSR Dollars on Giving Tuesday 4. Matching Gifts As we ve explained earlier, matching gifts are an excellent source of fundraising dollars, which are often overlooked. Giving Tuesday is an excellent time to get the word out to all of your supporters who work in companies or larger corporations that their gift to you can be matched by twice or even three times. Create a special matching gift outreach on social media, and through direct response asking your current donors who work for corporations to visit their human resources offices so they can complete matching gift forms to double and even triple their gift. 5. Volunteer Day of Service If you have even a few corporate donors and supporters or volunteers, Giving Tuesday is an excellent day to see if they would provide you volunteer time as a day of service. Many corporations, especially those with robust CSR programs will encourage their teams to go out into the community on this day. Remember, this is an opportunity for them to demonstrate that they are good corporate citizens in your town. Also, volunteers taking the day at your organization to help you is an excellent opportunity for you and your volunteers to post on social media because it s philanthropy in action. Offering Value to Company CSR Programs Giving Tuesday has, at its core, giving to charity and also leveraging digital platforms to promote it. Most of what happens on Giving Tuesday, especially around marketing and promotion is meant to take place online so the world literally can see what it means to make a social impact and therefore get inspired. Companies want to get the word out there about their CSR efforts; therefore, when you ask them to help you, you have to consider also how you will be promoting them. Funds2Orgs.com 14

Chapter Three Get Corporate CSR Dollars on Giving Tuesday 1. Promote Corporate Giving In any request that you make of a corporation, make it a point to tell the company that you will seek to promote their CSR in the community through your supporters and the broader community using the media. When you inform companies that you will be helping them expand their CSR efforts, they will be more inclined to help you. Some examples of promotions you can do are to list all corporations that support you with in-kind, contributions, volunteers and matching gifts on your website and then make sure you drive traffic to the page through social media on Giving Tuesday. Spend Giving Tuesday thinking about creative ways to thank corporate partners, and if you do, don t be surprised if you get corporate marketing teams that day responding in kind with posts and tweets where your organization is tagged. 2. Team Events and Crowdfunding One of the critical elements that corporations are always looking to promote is teamwork. On Giving Tuesday, they want opportunities for their teams to collaborate and work together. As you saw in one of the stories in the first chapter about the Food Bank for Westchester, they had teams get together to compete against each other for charity. Companies are competitive by nature, and this is an excellent opportunity to have some good-natured fun for a good cause to use Giving Tuesday as a way for companies to compete against each other for charity. A few ideas for you to consider is to have companies sponsor crowdfunding campaigns for your organization or to have a competitive event that will somehow benefit those you serve. Don t forget to make sure to promote the team events or crowd fundraisers on social media and with the news media. Quick Tips for Working with CSR Programs Remember that Giving Tuesday is about promoting, aside from receiving donations and support. You ll want to have a robust marketing effort that day, in particular, if you partner with corporate partners. Ask them to partner with you; here are a few quick tips to follow on this important day as you work with them. Giving Tuesday Team If you have donors and volunteers who work in large businesses, ask them to help you on Giving Tuesday and make them a part of a team. Ask those with marketing expertise to help you promote your CSR partnership. You can ask other business professionals to spearhead efforts to coordinate any team events on that day or to help you get the word out to their audiences about what their friends and followers can do on this important day. Remember, when friends Funds2Orgs.com 15

Chapter Four Hit It Out of the Park Promoting on Giving Tuesday ask other friends to support a cause they believe in, you are more than likely to get a gift than if you approached the same prospect cold. Black Friday and Cyber Monday When you partner with corporate partners, especially if they are retailers, figure out creative ways to tie your Giving Tuesday efforts to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which are the biggest holiday shopping days of the year. Not only will your nonprofit benefit from three (as opposed to just one) calendar days in the proximity of each other, but it may help your organization and corporate partners to leverage these days for mutual benefit. For instance, send s to your supporters and post on social media about the companies that are doing something special for you on Giving Tuesday. Ask your followers to patronize those businesses, especially if they are retailers in need of foot traffic on Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Amplification of Your Message As we ve mentioned, Giving Tuesday relies heavily on digital, so that messaging is amplified. Make sure when you re promoting Giving Tuesday on social media and digital to use the hashtags #GivingTuesday and #UNselfie. Remember to ask your supporters to do the same. Tweet and tag companies on posts by using so that they can thank you and message you back. When this happens, all of their followers are being exposed to your brand and its message. Use crowd amplification platforms such as Thunderclap on Giving Tuesday to help your posts and tweets reach a broader audience and inform your CSR partners that you will be using these strategies, so they understand that you ve got a plan about promoting your partnership to the public. Corporate partners are always excellent partners because they have the resources to invest and understand the need to promote in the community. Work with them on Giving Tuesday, and you will notice a spike concerning the number of people who will donate or become aware of your brand. And that now leads us to how to tell your story and promote on Giving Tuesday in the next chapter. You ll want to make sure you have things together there. Funds2Orgs.com 16

Chapter Four Hit It Out of the Park Promoting on Giving Tuesday Giving Tuesday is about giving to charity and promoting it digitally. You might not know this, but the idea for Giving Tuesday began with the 92 nd Street Y in New York City and Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in And within five years, the day became a global phenomenon with hundreds of millions raised for charity, over a million mentions and over 21.7 billion impressions on Twitter, as we noted in the first chapter. All of this was done because of a carefully executed digital and social media effort. You can do this too! We have a resource that we offer to our shoe drive fundraising partners that helps them tell their story, in one paragraph. In today s digital world, you have to be able to deliver your story quickly and concisely. We want you to be successful as well on Giving Tuesday, so this is how to tell your story in brief. How to Easily Tell Your Story in a Single Paragraph 1. Main idea: The first sentence is the foundation of your message. It is written to engage the reader. 2. Context: The second sentence helps the reader understand facts or circumstances in support of your main idea. 3. Challenge: To set up the ask, you have to state the conflict or problem, which helps people understand the challenges of your mission or work. 4. Case statement or need: In this part of your paragraph, you want to state what the need (or case) is; in other words, why do you need people to donate gently worn, used and new shoes? 5. The ask: This sentence answers for your readers what you want and need from them, which is to support your shoe drive fundraiser. Sample Story Every day, we work with hundreds of rescued dogs that have nowhere to go where it not for ABC Rescue. Good Samaritans or veterans from our partner organization who have made it their mission to rescue dogs save animals from dangerous and neglectful situations. ABC Rescue is a purely volunteer-driven organization, which means we have limited resources to do the work we do. When the dogs arrive at our volunteer homes, most have suffered and are in need of immediate medical care, and although our vets work at negotiated rates, some of our dogs require extensive medical care. Additional expenses include food, toys, and grooming. You can help us by collecting one bag of 25 pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes in our shoe drive fundraiser and Funds2Orgs will issue us a check based on the overall weight of all the shoes collected.
