3 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The focus of the governments globally has been centered on eliminating poverty, reduce inequality, support small enterprises, promote job creation and foster economic growth. In order to meet this goal, the understanding and conceptualization as well as practice of enterprise development, supplier development and transformation needs to be taken to the next level. These practices also need to factor the issues of localisation, in other words keeping skills and money within local communities. For this to be achieved Corporate South Africa plays a critical role in transformation and initiatives such as Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD) are key in driving sustainable and commercially viable local development. Global economic policies have shifted towards supporting enterprise development, entrepreneurship and small to medium enterprises. It has long been established that if Africa is serious about economic growth and reducing the rising unemployment, governments will have to take real steps to improve the climate for entrepreneurs. In this regard procurement becomes important tool for achieving economic growth, social and other objectives that leads to meaningful participation in the economy to achieve sustainable development and general prosperity. At its heart, ESD and ED is about leveraging procurement spending to promote skills development and job creation. Although this topic is high on the national agenda, it is often difficult to implement effectively at an organisational level. Small black-owned suppliers face a number of challenges, including insufficient skills, and for start-up organisations, a lack of track record. Funding can also be an issue, as these organisations do not have the capital available that their larger counterparts have. In order to effectively assist these companies and the economy as a whole, enterprises need to take a multi-faceted approach that ensures growth whilst providing skills transfer, helping to achieve sustainability, skills development, employment and job creation. This year s event will be cornerstone for practitioners to discuss these critical issues in a bid to find solutions and create ED and ESD strategies that work towards transformation of our economy beyond compliance issues.
