2 NEXT GENERATION PROGRAM - ANNUAL REPORT This annual report summarises the Next Generation Program for The Next Generation program introduces Year 8-10 students to the oil and gas industry in a fun, interactive and educational environment. Our aim is to provide information on career pathways, employment opportunities and culture within the industry. This is a community engagement initiative that has been facilitated by the Petroleum Club of WA since SCHOOL PARTICIPATION 2017 We had over 350 students from 8 schools participating in the 2017 program. Many of the schools have been involved with our program for many years and come back year after year. We would like to thank our participating schools, and more importantly our teachers, who assist in delivering the program. THE PROGRAM It s been a busy year for our schools and mentors, with 4 mentor visits completed throughout the year, plus the Student Expo Day held in September. During the mentor visits, students learnt about the impact the oil and gas industry has on society, and participated in interactive experiments. They also had the opportunity to speak with panel mentors who shared their experiences in the industry. Mentors then assisted students with their project deliverable - a presentation on their chosen career path. The panel of judges had a tough task of choosing the winning group, presented at the Student Expo Day in September. Congratulations to all our schools, the presentations were brilliant. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT This program would not be possible without the support of our mentors and sponsors. This year, the Next Generation program was fortunate enough to have significant support from a group of excellent industry representatives who provided mentorship and drive for the program. The mentors have provided their time on a voluntary basis, giving students the opportunity to hear first hand from industry professionals who share their skills and experiences with the students. This is one of the program highlights. The future is in our hands, and the Next Generation Committee look forward to building and developing the program with your support. 4 PROGRAM BREAKDOWN MENTOR VISIT #1 - INTRODUCTION TO THE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY The first mentor session provides students with an introduction to the oil and gas industry and the impact it has on society. They also took part in an SPE interactive experiment to further engage them in oil extraction. The students thoroughly enjoyed the hands on activity undertaking perforated well casing. MENTOR VISIT #2 - PANEL MENTOR PRESENTATION The second visit was a career panel, where mentors from various backgrounds and disciplines shared their career journey in the oil and gas industry. We had over 30 mentors take part in the panel session, giving students an insight into the following careers: Mechanical Engineer Risk & Insurance Manager Legal Internal Auditor Human Resources Refining Tech Advisor Business Development Environment Manager Petroleum Geology Drilling Engineer Electrical Trade OH& S Manager Chemical Engineer Offshore Quality Coordinator Process Engineer Team Leader - Vessels Graduate Installation Engineer Marketing Manager Subsea Technician Reservoir Engineering MENTOR VISIT #3 & 4 - PRESENTATIONS Mentor three and four are used to prepare the project deliverable. Students are asked to form groups of 4-5 and prepare a presentation on their chosen career path. Students will present their project presentations to their teacher and mentor, who will be looking for the following criteria to choose the winning group: Research Knowledge Presentation Flow Group Contribution Creativity The winning groups from each school were invited to attend the Student Expo Day in September, where their presentation will be judged to identify the overall winner of the Next Generation Program.

5 STUDENT EXPO DAY In September, a group of students from each school came together at Curtin University to share their research presentation and to celebrate their achievements. This aspect of the program is designed to encourage interaction between the schools and to continue to engage the students by providing further contact and interaction with industry representatives. PRESENTATIONS A successful team from each school gave their winning presentation on their chosen career path, presenting to our panel of judges. The presentations were very entertaining with game shows, interviews, role play movies and even a dance routine! The judges had a tough decision to make when choosing the program winner. Butler College came out on top, winning a HUET and Sea Survival kindly sponsored by IFAP. EXPO ACTIVITIES We had a fantastic set up of interactive displays for the students to participate in, giving them hands on experience and the chance to speak with University students and special industry representatives. 6 NEW OPPORTUNITIES In 2018 we hope to extend our reach and invite regional schools to take part in the Next Generation program. Our program mentors will visit regional schools to facilitate information sessions on career pathways and share their experience working in the industry. This will give us the opportunity to engage with a wider audience and give a greater number of schools across WA exposure to the oil and gas industry. HOW TO BE INVOLVED... The Next Generation program is the success it is because of the on-going support from our industry. We encourage you to contact our office if you have time and resources available to commit to the development of the program. This can be by way of sponsorship, mentoring, interactive displays or event volunteering to assist in the coordination of the program itself. BECOME A MENTOR Volunteer your time to visit the students and share your experiences of working in the oil and gas industry.
