About our growing Hispanic workforce?

Workers were classified as Hispanic if they are of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, of Central or South American descent, Spain, or of other Spanish culture or origin.

Continuing Hispanic Immigration 650, , , Foreign born 5 1 Hispanic vs European, Korean, Russian, African nations 57% birthplace is Mexico 27% Latin America Congressional Budget Office, U.S. Census Bureau

Rapid growth New workers About 2.3 million construction workers were born in foreign countries out of more than 8 million Highest number of foreign born outside of agriculture 84% of foreign born Hispanic workers report that Spanish is the language spoken at home Disproportionate risk Distinct challenges Center to Protect Workers Rights

Injury rates US Statistics show injury and fatality rates as much as 40 % higher for foreign born workers OSHA's statistics show that one fourth of the fatalities the agency investigates are related to language or cultural barriers.

Distinct Challenges Language barriers Cultural barriers Social norms values and customs Misunderstandings Training Literacy Trust (relationship) fear of reprisal

Language Barriers Unknown terms Lack of language skills to communicate Improper words make confusion To ols

Cultural Barriers Hispanic culture... (They) don t understand the system of unemployment, as an example, or any kind of disability income, so always need to be working

Cultural Barriers If you tell an American (Caucasian) worker that he could get sick and die if he doesn't wear a respirator, you will motivate him [to wear one]. With Hispanic workers (whose culture places a high importance on "family"), you need to say, If you fail to wear this respirator, you could get sick and be unable to provide for your family.' "

The most important reasons to protect yourself at work, isn t work at all!

Cultural Differences Attitude Hard workers don t complain To timid to ask questions To timid to make suggestions Pride in quality not necessarily piece work mentality Tolerant vs contentious Respectful vs challenging

Social Norms Norms shape immigrants relationships to their work, fellow workers, employers, unions, health and safety personnel and definitely government s roles. Different perceptions of hazards, [ injury and illness risk is inherent ] Religious vs. materialistic

Literacy Might not be literate enough to read even bi lingual or translated materials Can t read safety signs Can t read job posters on worker rights

Training Safety rules workers from countries where safety practices are not often taught nor emphasized Perhaps not regulated or enforced Not familiar with certain tools, procedures, equipment or machinery Use visual demonstrations for comprehension

Trust If they complain, they will be fired, because someone is right behind them in line for a job Won t report accidents or injuries for fear of reprisal or being let go If they file for workers compensation they will be asked for their paperwork, so workers don t report injuries

Understanding Hispanic behaviors is a tool in your belt, when it comes to communication. Language barriers Cultural barriers Social norms values and customs Misunderstandings Training Literacy Trust (relationship) Fear of reprisal Diversity within your workforce can be harnessed to your advantage, with a stronger safety process, and a more unified workforce to show for it. DO YOU KNOW WHY?

Safety goals can be an enormously unifying experience for employees, especially those who have little else in common in terms of their backgrounds and shared cultural ties, values and beliefs, and how these affect their work style.

If managers learn key construction and safety related phrases in Spanish you don t have to be fluent, just being able to say please put on your hard hat and safety glasses, can do wonders for morale and loyalty, and production!

Understanding Translations Cognates: physical fi si co electrical e lec tri co mechanical me ca ni co chemical qui mi co Spelling: h is silent j is like h in horse single to plural: el to los (male) la to las (female) tion is cion * excavacion construccion demolicion
