2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission PENCIL's mission is linking community resources to Nashville Public Schools to help young people achieve academic success and prepare for life. At PENCIL, we are committed to enriching student success through active and robust community partnerships, most notably as PENCIL Partners and PENCIL Academy Partners. We work to determine the needs of the students at each school, and then we provide customized Partner opportunities for businesses and other organizations to share their skills with those students to help them achieve success in school and life. Background With our extensive network of PENCIL Partners, PENCIL is proud to be Nashville's only organization with such a comprehensive approach to linking schools to community resources. Partnerships are the heartbeat of PENCIL, and connecting schools with businesses and community organizations has been our passion since we began serving Nashville in PENCIL has grown from the original 37 PENCIL Partnerships to more than 500 today, one of the largest examples of school-community involvement in the country. Early in the process, we realized that these Partnerships could do more than just help individual schools so we developed a coordinated approach that aligns Partners and schools with district leadership goals. Each program includes best educational practices that are grounded in the needs of students. For example, community members can volunteer as tutors in our Reading Partners programs to improve elementary students' proficiency in literacy. There is also an opportunity for involvement on a larger scale, such as a corporation working with multiple high schools to guide our city's next generation of professionals in a variety of industry areas. These Partners foster a love of learning as they help students earn college credits and industry-specific certifications before they even graduate. Impact With the help of more than 500 Partnerships now connected to schools, PENCIL directs essential programs that our educators say are vital for students. Volunteer tutors are helping students improve in reading. Teachers are getting free school supplies and books for their students. And Nashville's high school students are getting realworld experience and tutoring on industry certification exams in one of many MNPS Academies thanks to robust Academy PENCIL Partnerships. Some of the successes from the academic year include: ** 54,000+ volunteer hours ** 2,129 teachers shopped at LP PENCIL Box ** $4.1 million in community investment This year, PENCIL's goals include forging successful school-community partnerships, expanding our free school supply program and increasing student achievement, especially in elementary reading. Needs All of PENCIL's needs are directly related to the needs of students in Metro Nashville Public Schools. With about half of students performing below grade level in reading, we are always eager to recruit more volunteer tutors as Reading Partners. Because 75% of students face economic challenges, we greatly appreciate volunteers and donations to our school supply store where teachers shop for FREE materials like pencils, paper, crayons, calculators, notebooks and backpacks. We always invite more Nashville businesses, organizations, and faith communities to provide resources as a Partner with an individual school and with 18% of students failing to graduate we are especially excited to have them work with a high school as an Academy PENCIL Partner. In short, we need the Nashville community to join us as we work together to support our children. Board Chair Statement As Chairman of the Board of Directors for the PENCIL, I believe we are doing great things for public education in Nashville. Because of PENCIL's Reading Partners, more students are reading on grade level. High school students are more engaged in the classroom and local businesses are seeing more students ready to work in their fields because of robust Academy PENCIL Partners. More students are getting the materials they need to be successful because their teachers are able to shop at the LP PENCIL Box for free school supplies. Great things are happening at PENCIL and great things are happening in Metro schools! As Partners, volunteers and donors, we are making great strides in the educational landscape of Nashville. Thank you. CEO Statement I have a very strong passion for and commitment to the students of Metro Nashville Public Schools - from my middle school daughter, to my Reading Partner student, to the incredibly poised high school students who serve as ambassadors across the district. Our students are incredibly diverse, eager and capable. PENCIL's role is to tell their compelling stories to the community so that we can recruit more of the community every day to engage with these students in a host of ways to positively impact their academic performance and their success in life. As MNPS continues to focus on increasing literacy skills at all grade levels, so does PENCIL. Certainly it is easy to understand that if you work with a student to increase their literacy skills regardless of their current grade level that you are creating more opportunities for them to be successful in their life. Beyond literacy work PENCIL engages volunteers to bring curriculum and career options to life for students, which often opens their eyes to worlds they never imagined and builds relationships which actually make those students' dreams real possibilities. 4 Programs Programs PENCIL Partners Description PENCIL Partners and PENCIL Academy Partners are businesses and organizations committed to student success through organized, coordinated activities that match the unique attributes of each Partner with the specific needs of each school or academy. Schools turn to us and our wide network of business contacts to help them find Partners that are a good match for their school. Businesses and organizations turn to us and our comprehensive knowledge of Nashville schools when they want to connect with a school where they can help students. PENCIL also serves as the coordinator of these ongoing Partnership relationships. We facilitate communication, provide activity ideas, advise on volunteer management, and help the school and Partner develop a year-long strategic plan. Budget Population Served K-12 (5-19 years),, Reading Partners Description PENCIL Reading Partners exemplify the power of committed volunteers to meet a critical need when too many children are not meeting grade level benchmarks in reading. PENCIL works with MNPS to identify struggling students, and then we screen and place volunteers into MNPS schools where they work with each student regularly through individualized tutoring. Research shows that as little as 30 minutes per week for eight weeks improves a student's performance, behavior and self-esteem and often improves proficiency an average of 4 reading levels. Budget Category Education, General/Other Literacy Population Served Children Only (5-14 years),, LP PENCIL Box Description LP PENCIL Box makes sure students have the school supplies necessary for success in the classroom and that teachers don't have to spend their own money to buy those supplies. Through generous donations from PENCIL Partners and the Kids In Need Foundation, the Box is stocked with school supplies such as pencils, pens, notebooks, crayons, scissors, reading books, backpacks and much more. Every Metro teacher can make two shopping trips per school year and leaves each time with more than $250 in supplies. 5 Family Resource Centers Description Family Resource Centers (FRCs) act as a hub for community resources, helping families navigate outside agencies that can assist with social, emotional and physical needs. 9 Management Executive Director/CEO Executive Director Ms. Angie Adams Term Start Jan Experience Angie Adams is PENCIL's enthusiastic CEO. Angie's extensive experience as a nonprofit leader in Nashville positions her to build on PENCIL's successes while forging a new leadership path for the community to galvanize behind Nashville's school system. And as an MNPS parent, it is personal! Formerly the Executive Director for the Nashville Ballet, Angie led one of Nashville' premiere arts organizations with an annual budget of more than $4.4 million. Her wealth of knowledge for program and financial management as well as her extensive experience in development and fundraising has lead PENCIL to increased giving, increased community engagement and increased community investment from PENCIL and it's Partners into MNPS. Angie has a Bachelor of Business Administration from Belmont University.
