1 MADBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY Where our Community Comes Together New Madbury Public Library Preliminary Rendition Manypenny Murphy Architecture, Portsmouth, NH From Closet to Community Cornerstone 300 years ago, New Hampshire became the first state in America to establish a State Library and now leads the nation in making books available to all residents. There are 234 towns and cities in New Hampshire and 234 public libraries. Our libraries are no longer a place just to house books, they provide spaces for people to share ideas, participate in educational programs and foster creativity. The Madbury Public Library began in 2001 as a small collection of donated books housed in a Town Hall closet and has now become an essential presence in our small town. In 2003, the Library moved to its current location, a town owned ranch house which had been the home of the Police Department. This building was intended to be an interim home for the library. For 15 years, Madbury citizens, have supported a Capital Reserve Fund for the construction of a permanent home for the library.

2 THE LIBRARY TODAY Thanks to our dedicated staff and volunteers and despite serious space limitations, our Library offers an impressive number of programs and activities fulfilling our mission to provide free and open access to ideas and information that support education for all ages. Last year s tax dollars helped: A young woman find a job by using a library computer to work on her resume and employment applications. The library currently has a collection of 14,660 + books, audiobooks and DVDs with a circulation of over 8,000 items. Patrons have downloaded nearly 2,000 titles and e-books from NH Download, and visits to the library and its sponsored activities have increased yearly. Friends of Madbury Library, a 501(c)3 entity, play a key role in the success of our Library. With community support of their annual fund drive, basket raffle and book sales, our active Friends group helps to grow and sustain our Library and sponsor many programs. Current Programs and Activities Weekly story times for children After-school C.L.I.M.B. program for school ages: Children Learning, Inventing, Making, Building Read With Me programs with Pet Partner dogs Grover and Digby Summer reading and school vacation programs Adult Book, Writing and Quilting Groups Access to NH Download and Interlibrary Loan Services Passes to Seacoast Science Center, Bedrock Gardens and the NH Children s Museum Shared passes to Boston Museums Outreach to Carriage Hill Assisted Living, Little Tree Center and Moharimet School Children improve their reading and social skills by attending story times and the very popular Read to Grover and Digby programs. Bring community residents together through the ongoing writing, quilting and book groups providing face to face interactions so important in our technology driven times. Make a little boy s 3rd birthday very special by providing a pass to the Children s Museum. Accomplishments 2017 CLiF Grant Madbury was one of twelve libraries in New Hampshire and Vermont to receive a CLiF (Children s Literacy Foundation) Rural Library Grant. This grant included $2,000 worth of new children s books for our library, $500 for new books for the school library, and two author visits at Moharimet Elementary School; one in the fall of 2017 and one in the spring of Wentworth Family Trust Grant Thanks to $2,000 from the Wentworth Family Trust, the library purchased new book browsing units for the Children s Room. They provide our children and adults with easier access to their new favorite books. They will be perfect in the more spacious children s area of the new building. Kayla Morin named NH Children s Librarian of 2017 This honor was given in recognition of Kayla s tireless devotion to the Goodwin Library in her hometown of Farmington. 3 Planning: THE PLAN Community Cornerstone For 15 years, residents have enthusiastically voted at Town Meeting to support the Library Building Capital Reserve Fund. In 2014, Friends of Madbury Library, a designated 501(c)3 entity, joined with Library Trustees to spearhead planning efforts. Through meetings with residents, visits to libraries and consultation with experts, plans have been carefully laid to ensure a successful project. In 2015, members of the Building Steering Committee, (comprised of Trustees, Friends, Library Director, Selectmen and residents with professional building expertise) began working with architects from Manypenny Murphy Architecture of Portsmouth to design the new library. The Design Development Phase of the project is complete, and the preliminary cost estimate is $1.3M. Location: The new building will be situated on currently owned town property adjacent to the Town Hall Interim Library Building Concerns It has insufficient space for staff, patrons and programs. It is not ADA compliant - a federal requirement for public buildings - providing limited access for the elderly and patrons who are disabled. There is inadequate parking for patrons and staff. It does not meet current town and state building codes. Most of the collection is housed in the cellar preventing public browsing. Restroom accessibility from the cellar community room requires going outside and re-entering the main library space. Expansion or redesign on this site is cost prohibitive and would not address all concerns.

4 THE NEW MADBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY The new 4,500 square foot library will: Be a welcoming, attractive building reflecting the rural character of Madbury while complimenting the architecture of Town Hall. Provide accessibility and adequate parking for all. Include a cafe-style community room plus outdoor garden and play spaces with seating for relaxed reading and socializing. Feature quiet areas for reading and study, a spacious children s room, a youth/teen area, and space for patrons to browse our impressive collection. Incorporate sustainability with a wellsealed and insulated building envelope, high efficiency heating and cooling systems using renewable materials where possible. 5 THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Now is the Time to Build LET S CELEBRATE MADBURY S 250TH BIRTHDAY BY BREAKING GROUND IN 2018 FOR OUR NEW LIBRARY! Funding for the new library will be a public-private partnership. The preliminary cost estimate, including all site work, is $1.3M. Selectmen have proposed the total town (public) contribution to be $975,000. This includes funds already in the Capital Reserve Fund and additional funding, subject to voter approval. There will not be a bond for the project. The Capital Campaign (private portion of the partnership) is now underway with a goal of $350,000. As of January 31st, Friends of Madbury Library, Trustees and dedicated volunteers have raised over $200,000 from early supporters, pledges and fund-raising activities. Recently, the McIninch and Samuel P. Hunt Foundations each awarded $25,000 to the Campaign in matching challenge grants. We are happy to report that we have met the McIninch challenge. To avoid continual increases in construction materials and labor costs, it is to our benefit that we secure funding and break ground this year. Volunteer and Donor Information How Can I Donate? All donors will be acknowledged in a Book of Benefactors according to their level of giving, unless they prefer to remain anonymous. Donors who make a gift of $2,500 or more will be recognized on a prominent display in the new library. Associate $1 - $100 There will not be a bond for the project. Currently, the Madbury Library operating budget is 3.4% of the annual town operating budget. A property with an assessed valuation of $100,000 contributes $28.00 per year to the library. It is estimated that increased expenses for electricity and maintenance will result in an increase of $4.00 per year for a property with an assessed valuation of $100,000.
