1 s - Open Grant Opportunities Sponsor Name of Program Brief Description Opportunity ID American Sleep Medicine 9 /18/ The PAEA Research Council 9 /20/ Bright Focus 10/13/ Junior Investigator Focused Projects Award Faculty-Generated Research Grants Program Alzheimer's Disease Research Program These investigator-initiated awards are intended to support projects across a wide variety of topics and research questions relevant to sleep medicine that align with the mission of the ASMF. Focused Projects proposals can involve patient outcomes, quality metrics or other aspects of health services research but are not limited to these topics. Research projects should address one or more scientific questions related to sleep and/or sleep disorders. These projects should address important unanswered questions related to sleep and sleep health. These proposals must include specific research aims and testable hypotheses, clearly delineated research methods, a data analysis plan, and identify clear products as a result of this funding such as manuscripts, research abstracts or applications for additional funding subsequent to this award. Given the size and scope of the Focused Projects award mechanism, both small self-contained research projects and pilot projects, in preparation for a larger study, are appropriate. The overall goals of the PAEA Faculty Generated Research Grants Program are to promote quality scholarship regarding PA education and the PA field, increase research capacity and collaboration across institutions, and encourage the development and training of emerging PA education researchers. To accomplish these goals, PAEA will provide a substantial investment of up to $50,000 for a study that meaningfully expands the existing body of knowledge on PA education and/or the PA profession. Funding will be prioritized for projects that propose rigorous, sophisticated methods and analyses to address novel research questions consistent with the two major goals and/or five components of the PAEA Strategic Plan. The standard award provides significant funding for researchers who have already generated some amount of preliminary data, but are often required to demonstrate additional, significant progress before they can apply to governmental or industrial funding agencies. Award Amount: $300,000 Duration: 3 years Tuesday, August 22, 2017 Page 1 of 11

5 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine 1 /1 /2018 AOSSM/Sanofi Osteoarthritis Grant Program American Physiological Society 1 /12/2018 Barbara A. Horwitz and John M. Horowitz Outstanding Undergraduate Abstract Awards AOSSM will award a single grant of $50,000 for a clinical research study or lab/basic project related to early osteoarthritis and/or prevention of OA progression. Proposed studies need not relate specifically to sports injuries and should also have broad applicability to OA in the general population. Research priorities include but are not limited to: Current knowledge of early disease development is limited. Additional mechanistic studies are needed to characterize early events in osteoarthritis and how these might be affected by joint injury. An increased understanding of disease initiation and the factors that drive disease could improve therapy development and selection. Identification of events that initiate and propagate disease is needed to achieve this goal. Identification of specific acute injury mechanisms that may contribute to increased likelihood of disease progression, providing potential interventional targets. Determination and optimization of treatment time courses to determine the validity of a mono or multi-therapeutic approach. Also it would be beneficial to determine the preferred time for intervention and identify therapeutic agents/procedures optimized for each phase and stage of injury or disease. Applicants must be a member of AOSSM. The Barbara A. Horwitz and John M. Horowitz Outstanding Undergraduate Abstract Awards provide $100 and a 2-year complimentary undergraduate student membership with The American Physiological Society to undergraduate students who are presenting their research at the Experimental Biology meeting. To be considered for the awards, the candidate must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at the time of the application, be the first author on a submitted abstract for the EB meeting, and be working with an APS member. Selection of awardees is based on the abstract, letter of application, and letter of support from the research host.
