Based on the votes cast, the amendments are hereby adopted, effective immediately. PROPOSAL No. 1: Change the term length of the appointed Executive Board Members to provide more continuity as committee liaisons and so that only one member rotates off the Executive Board each year and so that each incoming SON President appoints only one new member. Option Number of Votes For The Amendment 75 Against The Amendment 2 Total Votes 77 PROPOSAL No. 2: Instead of naming the standing subject matter committees in the Constitution, specify the committees only in the Manual of Operations. The SON Education Committee wants them! If you would like to share slides or pictures that can be used for teaching nematology, please submit them to nemateach@byu.edu. The SON Education Committee will make them freely available through the SON web site to improve nematology teaching. Submit as many slides as possible! Whoever submits the best slides before the 2013 SON Annual Meeting in Knoxville wins a YETI cooler (generously sponsored by Syngenta)! Grewal Move LSU Students Doing Well!! Parwinder Grewal has accepted the position of Professor and Head of Entomology and Plant Pathology Department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He will be relocating from the Ohio State University in May, Parwinder is a Fellow and Past President of SON. As the host of the 2013 SON meeting, Parwinder is looking forward to seeing all members from July 14-17, 2013 for an exciting meeting in Knoxville, the home of the Smoky Mountains. Kularathna won second place at the Beltwide Cotton Conference for his presentation entitled Influence of soil nutrients on reproduction and pathogenicity of Rotylenchulus reniformis on cotton. Addison Plaisance won the 2013 Mary Grodner Scholarship from the Louisiana Vegetation Management Association for his research on turf-associated nematodes. Deborah M. Xavier won second place in the Rodrigo Rodríguez-Kábana student poster competition at the 44 th Organization of Nematologists of Tropical America meeting. She also won third place for her presentation Influence of soil texture on reproduction and pathogenicity of Rotylenchulus reniformis on cotton at the Beltwide Cotton Conference. PS: Overstreet, Pontif and McGawley are also well, getting older and smiling at the accomplishments of students who make them look good! Due to logistics and cost considerations, the SON Board has approved to change the venue of the 2013 meeting from Cleveland to Knoxville, Tennessee. Knoxville is a wonderful city to host the meeting and all arrangements have been made with Hilton Knoxville. More details are posted on the web 3

SYNGENTA VALENT BIOSCIENCES CORP. Call for Award Nominations for 2013 The SON recognizes individuals for scientific excellence and contributions to the science of nematology through several awards. A member of the society may nominate one candidate per year for each award. It is important that nominations provide a critical analysis of the nominee's contributions. The Honors and Awards Committee encourages members of the Society to actively seek candidates with outstanding records and nominate them for an appropriate award for the year of One or more candidates are chosen for each award. Honorary Member Award is the highest honor bestowed by the Society. It is awarded for meritorious and superlative contributions to the science of nematology. The number of living persons in this category should not exceed 2% of the regular and emeritus membership and the award is limited to one person per year. Fellow of the Society is granted by the Society to a member in recognition of distinguished contributions to the science of nematology. No more than 0.4% of the living membership may be elected Fellow in any given year. This honor is bestowed upon a member who has excelled in areas of significant research, teaching, extension, administration, or through contributions in service to the Society of Nematologists or the science of nematology above and beyond that of most of its members. The Syngenta Crop Protection Award is presented by Syngenta, Greensboro, NC, to a person who has made contributions in nematology, not previously recognized, which has led to significant advancement in agriculture. The contributions should have been made within the last 5 years and the nominee should be within 15 years of receiving a Ph.D. degree at the time of the award. Teaching Excellence Award recognizes a SON member for excellence in teaching nematology. The nominee must have excelled in classroom teaching of a nematology course or through developing innovative nematology teaching materials for use in a classroom-setting (K-12, undergraduate or graduate level). NOMINATION INSTRUCTIONS: The nomination packet must be submitted by May 31, Any member of the Society may submit nominations and the nomination process is performed in confidence. Each nomination packet should include the following: 1. Statement. This should include the nominee's name, educational background, current and previous positions, and contributions to nematology and agriculture in the scope of the particular award. The statement must also explain and document the significance of these contributions. Each statement must be double-spaced and no more than 4 pages long. 2. List of publications. A listing of publications separated into the following categories: a) peer-reviewed journal publications, b) book chapters or reviews, and c) other publications such as bulletins, laboratory manuals, extension publications, etc. The publication list must be single-spaced. 3. Letters of endorsement. Besides a cover letter, each nomination should also include two letters of endorsement. The letters should be addressed to Judy Thies, Chair of the Honors and Awards Committee. Electronic submissions are preferred. Send Word, WordPerfect, or PDF documents to Judy Thies at judy.thies@ars.usda.gov. Dow AgroSciences has provided the Society of Nematologists with funds to support graduate student travel to attend the Society of Nematologists meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee. Five awards of $500 (USD) each will be given to students presenting papers (oral or poster presentations) at the 2013 Society of Nematologists meeting. The Travel Award Application and guidelines for abstracts will soon be available on the Society of Nematologists web site Submit cover letter, abstract, and awards application via to Dr. Judy Thies at judy.thies@ars.usda.gov All submissions must be received by May 1, The Honors and Awards Committee will evaluate the requests. Award announcements will be made by June 1, Nathan A. Cobb Travel Awards The Nathan A. Cobb Foundation is pleased to request applications for graduate student travel awards to attend the Society of Nematologists meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee. Awards categories include: General Fund, Entomophilic Nematology Endowment, and William F. Mai Endowment. The Cobb Travel Award Application, details of award categories and guidelines for abstracts will soon be available on the Society of Nematologists web site The deadline for receipt of Cobb Travel Award applications is May 1, 2013! Award announcements will be made by June 1, Takeuchi to Spend Four Months at LSU Dr. Yuko Takeuchi, Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Terrestrial Microbial Ecology in Kyoto, Japan will spend the summer of 2013 in Baton Rouge conducting research on pinewood nematode. She and nematologists at LSU will be comparing the pathogenicity of Louisiana and Japanese isolates of the nematode and interactions between the nematodes and the beetle vectors from both countries. In 2011, Ed McGawley spent a month in Japan with Yuko and Kazuyoshi Futai studying pinewood nematode and surveying for reniform nematode. 6 PAGE 6 International Cereal Nematodes Workshop The 4th International Cereal Nematodes Initiative Workshop will be held August 22-24, 2013 in Beijing, China. This workshop is being offered in conjunction with the 10 th International Congress of Plant Pathology (ICPP) scheduled for August 25-30, Workshop topics include the global distribution of cereal nematodes (Heterodera and Pratylenchus), the economic importance and population dynamics of cereal nematodes on wheat, host resistance and other control strategies in wheat, use of molecular tools for research with cereal nematodes, and biological control. If you would like to contribute to the workshop, contact Dr. Deliang Peng (dlpeng@caas.net.cn) and Dr. Amer Dababat (a.dababat@cgiar.org) for application information.
