Apply to become a LandAid Charity Partner and for a grant of up to 75,000 Deadline extended to 5pm on Mon 2 Oct 2017 Application Guidelines 2017 updated 6 Sept LandAid's vision is a country where no young person is homeless. We aim to bring about lasting change by helping tackle the causes of youth homelessness and contributing to the provision of safe supported housing for those who need it most. We award grants to outstanding projects on the ground that work to give young people the shelter and support they need. Over the next 3 years LandAid intends to commit up to 2 million each year for building work to help front line organisations providing accommodation across the UK to renovate or create a total of 450 bed spaces for young people facing homelessness. LandAid is seeking to establish a UK wide network of Charity Partners who provide living accommodation for young people who are at risk of homelessness. These organisations will form the focus of our grant giving over the next two to three years. In this 2017 application round, LandAid is inviting organisations to apply to become Charity Partners. The application involves describing your current work and outlining one or more accommodation projects you are likely to need grant funding for over the next two years. LandAid is also inviting organisations to apply now for grant funding of up to 75,000 for building work for a specific accommodation project. Funding will be available in batches over the next four to twelve months. Applicants who are not yet ready to apply for funding for a specific project can still apply to become a Charity Partner. If successful, they will be pre-qualified to be invited to apply for grant funding in We will allocate funding for building work under two grant strands: Renovation: existing properties in need of refurbishment which will provide accommodation, support, and in some cases training, for young people who have been or are at risk of becoming homeless. This could be improvements for current run-down accommodation premises, or a building you plan to purchase or lease that needs to be refurbished and converted into fit for purpose accommodation for young people. Any existing building is eligible, including, but not exclusively, long-term empty properties (empty for over six months). For renovations, we require that the applicant either owns or will be able to secure a minimum 8- year lease on the property (from the date building work is completed and young people start living there). 1
New buildings: new safe, secure and affordable accommodation for young people who are experiencing homelessness. Designed and built using traditional methods on site or using modular or precision construction off site in factories. For new buildings, we require that the applicant either owns or leases the site and buildings, we would discuss ownership and lease arrangements on a case by case basis. In our Charity Partner assessments, we will consider the current work of the organisation in providing accommodation and support to vulnerable young people, and the ability to monitor and provide evidence of the impact of this work. We are interested to hear about future plans to renovate or build living accommodation over the next two years. We aim to have several Charity Partners located in each UK nation and region. In our project funding assessments, we will be looking at the proposal for renovated or new accommodation for young people, and demonstration that the project is needed and financially viable (the building work itself and the accommodation project when young people are living there). We will look at the building work costs, we are seeking Value for Money per bed space. We will consider renovations that cost up to 15,000 per bed space, where that cost covers the bed space and a related proportion of communal areas. We will consider costs for new buildings on a case by case basis. We are inviting applications for Charity Partners across the UK, and for grant funding of up to a maximum of 75,000 for building work. We are also inviting applications for free professional property advice, for the projects applied for and/or for other premises and property issues. The deadline for applications has been extended to 5pm on Monday 2 October We look forward to receiving your application. Specifics of this funding round Who can apply? UK organisations with charitable objectives, including: UK registered charities UK registered societies, community benefit societies, pre-commencement societies, industrial and provident societies UK registered Community Interest Companies Limited by Guarantee We will NOT be funding statutory organisations, churches or individuals. If your organisation is eligible and you have previously applied to LandAid, whether you were successful or not, you are welcome to apply to this round. What costs will be funded? Capital costs towards building work for renovations and new buildings to provide living accommodation. 2
What costs will NOT be funded? We will NOT consider funding towards: The purchase of property Rent Projects which include properties being leased from the owner for less than eight years (from the date when the building work is completed and young people start to live in the property). Salary costs Essential We are looking for applications from: Organisations that provide safe welcoming bed spaces for young people within the age range 16 to 25 years old in housing need, and make them available at a rent they can afford. Organisations that can ensure that the funded project is exclusively for young people within the age range 16 to 25 years old who are at risk of homelessness, and that support is provided to enable them to move forward positively with their lives. Organisations that undertake building work, but do not manage and support young people in living accommodation, are invited to form a partnership with a local accommodation provider, who would be the applicant for this round. Building work can be undertaken by the applicant organisation themselves, a not for profit partner or a construction company. If already decided, please include any partner organisation names in the application. Areas of interest We are also interested in building work which provides one or more of the following: On-site construction training and/or apprenticeships for unemployed young people On-site volunteering opportunities for local unemployed people Specifications in the building work to benefit future tenants. E.g. the renovations involve energy conservation and efficiency measures, and also building work to minimise long term maintenance issues in older properties (e.g. condensation). Size of grant Applicants can apply for grants up to 75,000 to part fund or fully fund building work. LandAid expects to award grants of average 50,000, these grants will be awarded in batches from December 2017 to December The exact number and amount of grants we award depends on the applications we receive and the funds we raise. LandAid will consider building projects due to start on site within the next two years. 3
