1 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION Brown County News & Notes Greetings! I am thankful that we have such a great group of volunteers offering their time and support to the Brown County 4-H program. The April 1 st Enrollment deadline is fast approaching and there are a lot of different 4-H activities that are starting up. It is more important then ever to make sure we are staying up to date on opportunities, deadlines and other important dates. As always, there is a lot of information packed into this newsletter. Please be sure to review is carefully and share it with your 4-H families. As volunteers you are our link to our 4-H members, so we need to be sure to pass along information as we get it to you. As we approach the April 1 st deadline, please be checking over all the information provided in your enrollment packet carefully. Double checking all your clubs enrollment forms and other documentation that has to be turned in. If all the pieces are not completed, your club will not be an official club in good standing and this could jeopardize your status as a volunteer and the kids status as members. As always, please let us know if you have any questions. 3 Environmental/Recycling Information Did you know that Brown County Extension gets funding from the Solid Waste Authority (SWA)? This funding helps us provide great programming throughout the year. One of the reasons we receive this funding is because we include various environmental education programs and opportunities. Because we receive this funding, we must provide reports to the SWA on a monthly basis and we need your help! Please share with the Extension Office if you have a recycling/environmental officer; if your club does a roadside cleanup; or anything else related to environmental education or recycling that your club does! See the included flier for more information on our county wide recycling project! Left: Members of the K-9 Renegades pictured with a Plarn sleeping mat. Plarn is plastic yarn that is then crocheted into sleeping mats and sent to Hati. The club donated several balls of plarn to a local church. Right: Cloverbuds from the Huntington Hotshots made lightening bugs out of plastic bottles and other recycled materials! Is your club doing something interesting with recycled materials or to help the environment? Share the information with Christy! You may show up in the next newsletter or on our Facebook page and the information will be shared with the Solid Waste Authority. Township Clean-Up Days Some clubs participate in Township Roadside Clean-Up days as a fundraiser. Roadside clean-ups are organized by the township trustees and are often done around their annual clean up days. If your club is interested, contact your township trustees to find out more information. Please see the next page for the 2015 Township Clean Up Schedule. Please remember all club fundraisers need to be approved by the 4-H Committee before they are completed. The fundraising form is on our website.

5 OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION County Wide Recycling Project Recycle those aluminium cans! The Brown County 4-H Committee is sponsoring a county wide recycling project for Clubs can participate by submitting receipts showing proof of recycling their aluminum cans. What s in it for your club? Helping the environment by keeping aluminum cans out of the landfill! Clubs who participate and recycle a minimum of 10lbs of aluminum cans will automatically receive $25 from the 4-H Committee Prizes will be given for the top 3 clubs. This will be determined by the total weight divided by the number of members in the club. 1 st Place: $50 2 nd Place: $40 3 rd Place: $30 How do clubs participate? Encourage your clubs members and families to recycle aluminum cans. You have options for tracking the amount recycled o You can set up an account at Adams Brown Recycling for your club and use this as an additional fundraiser. When an individual drops off cans, they tell the staff which club they are affiliated with and the money from the cans are put into an account for your club AND they track the weight for you. o If you chose to use a different recycling facility then Adams Brown Recycling, or if individuals wish to recycle the cans on their own, ask for a receipt with the date and total number of pounds of aluminum cans recycled. Then provide a copy of the receipt to your club adviser to turn into the Extension Office. Tracking of the weight of the cans for the purpose of the prizes will be from April 1 st to October 6 th. Clubs can turn in receipts dated anytime between April 1 st and October 6 th. Final receipts must be turned in to the Extension Office by 4:30pm on October 6 th. Reduce! Reuse!
