6 January 218 OSHA Safety Tip of the Month! Work place safety is important no matter where you work. However, in the construction industry, workers are susceptible to injuries. Below are a few tips on scaffolding safety. Hazard: When scaffolds are not erected or used properly, fall hazards can occur. About 2.3 million construction workers frequently work on scaffolds. Protecting these workers from scaffold-related accidents would prevent an estimated 4,5 injuries and 5 fatalities each year. Solutions: A scaffold must be sound, rigid and sufficient to carry its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load without settling or displacement. It must be erected on solid footing. Unstable objects, such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks or concrete blocks must not be used to support scaffolds or planks. Scaffolds must not be erected, moved, dismantled or altered except under the supervision of a competent person. Scaffolds must be equipped with guardrails, midrails and toeboards. Scaffold accessories such as braces, brackets, trusses, screw legs or ladders that are damaged or weakened from any cause must be immediately repaired or replaced. Scaffold platforms must be tightly planked with scaffold plank grade material or equivalent. A "competent person" must inspect the scaffolding and, at designated intervals, reinspect it. Rigging on suspension scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each shift and after any occurrence that could affect structural integrity to ensure that all connections are tight and that no damage to the rigging has occurred since its last use. Synthetic and natural rope used in suspension scaffolding must be protected from heatproducing sources. Employees must be instructed about the hazards of using diagonal braces as fall protection. Scaffold can be accessed by using ladders and stairwells. Scaffolds must be at least 1 feet from electric power lines at all times. For more information please visit

7 January 218 Good Relationships Build Your Business By Sherri Davis-Garner President Styling Your Life Solutions Too often, people in business focus on building the business and not building the customer experience. In business, it s referred to as CRM (Customer Relationship Management). Companies that practice CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and are good at it realize that the interaction with the customer is the focal point. Every point of contact between the customer and the company is key because a happy customer drives sales growth and retains the customer for future business. This brings me to ask the question: How are you treating your customers? The reality is competition is tough! When you treat your customer with respect and value then your customer will return that value to you. However, when your customer can t get things resolved, can t get in contact with you and can t get quality, the customer will divorce you. The White House Office of Consumer Affairs did a study and discovered that 8% of U.S. consumers would pay more to ensure a superior customer experience. Without a doubt, superior customer service is paramount. It s not an option, it s mandatory to doing business. There are retention strategies which are smart solutions that I use with customers. They are: 1.) Communication with your customer is not an option. When your customer provides feedback, Immediately follow-up and follow-through. 2.) Find what your customer likes. Begin thinking of ways to add value to their experience. Connect through Facebook or LinkedIn to stay in contact. 3.) Resolve complaints immediately! According to Eastbridge Consulting Group, 7% of complaining customers will do business again if the company resolves issues in their favor. 4.) Never stop building customer relationships. Build loyalty so your customer doesn t divorce you.

8 Estimating Assistance Program January 218 The ability to estimate effectively and accurately is essential to every contractor who wants to make money. Bid too high and you ll lose the bid. Bid to low and you wish you could give the project to someone else. While sound execution is necessary also, success begins with an accurate estimate. Today, technology has created a way to lessen the gap between those who win bids and those that lose them. Numerous bidding and estimating software programs exist to help make the process easier and more accurate for any contractor, but particularly smaller ones. In Q1 218, MDOT DBE Supportive Services will offer an Estimating Assistance Program ( EAP ) which offers two paths to the MDOT DBE wanting to close the bidding gap. The first makes the vetted software available at the DBE Supportive Services Office by any Mississippi certified DBE by merely scheduling time to visit. Additionally, DBEs interested purchasing software for use on their personal computer can do so at a reduced rate. The second competitive process, involves an application, as well meeting minimum and specific requirement. At day s end, the competitive process winners receive bidding and estimating software for valued at $1,2 for a mere $1. Software: MDOT DBE Supportive Services offers PlanSwift, the bidding and estimating software that caters to multiple building construction trades: general contracting, concrete, drywall, electrical, flooring, framing, HVAC, landscape, painting, plumbing and other specialties. The software helps reduce takeoff time, manage small and large projects with timely calculations, and helps you easy adjust to cost projections. For the DBE choosing the purchase track, selected candidates receive a year of technical support services, including free one-on-one or group online training, tutorial videos, knowledgebase articles, support chat, webinars, remote assistance, live forums, as well as question and answer links. PlanSwift is standalone software, with no monthly or annual fees. You load it and own it. So visit PlanSwift at for more info and to test drive the software to see if it s the right fit for your office. Requirements: The basic requirements for those seeking a personal copy/license: possession of basic computer skills; sitting through the PlanSwift demonstration (1 hours) of the software; mandatory attendance at allotted (2)online training sessions; having a primary office in Mississippi; and possessing the capacity to bid on DOT and other federally funded projects. Note, priority will be given to DBE firms in the MDOT Business Development Program. A total of (1) licenses will be awarded in fiscal year 218. Application Process: Each applicant must a brief narrative outlining planned use of the software, proposed frequency of use, current bidding patterns and frequency, explain how the software might impact your business, and a signed letter of commitment. If you have any questions, please call the Supportive Services Office at The EAP is designed with you, the DBE, in mind. The program will help foster a better understanding of the bidding and estimating process while positioning you for optimal growth and revenue expansion. Disclaimer: Neither Systems nor MDOT assume any liability for any company s use of PlanSwift products. The software is provided 'as is' without warranty of any kind, either express or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of fitness for any purpose, or the warranty of non-infringement.