LandAid is happy to receive applications where we will part fund a project with other funders as well as being the sole funder. In these circumstances, LandAid will normally require that all other funding is secured before paying the first instalment of the grant. In addition As LandAid aims to make a positive impact in the towns and cities where its supporters are based; we are particularly looking for applications from organisations based in the UK s major towns and cities. LandAid seeks to fund organisations who will actively engage with LandAid and its supporters. LandAid seeks to offer free professional property advice to the building project applied for, and/or for other premises issues an organisation may have. Application process The application process has the following stages: 1. online application form; 2. long listed organisations contacted by the LandAid Grants Team involving telephone conversations and/or a visit - an opportunity to discuss the application and find out more about your organisation; 3. applicants are informed if they have been approved as a LandAid Charity Partner; 4. project applications are short listed and invited to provide any updates and additional information in advance of the Grants Team presenting the information at one of the quarterly Grants Committee meetings. 5. after the relevant Grants Committee meeting, applicants are informed whether their project funding has been approved or not. How to apply The save and return link for the on-line application form is: You will be asked to register, the log in function enables you to save and return to the form at your convenience before final submission of the application. The form is hosted on a third-party form website and usernames and passwords are managed by them, so please remember your username and password. You can submit any time up until the deadline. The deadline for applications has been extended to 5pm on Monday 2 October
When you submit the form a copy of your application will be sent to you by . For your reference only, the second link below will take you to a printable non-editable version of the application form, so you can read and review all the questions in advance of filling in and completing the online form: As you will see on the printable version of the form, Sections 1,2,4,5,6 are for all applicants. Section 3 Request for Funding for a Project is for organisations who are ready now to apply for funding. What happens next? Charity Partner Applications: If your Charity Partner application is longlisted and is being considered, you will be contacted by telephone and/or visited by the LandAid Grants Team in the period October to December We aim to let applicants know by the end of December 2017 whether their Charity Partner application has been successful or not. Charity Partner Applications with accompanying Requests for Funding for a Project: If your Charity Partner application is longlisted and is being considered, you will be contacted by telephone and/or visited by the LandAid Grants Team in the period October to December 2017 (same as above). If your project funding application is longlisted, you will be contacted in the period October 2017 to December Following this contact, projects will be shortlisted. These projects will be allocated to one of the upcoming quarterly Grants Committee meetings. In advance of the allocated Grants Committee meeting, applicants will be contacted to confirm project details and requested to submit updates and any additional supporting documents. Organisations will find out if their project applications are successful, unsuccessful or still under consideration by the end of March LandAid will make grant awards in batches, when there are funds available in the LandAid bank account, and after each of the scheduled quarterly Grants Committee meetings. We expect to make a first batch of grant awards in December 2017, and further batches in March 2018, July 2018, October 2018 and December We know that filling in the application form takes time and resources. Please understand that your application may be turned down even if it is valuable and interesting, unfortunately our funding and the number of organisations we can support and engage with is limited. 5
What kind of a funder is LandAid? LandAid Charitable Trust is a fundraising charity and a grant-making organisation. We raise money from over 100 businesses working in the UK property development sector. We pool these funds and award grants towards organisations and projects across the UK that work to give young people the shelter and support they need. LandAid is committed to making a difference to youth homelessness and is careful to ensure the projects we support are cost-effective, located in areas of need and give young people the best opportunities and support available. Our Grants Team is supported by a Grants Committee, consisting of senior property industry members and trustees who meet four times a year to allocate funding to projects. We aim to build open and straightforward relationships with the organisations we support. We try to offer high levels of engagement when this is helpful and appropriate. We offer free professional property advice, for grant funded building projects, and also for other building projects or premises issues: free property advice. For general information on LandAid and on projects we have previously funded, please visit our website: Help or queries If you have any queries about the application process, please contact the LandAid Grants Team on grants@landaid.org or
