3 COURSE DESCRIPTIONS FREE DISASTER TRAINING...PG. 5-A Damage Assessment...Free (3-hours) Prepares workers to obtain and report information about the extent of damage to buildings and property following a disaster and provide operational support on disaster operations. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Disaster Health Services Overview... Free (4-hours) Describes how Disaster Health Services (DHS) functions on a local or national disaster relief operation and prepares health care workers for assignment. Provides a basic understanding of DHS roles for volunteers cross-training for other functions. Prerequisite: Intro. to Disaster Services. Disaster Welfare Inquiry...Free (3-hours) Learn how to respond to inquiries about the health and well-being of individuals and families within a disaster area, collect information and provide reunification services. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Disaster Health Services Simulation...Free (8-hours) Scenarios and case studies that Disaster Health Services (DHS) workers may encounter on typical disaster relief operations in settings such as shelters, case work centers and emergency aid stations. Participants practice the skills, problem-solving techniques and use of resource materials to manage the various challenges presented. Completion of this course and prerequisite DHS Overview qualifies participants to function as a DHS technician on disaster relief operations. Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, Disaster Health Services Overview. Emergency Response Vehicle Workshop...Free (6-hours) Participants in this hands-on workshop learn to drive, maintain and use a Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV). A road test is included as part of this training. Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, a valid driver s license. Must pass driver s license background check. Family Services: Providing Emergency Assistance...Free (8-hours) Learn how to meet the emergency needs of individual families following a local disaster. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Introduction to Disaster Services...Free (3-hours) Provides basic information about disaster and its effects, outlines the role of agencies in disaster relief, and introduces the participants to American Red Cross Disaster Services. This is a prerequisite for ALL disaster classes. Liaison I...Free (8-hours) Prepares participants to build and maintain collaborative relationships which enhance the community s ability to respond to disaster. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Mass Care Overview...Free (3-hours) Participants will learn how the Red Cross meets immediate food and shelter needs for disaster victims. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Shelter Operations Workshop...Free (3-hours) This workshop prepares participants to effectively and sensitively manage shelter operations as a team, and to meet the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. Logistics Overview...Free (3-hours) Learn how to procure and distribute supplies and materials required for a disaster relief operation. Includes training in warehouse operation, management of vehicles and facility maintenance. Prerequisite: Intro. to Disaster Services. Shelter Operations Simulation...Free (3-hours) This course provides participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful shelter operation. Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, Mass Care Overview, Shelter Operations. Logistics Simulation...Free (3-hours) Simulation training for carrying out the Logistics function described above in the event of a local disaster or as part of major disaster relief operation.prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services, Logistics Overview. Records and Reports I...Free (8-hours) Learn how to process forms, maintain case record files and compile statistics related to a disaster relief operation. Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services. FREE INTERNATIONAL SERVICES EDUCATION...PG. 6-A Orientation to International Services...Free (4-hours) Overview of International Humanitarian Law, tracing and other international services; highlights Fundamental Principles and reasons for Red Cross involvement. Prerequisite for all International Services courses. International Humanitarian Law...Free (4-hours) Explains legal protections for civilians and others in armed conflict, and the work of Red Cross as guardian of the Geneva Conventions. Prerequisite: Orientation to International Services. International Relief and Development...Free (4-hours) Discusses the role of the American Red Cross in international relief and development, with resources and information on delegates, in-kind donations and programs. Prerequisite: Orientation to International Services. HEALTH & SAFETY TRAINING...PG. 7-A Babysitter s Training...$15 (7-hours) Learn how to make good, responsible decisions and keep children in your care safe. Training includes how to handle emergency or illness; choose safe and age-appropriate toys and games; and handle bedtime issues effectively. Crime Avoidance...