1 ~ Where the World Meets the West ~ Vice President, Development THE OPPORTUNITY The Glenbow Museum is seeking an innovative, experienced fundraising professional to lead our fund Development activities. The Vice President, Development will help to build our individual giving program while increasing our membership, corporate giving, sponsorship, planned and annual giving programs. Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President will also serve on the Strategy Group, Glenbow s senior management team. ABOUT THE GLENBOW MUSEUM Our Vision: More people interacting with art, culture and ideas, more often. Our Mission: Glenbow is a cultural cornerstone, growing generations of art and history lovers. We welcome visitors, partners and supporters to join us here, in the community and in our virtual spaces for an exchange of ideas. Our collection represents who we are, where we have been and informs our future. We show things worth seeing and tell stories worth hearing. Our programs, exhibitions and services foster learning and an appreciation of art and culture in our daily lives. With over one million artifacts and more than 30,000 works of art, the diverse collections of art, history and world cultures make Glenbow the largest museum in Western Canada. Categorized into seven collections: Art, Indigenous Studies, Cultural History, Military History, Mineralogy, Library and Archives, our world-class collections position Glenbow as a leading institution in Canada and beyond. The Library and Archives is the largest non-governmental archives and library in Western Canada. The Glenbow Museum is renowned for its innovative school programming and learning opportunities, both at the museum and beyond its four walls, including distance and online education. The Glenbow Museum is a non-profile organization founded in 1954 by Eric Lefferty Harvie who in 1966 donated his collections to the Province of Alberta. The collections are largely owned by the Province of Alberta and, as an independent non-profit organization, Glenbow is contracted by the province to care for and provide access to the collections on behalf of the people of Alberta. The Museum has an annual operating budget of approximately $10M, which is supported through government grants, museum admissions and memberships, earned revenues, endowment contributions, and through the generous support of our donors who contributed $2M last year in addition to many gift-in-kind contributions. In 2009, the Glenbow had over 144,000 visitors, and 3,000 members. The endowment fund, established by our founder and augmented since then, is currently valued at $27.5M
2 IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE The Vice President, Development will be an energetic and strategic fundraising professional with proven skills in developing a sustainable, multi-faceted fundraising plan. Building on the Glenbow s evolving corporate sponsorship program, the ideal candidate will develop a robust individual Major Gifts program, including prospect identification and evaluation processes, prospect research, cultivation and solicitation strategies, and stewardship and recognition plans. Along with the Development Team, the VP will also focus on expanding and growing the membership base, annual and planned giving programs, corporate and sponsorship activities, and foundation and grant seeking programs by implementing best practices and providing team leadership and direction. A compelling storyteller who employs a creative and strategic approach to communications, the successful candidate will work collaboratively to develop appropriate messaging for donors and prospects with the goal of connecting caring individuals with the Museum. The Vice President will understand and value the link between membership and donors, and will work to increase the membership while developing acquisition and retention plans for both donors and members. An active relationship builder who is enthusiastic about the transformative powers of art and history on society, the VP will align donors passions and interests with opportunities at the Glenbow Museum. The ideal candidate will be socially versatile and able to build enduring bridges both inside and outside of our organization. An authentic and charismatic communicator, the Vice President will be an articulate ambassador who will reflect the Glenbow s renewed presence in our community. The ideal candidate will be a confident, accessible manager who will guide and mentor Development staff and volunteers. The Vice President will mentor, support, and partner with Board members and senior Museum staff in major gift fundraising activities, helping others to understand their roles in the donor cycle and, in turn, benefitting from their insight and experience. The successful candidate will be an energetic team player who is keen to learn and explore new ideas. A synergistic leader who will actively collaborate with the Strategy Group, the Vice President will generate new ideas and programs that will increase funding, and that will ultimately contribute to a successful and sustainable future for the Glenbow Museum. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES In the role of Vice President, Development, the incumbent will: Develop and advance a sustainable philanthropic development plan and program including growing the membership base, annual and planned giving programs, corporate and sponsorship activities, and foundation and grant seeking programs. Compose and execute donor acquisition, retention, recognition, and stewardship plans. Generate a sustainable prospect research pipeline for individual and corporate donors to identify and qualify potential donors. Cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors, in partnership with the President & CEO, Board members, other key volunteers and senior museum staff. Engage, train and support Board members and program staff in major gift fundraising activities. Provide leadership, direction, and coaching to philanthropy and membership staff. In partnership with the Marketing Communications team, create collateral fundraising materials including case statements, briefing notes, proposals, brochures, thank-you letters, and other fundraising communications as required
3 Generate regular reports on fundraising activities and results. Work with the Finance department and CFO to ensure that all financial records, reports and cash flow statements reflect fundraising results and activities in a timely and accurate manner. FOR MORE INFORMATION This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of a creative and passionate team committed to growing the vision of the Glenbow Museum.
