A special welcome to those teachers who are new to the profession. While we know that the cuts to education are (and will continue) affecting our classrooms, I know you will approach the difficulties the cuts present with professionalism. Because it is about the students. As educators we build upon our experiences, enhancing student learning as well as our own professional development. Be mindful of your colleagues. Check in with them on a regular basis to see how they are doing. These relationships are very important to nurture and maintain. As your Local President, I look forward to working with you over the year on Union matters. Please feel free to contact me at any time should you have any questions, concerns or suggestions. The strength of our Union is built from the collective strengths of each individual member, and requires everyone s input and insight to keep our voice strong for public education. I hope that the 01-1 is successful for you both professionally and personally. The Halifax City Local executive will continue to work on your behalf to ensure a positive working relationship between our employer and NSTU members. 2 P a g e TERM REHIRE STATUS Please remind any term rehire teacher who may be working in your school as a substitute that jobs are being posted on a weekly basis. There are still teachers who remain on the Priority List. Their term rehire rights remain in effect until October 15, 01. Back to School Social Will be on October 1th. Stay tuned for more details. Class Size and Composition The NSTU is looking for specific information regarding class sizes and how the education cuts have affected our classrooms. What is your class size? Above cap? Have the needs in your classroom changed significantly? Are there more combined classes? Once again the Halifax City Local together with the Dartmouth Local will be hosting a Rep Retreat on November 16th and 17th at Oak Island Inn. Reps are encouraged to register for our Local retreat. Registration forms will be available at our Local meeting, and will be sent out electronically when we have your Do you have enough space in your classroom? lab? gym? Please send any comments ASAP to halifaxcity@nstu.ca You can also post to Facebook in our closed group Halifax City Local NSTU. HRSB/NSTU PD Profiles Teachers are reminded that Certification Regulations 10(A) 1.b requires them to complete a report on their professional development activities for the previous year and submit it to their employing school board, for inclusion in their personal file, by September 0 th of each year. Local Rep Retreat To assist teachers, the NSTU has developed a form that may be downloaded and printed and submitted to the Board. These forms are NOT to be submitted to the NSTU. Forms can be found in the Professional Development section New Member Conference September 9-0th The Halifax City Local is a co-sponsor of the New Member Conference being held at the Dr. Tom Parker Building and the Delta Halifax. Teachers who are between 0 and 5 years, including substitutes are encourage to express interest in attending this conference. This conference is offered to new teachers free of charge. For more information, your Local President, Keri Butler, at halifaxcity@nstu.ca. Workshops include: Insurance information, NSTU benefits, structure of the NSTU, Professional Development funding opportunities, classroom management, dealing with difficult parents and many more. The Halifax City Local has 10 spots available for teachers, and there are overall spaces for substitute teachers.
3 P a g e NSTU Professional Association October Conference Day October 6, 01 On the fourth Friday in October, NSTU members from around the province are invited to attend professional development conferences organized by our Professional Associations. The catalogue of program offerings demonstrates a breadth of curriculum based and other professional development opportunities that are designed to ensure Nova Scotia's students benefit from the latest pedagogical advances. Online conference registrations have opened. Please visit the webpage for further details and links to register. Supervision of Students Please refer to Article 1 in the Teachers Provincial Agreement for more details. Teachers shall not be required to supervise students while the students are on lunch and noon hour break. Teachers shall not be required to supervise students prior to twenty minutes before their classes begin or subsequent to twenty minutes after their classes end. HRSB Pay Stubs Check Your Pay Stub! Members are reminded to check their online pay stubs to ensure they are being paid accurately and their deductions do not exceed the allotted amount. Any errors should be reported to payroll immediately. Total Care Dental Deadline Until October 15, 01, you can enroll in the NSTU Dental Plan by calling Johnson Inc. at or Coverage will take effect the first of the month following receipt of the application form or request for coverage.
