2 4-H PRINCIPLES Remember these 4-H Principles: A 4-H boy or girl is more important than a 4-H project. A 4-H er should be his/her own best exhibit. PARKING PASSES FA I R Livestock Parking Passes will, again, be one (1) per family. They may be interchangeable in vehicles, but must be in the vehicle at all times when on the fairgrounds, or they will be towed. Additional Livestock Gate Passes can be purchased at the Twin Falls County Fairgrounds Office for $10 each. ANIMAL RECORD BOOKS Don t forget that ALL non-market animal record books are due on August 14th by 4pm to the Extension Office. CARNIVAL MEGA PASS There will be 300 Carnival MEGA passes offered this year. Passes must be picked up before August 14th. The cost will be $60 each, and passes will be good for the entire week. 3 T I M E! RECORD BOOK SIGNATURES As 4-H members are completing their projects for fair, remember what the value of a signature on the record book indicates. The member s signature means that the member has completed all of their requirements, including 4-H club meetings, oral presentations, record book, story, and exhibit to the best of their abilities. A parent s signature indicates their child has done his or her own work, attended their 4-H club meetings and that the youth has completed all project requirements. A leader s signature verifies to the Judge or Extension Staff that all project requirements were completed. If any of the above parties are not satisfied with how the project requirements have been met, they should not sign off on the record books. FOOD BOOTH & PAVILION SIGNUPS - The 2015 Food Booth sign-up sheet and Pavilion sign-up sheet will be available at the Twin Falls County Extension Office, if you have not already reserved your spots. OPEN SLOTS - We still have 2 open slots that need to be filled for the 4-H Food Booth on Thursday, September 3rd and Friday, September 4th. If your club can help out with the 9:45 2:15 slot on either day, please let us know. 6 FAIR PREMIUMS DANISH JUDGING SYSTEM L e a d e r s, p l e a s e remember to tell your members that fair premiums will be given at the October 12 4-H Appreciation Dinner but only if financial reports are turned in. INVOLVEMENT REPORTS A reminder that Twin Falls County DOES NOT require Involvement Reports. All projects judged will receive a ribbon. Incomplete projects will receive a participation ribbon and Cloverbud exhibits will receive a Cloverbud ribbon. The Danish System will be used for judging all projects except for Top Awards. Read below about the Danish Judging System. Awards can be trophies, plaques, or medallions. All award winners will have thank you cards included with their award for the award sponsor. Thank you cards to the award sponsors should be sent as soon as possible after fair. Blue, red, and white ribbons are awarded in all events at the Fair. A white ribbon denotes minimum project growth, understanding of the project, and workmanship for age and experience. The exhibit is satisfactory. A red ribbon signifies good project growth, understanding of the subject, and workmanship for age and experience. The exhibit is neat and good quality. A blue ribbon indicates s u p e r i o r p r o j e c t g r o w t h, understanding of the subject, and workmanship for age and experience. The exhibit is attractive and excellent quality. Please take the time to talk to your children and explain to them that ribbons are just a way of measuring growth in a project area. It is one person s opinion, and not a reflection of who your child is as a person. Regardless of the ribbon they receive, the fact that they started and finished a project and learned new skills is something they can be very proud of! Please remember that each judge will look at the same project differently. When we ask someone to judge at our fair, we are asking for their opinion. Their decisions are final and will not be changed. Protests against the judge will not be accepted. We may not ask them back another year, but they must be respected while judging our exhibits. EXTENSION MOVES TO FAIRGROUNDS The Extension Office will be officially moving to the Tom Parks Pavilion at 12:00pm on Friday, August 28th INCOMPLETE PROJECTS A participation ribbon will be given for incomplete projects. Members can bring completed projects to the Extension Office by October 1st for judging and credit. No premiums will be given. ALL FCS record books, including officer books as well as Community Service Project displays will need to be turned in at the Tom Parks Pavilion, not the Extension Office, no later than 6:00pm Friday, August 28. All non-interview projects need to be turned in by 6:00pm as well. ACCIDENTS & INJURIES There have been several incidents that have occurred around the state lately that have involved a 4-H er or volunteer who has been injured. If you have any questions, regarding this policy, please contact the Twin Falls County Extension Office FAIR THEME: Country Flair at the Fair

REMINDER POLICY FOR 4-H LEADERS By Nancy Melville, Volunteer Specialist Idaho 4-H Youth Development Program Providing a safe environment for our 4-H youth and adults is a top priority for the University of Idaho and the Idaho 4-H Youth Development Program. We take this part of our program very seriously. As you may recall when you became a 4-H volunteer, you received training directly related to Idaho s Child Protection Policy that included the policies and procedures that are required by law. As a part of your application process, you also needed to have a successful public records check that was processed through your respective county office. The University of Idaho is very aware of the importance of this information and continues to work towards providing a safe environment for all involved in their programs. In this regard, the UI is continuing a Protecting Minors Policy that went into effective 2014 for all employees and certified volunteers who will be working with minors. Two important components that are included in this policy build on previous requirements of the 4-H program. UI employees, non-ui employees and certified volunteers who are or will be working with minors in any unsupervised setting must: 1) complete the UI Minor Protection Training annually. 2) have a successful public records review annually. Both the training and the public record review are valid for one year from the training date and/or the date of the review. We realize the importance of making training easily assessable to our volunteers, as well as making sure the public review process is simple and easy to complete. This can be started October 1 and all certified volunteers must have this completed by DECEMBER 1st. Thank you for all that you do to support Idaho 4-H. We are sure that, although completing these requirements will take extra effort on everyone s part, they are absolutely in the best interest of the youth and the adults involved in our programs FAIR THEME: Country Flair at the Fair

13 AMERICORP VISTA VOLUNTEER Hello! My name is Paige Bothman, and I am an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer with the program FIRST working out of the 4-H office in Twin Falls, Idaho. I know that is quite a mouth full so I ll make it a little easier to understand. I am a full time, federal, volunteer. I signed up for the VISTA program, which stands for (Volunteer In Service To America) to help low-income families and families currently experiencing poverty. In a sense that is the entire goal of ALL of the VISTA s across the country. Non-Profits, like FIRST, apply for a VISTA to come in and build capacity for their program. That is just a fancy way of saying we make sure the program is going to last after the year we are here to help. Like I was saying, the non-profit that chose me as their VISTA was FIRST. FIRST is a robotics program for children. FIRST, which stands for (For the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), allows for children of all ages to become active in the scientific community through programming and competing with robots. This fosters children s creative interest in science and opens up the doors to several new and upcoming careers. I encourage all of you to get in touch with me. Whether you have questions about any of the FIRST programs or just want to volunteer, let me be your guide! I am looking forward to an amazing year of service in this wonderful community.
