BRANTFORD VISITOR & TOURISM CENTRE PRESENT: Aleah Durham, Vernon Payne (Chair), David McKee, Lorna Stratton, Frank Zaunscherb, Ana Olson REGRETS: Councillor Cheryl Antoski, Pat Davies ABSENT: STAFF: Craig McKibbon James Clark, Sara Munroe, Ela Stypa Jones (Recording Secretary) Chair Vern Payne called the meeting to order at 3:30pm. 1. ROLL CALL V. Payne welcomed E. Stypa Jones to the position of Arts & Culture Coordinator. She will be in the position until mid-january DECLARATION OF CONFLICT There were no declarations of conflict of interest. 3. DELEGATIONS There were no delegations. 4. ITEMS FOR CONSIDERATION 4.1 Presentation: Creativity Hub Tamara Loucks and Adrian Beam of Wilfrid Laurier University gave a presentation on The Combine. The highlights of the presentation were: A creativity hub for teaching, learning, research, filming and networking. It will be a place for creative content production on many levels blending education, community, industry and government.

2 May 9, 2018 Page 2 Its name is based on the agricultural history of this community with its connections to Massey Ferguson and The Cockshutt Plow Company. Located at the Brantford Convention Centre (100 Market Street) with a 4,500 sq ft film set. The set of Lost Girl was gifted to The Combine and will be used for teaching, filming and can be used for criminology classes for recreating crimes. Partnerships with Six Nations Polytechnic, The City of Brantford, Conestoga College, the industry and the community at large. Three pillars: Student Experience, Research & Innovation and Economic Development. S. Munroe to send T. Loucks contact information to BCAC members Municipal Cultural Plan Annual Report BCAC Annual Report to be presented to city council for the July meeting. Video to be prepared that will show images with the arts/culture elements removed showing the impact of not having it as part of the community. Since this is a committee of council, BCAC can have access to the photo library. Items to be used within video to include: stats, visitors, attendance, economic impact, employment stats. The presentation to council is 10 minutes total with questions. The video should not be more that 1-2 minutes. The intent of video is to be shocking. What is at risk of being cut? Need to continue to invest money into arts/culture. S. Munroe to arrange a meeting with Yvonne Morrison-Millar (Glenhyrst Art Gallery) to work on gathering images. S. Munroe to send A. Olson the City s definition of culture. A. Olson to have the video ready for BCAC to preview at next meeting (June 13 th ). E. Stypa Jones will send the presentation video to Clerks by July 1 st.

Zaunscherb THAT the April 11, 2018 Brantford Cultural Advisory Committee Minutes BE ADOPTED. 5.2 Council Updates No update. 5.3 Department Updates S. Munroe will be keeping Grants and Public Art as part of her portfolio while she is in the Manager, Tourism & Marketing contract. Natalie Walker, Tourism Information Coordinator, has completed the Explore the Grand Signature Experience Guide. It is now a yearly publication which contains an insert of coupons that all relate back to the website. With the rebranding of the casino to Elements Casino Brantford, Tourism Brantford is updating the directional signage for that property within the city. N. Walker is also updating the website, which is updated seasonally. Donna Clements is having the Sport Tear Map reprinted with updates and will be seeking sponsorship from hotels, which are prominently featured on map.

4 May 9, 2018 Page 4 Maureen Cowper is organizing a FAM tour with Grand Experiences Outdoor Adventure Compan7 on May 28 th. There are 20 people signed up. It will feature a cycling element to an organic farm. Tourism Brantford s grant application to Canada Summer Jobs was successful and they will be hiring a summer student for community outreach at events with the Special Events Vehicle. Community Cultural Investment Program allocations have been made and everyone has been notified. Cultural & Built Heritage Grant Program s interim report has been submitted with projects to be completed by this fall. The new intake of applications will be May 30 th. The Quidditch Canada tournament bid was withdrawn from consideration due to proposed date conflicts and location/weather limitations. Even though the event couldn t be accommodated, there is an incredible amount of interest and support from the community for a Harry Potter -themed event. Online support to the Brant Museum Crawl with Facebook postings for each event. Brant Performing Arts group is preparing to have the next installment of their events bookmark produced. Arts & Culture groups are being notified that registration is now open for Culture Days this September 28-30, Moved by: D. McKee Seconded by: A. Olson THAT the Council and Department Updates BE RECEIVED. 6. WORKING GROUP, SUB-COMMITTEES, AND LIAISONS 6.1 Public Art Subcommittee There is damage to a monument near Lorne Park. It is unsure what monument it is and who is responsible for upkeep. It may be a Parks & Rec item to repair. J. Clark to take a picture and send to S. Munroe to follow up.

5 May 9, 2018 Page Cultural and Built Heritage Grant Program Advisory Committee Applications are due at the end of May. 6.3 Brant Museums & Galleries Association The Ontario Museum Association conference proposal was submitted. Should know by this summer if it is successful. A newspaper report about the murals at St. Jude s Anglican Church said they would be covered with a false wall instead of removed. They will not be destroyed. The owner is legally bound to keep them. Working to preserve them is a good-will gesture on behalf of the owner. Myrtleville House Museum continues to explore options for its space. A survey was conducted with the local community about what they want to see have done with the property. The challenge is to keep it cultural, and sustainable. It is in need of repairs. The original agreement with Heritage Canada was to preserve the museum. Many suggestions at community meetings, however, they are outside what is tradition arts/culture. It was narrowed down to five options. The Ventin Group was hired to explore these options. 6.4 Brant Performing Arts Members are busy preparing for their events and performances. 6.5 Tourism Advisory Committee The committee discussed their 2018 priorities. A focus will be on bicycle tourism through Ontario by Bike and Cycling Ontario. Cycling will be added as a working group of TAC. Discussed the new condos being built at 1 Wellington Street and the issue of its view behind the Bell Memorial Monument. TAC was updated on the staffing changes within the Tourism division. In partnership with the County of Brant, the new Outdoor Adventure Map was released. The BIA representative spoke to them about the concerts this summer in Victoria Park. 6.6 Task Force for a Mid-Sized Performance Space The City s grant application to the Canada Cultural Spaces Fund to undertake a feasibility study for a mid-sized performance space

6 May 9, 2018 Page 6 was successful in the amount of $36,500, with the City matching that amount. Purchasing has been alerted and the proponent has been selected through RFP. This was done in advance as it was needed to complete the grant application. 6.7 Community Liaisons Brantford Public Library Grand re-opening was held on April 27, Many people attended with families attending and staying all day for activities. 7. RESOLUTIONS Food for Fines program resulted in over $1,000 in overdue fines forgiven and 455 lbs. of food donated for the Brantford Food Bank. Graham Chittenden, a speaker from the grand re-opening weekend, now has his own special airing on May 25th (Graham Chittenden: Reluctant Adult streaming on CraveTV ) Author Deborah Ellis to be featured on May 25 th as part of the speaker series. E. Stypa Jones to contact Graham Chittenden about the Featured Artist program. Glenhyrst Art Gallery of Brant Family Arts Day - Sunday, May 27, 2018 from 11:00 am 4:00 pm. Taste of Glenhyrst tickets sold out very quickly. Selling more tickets isn t an option. Space is not the issue, but rather having the suppliers/restaurants provide more food when they aren t paid for this event.
