1 2011 NJTL Capacity Building Program Overview The NJTL Capacity Building Program is designed to provide long-term technical assistance for selected chapters that are committed to achieving significant qualitative and quantitative growth. By focusing on a targeted group of similarly situated and motivated chapters, USTA national staff can best assess the needs of those chapters and tailor assistance accordingly for the greatest impact. Chapters interested must apply. The Capacity Building Program includes a small number of chapters who will receive several major benefits: Management assistance, concentrating on nonprofit organizational development. Assistance with an organization assessment, planning for growth, fundraising, board development, financial management, operating procedures, advocacy, etc. Tennis programming assistance. Assistance with on-court programs, coach training, facilities management, events, recruitment of participants, management of volunteers, etc. Educational programming assistance, with support from field experts. Youth development programming assistance, with support from youth development experts. Networking with a cohort of like-minded NJTL chapter leaders Executive Mentoring with NJTL Flagship chapters For selected chapters, assistance from USTA national staff will be provided via on-site consultation, national workshops, regional workshops, conference calls, visits to mentor sites, web-based information sharing, and referrals to other programs and volunteers with appropriate expertise. Assistance will be provided, as needed, for a period of three years. In addition, chapter leaders will receive stipends to attend the Community Tennis Development Workshop, and special NJTL Capacity Building Program meetings. There may also be opportunities for local and national publicity, support for local fundraising, and small grants to fund critical capacity needs. The objectives of the NJTL Capacity Building Program are to: 1. Assist selected Chapters with an organizational assessment and an individualized strategic approach to growth. 2. Assist selected Chapters with developing additional management capabilities necessary to achieve their goals. 3. Create a State of Readiness to present to potential funders interested in successful youth development programming. 4. Share proven strategies and Best Practices with the larger NJTL chapter network. 1

2 2011 NJTL Capacity Building Program Guidelines Criteria for Consideration: Must be a Registered NJTL Chapter. Must be a 501(c) 3 public charity. Must be a current USTA Organization Member. Must have a minimum population (via 2000 U.S. Census) of 250,000. Must have an on-court Program operating at a minimum of 10 sites. Must have an on-court Program operating on a minimum of 16 courts. Must have an on-court Program operating a minimum of 12 weeks per year. Must have an on-court Program operating a minimum of 54 hours per year. Must have on-court Programming of Novice and upward. Must have an Educational Component in addition to the on-court Program. Must have a minimum NJTL budget of $100,000. Must have a Board of Directors. Must have a history of providing a high level of on-court instruction, frequent play opportunities, and off-court character building opportunities. Must submit two letters of recommendations (one from their USTA section, and preferably one community reference) along with the completed application. Must show fundraising capability and potential for program self-sufficiency. NJTL Capacity Building Program promotion within the program is required. Regular progress reports will be required. Input from the USTA Section s NJTL Staff will be sought. Must be prepared to take steps to build the capacity of the chapter.