$20 (1-hour) Learn techniques to help minimize the risk of becoming a target of crime and strategies for responding to threatening situations. Learn how to develop your own personal security plan and general rules for survival. This course does not teach self-defense or martial arts. Adult CPR...$30 (4-hours) Learn correct responses to heart attack and breathing emergencies of adult victims and use of the community s Emergency Medical Service (EMS) system. Adult CPR with First Aid...$40 (6 1 / 2-hours) Learn to treat victims of accidental injuries or sudden illness who need immediate care. Includes Adult CPR. Adult, Infant & Child CPR...$40 (7-hours) Learn the correct responses to cardiac and respiratory emergencies of adults, infants and children. Also covers healthful living and information on making your home a safer place. Adult, Infant & Child CPR with First Aid...$50 (10-hours) Learn to recognize and care for life-threatening emergencies in adults, infants and children such as respiratory and cardiac problems, sudden illness and injuries. Basic First Aid (without CPR)...$30 (4-hours) Learn how to recognize and care for victims of injury and sudden illness. Infant & Child CPR with First Aid...$40 (8-hours) Learn to treat common injuries among children from birth to 8 years old. Learn accident prevention and safety tips, and how to perform the lifesaving skills of rescue breathing, one-rescuer CPR and first aid for choking. Adult CPR with First Aid and AED...$50 (8-hours) Learn to treat victims of accidental injuries or sudden illnesses who need immediate care. Includes Adult CPR and how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) as a citizen responder. CPR for the Professional Rescuer...$50 (10-hours) Provides the professional rescuer with the knowledge and skills necessary in an emergency to help sustain life, reduce pain and minimize the consequences of respiratory and cardiac emergencies until more advanced medical help can arrive. 3-A Registration Information on Page 10-A or call
4 VOLUNTEERS ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THE RED CROSS...WE NEED YOU! People know they can trust Red Cross to be there in times of crisis or emergency. We do it with the help of trained volunteers people like you who are members of our Disaster Action Teams (DATs). The Red Cross responds to hundreds of single family and apartment fires each year in metro Atlanta. Within minutes of a local disaster, a Red Cross DAT immediately responds, providing emergency relief to the individuals and families who need assistance. We always need additional caring people with a spirit of adventure to join our area teams. As a member of a Disaster Action Team, you offer comfort, reassurance and an encouraging word, while meeting the emergency needs of those involved in a disaster. Red Cross will teach you everything from conducting damage assessments and procuring supplies to processing forms Awoman was forced to flee her war-torn country for safe haven in America, leaving her husband behind in the combat zone. Then she received a message I am alive written by her husband s own hand. The anguish of separation is devastating and can be worse than any physical injury, but the peace of mind at hearing news about a loved one can bring healing. A 1905 U.S. Congressional charter charges the American Red Cross with providing international relief to victims of DISASTER ACTION TEAMS HELP NEIGHBORS IN NEED and keeping case record files. You ll even learn how to drive and maintain an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV). Disaster training is offered year-round and is free to participants. Any skill or amount of time you have to donate is valuable to the Red Cross. Bilingual abilities are always a plus, as Atlanta continues to become a more international city. We also have specialized volunteer opportunities for licensed mental health professionals and nurses. We ll Be There but we need your help and are willing to work around your busy schedule. INTERNATIONAL SERVICES FOR AN INTERNATIONAL CITY: Red Cross provides message and tracing services in metro Atlanta conflict and disaster. This means we not only meet the material needs of victims by supplying food and clothing, but we also address their anguish and psychological wounds. One way we provide these services for families separated by war, conflict, changing world conditions or disaster is by helping to locate, communicate with and often facilitate their reunion with relatives. As you read this, the tracing process is under way in metro Atlanta. Local Red Cross workers are helping people in our community to learn the fate of relatives in the world s trouble spots and vice versa. The American Red Cross and Red Cross societies in other countries form a worldwide communications network through which life-and-death news is transmitted daily. Annually, the school trains more than 220 water safety instructors and lifeguards and teaches other courses such as basic water rescue and CPR for the professional rescuer. Whether you want to land a summer job at a neighborhood swim club or just create a safe environment for your own backyard pool, you can get the training you need at the George N. Ferguson Aquatic School. You ll develop the skills needed to quickly respond to waterrelated emergencies and you ll be certified by the American Red Cross the recognized leader in water safety education.
