Fab Lab Vs. Makerspace Digital fabrication Cad/Cam Traditional Digital Transform your studio into a makerspace by adding a fab lab
What do I start with? Goals/outcomes Community & Campus support Funding strategy Space/ Infrastructure Staff Tools & Equipment Website & Database PR and Marketing
What do you want to build? Fab Lab? Makerspace? Partnership with entrepreneurs like Hacker Lab or Tech Shop? Something New? What you choose will determine what you need in the following slides.
Who s going to build it? Faculty? Staff? Facilities coordinator? Combination of all three? Outside company like Makology Questions to ask when deciding. Who is your faculty champion? What department can easily adapt or has interest? Who will advise you on needs for space and equipment?
Where Should we put it? Art Studios Library Engineering CTE Factors for location Where is your Faculty Champion located? What kind of ventilation does the space have? How much power can the space supply? Can you make a LOT of noise? Can you get dirty Can you get large materials in and out of space? Can you divide space into a clean room and a dirty room?
Curriculum Learning Outcomes Outcomes should cover entire student body but target focus group. Try not to overlap with existing CAD/CAM curriculum at your college. Feed into existing programs and they will feed into you Transferability State standards will determine. Look to universities for existing programs. Versatility Cover topics such as operation of equipment, safety, maintenance, utilization, integration into existing curriculum. Growth and Expansion Keep you curriculum open ended and somewhat vague so that it can be easily adapted to the ever changing technology your teaching.
Professional Development Train all interested Faculty Let them have access in order to adapt to their individual curriculum Training should include 1. Operation of equipment 2. Maintenance 3. How it applies to different areas 4. Departmental collaboration 5. Safety

They can help you connect with other departments with a similar prospectus and help network Community 1. Teach weekend workshops 2. Open lab memberships and training for community outside student body. 3. Start a Digital Fabrication club with a product development and marketing component. 4. Create an incubator in the digital fabrication sector. 5. E-commerce website to promote student success.
