In 1929, the professional and academic Hispanic community of San Antonio decided to create a business institution with the aim of treating everyone as a first-class member, regardless of race or organizational size. The call to action was simple: Hispanics are here, we want to do business, we want to help our community and we want to succeed. Hence the FIRST Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in the United States of America was born. Being the first has allowed the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to create some of the most innovative programming in the country. Most recently, we have also been the first to embark on major initiatives around small business accelerators, STEM education and increasing women as political candidates, all efforts that are being sought out as best practices by other entities. We are also not typical in the value we bring to our members. Many times, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce has been the first to walk up the steps of our State or National capitols, advocating around legislation that is relevant and impactful to membership. Closer to home, we pay attention to what contracts are being awarded by City Hall and what ordinances affect our community. We also proudly help members get certified to do business with the City, County and State and we have worked to help appoint the first Latinos/as to public boards. Wanting to ensure that there is a strong pool of diverse executives for our corporate members, we also execute three of the strongest leadership development programs in the region every year.
