Small grant program providing funds for up to 2 years at a total budget of $50,000/year Types of projects: Pilot or feasibility studies Secondary analysis of existing data Small, self-contained research projects Development of research methodology Development of new research technology

5 Specific Aims - Tips Do not include too many aims for time/budget of grant proposal Leave white space to make it easier on the reviewer to read Two methods: Central Hypothesis (goal) followed by Specific Aims Specific Aims with each having their own hypothesis

7 Significance Provides background Relates project to public health Emphasizes importance of problem Incorporates links to Institute s Strategic Plan Research Goals if possible Discusses critical barriers within the field Explains how current project will advance knowledge of the field Describes how field will change as a result of the studies undertaken

8 Innovation How does proposed project seek to shift understanding in the field Describes any novel approaches, methodology or instrumentation that will be used Discusses why the novel approaches are better than current practices in the field Explains any refinements or improvements in current knowledge that will take place due to research performed

9 Approach Overall strategy, methodology and analyses that will be used to gather data Mentions how data will be collected, analyzed and interpreted Problems, alternative strategies and benchmarks for success Project feasibility if at an early stage Preliminary data (if available; not necessary) Points out elements that might be hazardous to people or animals and how risks will be mitigated

13 Vertebrate Animals 4. Describe what will be done to ensure that distress, pain, discomfort and injury will be limited to what is necessary for experimental work 5. Describe any method of euthanasia to be used and why it was selected

14 PMCID Numbers As of May 2008, all PIs must list the PMCID (PubMed Central reference) number for publications that fall under the NIH Public Access Policy within their grant references PMCID numbers: Are available for any papers that have been funded by NIH grant money and are peer reviewed Can be found by doing a search for articles referenced in PubMed (listed on the abstract page)
