While we are proud of the fact that we donated nearly $14 million in cash contributions to charities and civic organizations in 2011, we are even more gratified by the positive impact we make on people s lives through our work to provide educational opportunities, build inclusive communities and promote cultural outreach and understanding. frederick h. waddell chairman and chief executive officer northern trust corporation OUR MISSION: REACHING OUT TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES As part of Northern Trust s broad philanthropic vision, The Northern Trust Charitable Trust was established in September 1966 to support not-for-profit organizations in Cook County, Illinois. The Trust s primary focus is to reach out to people in the Chicago area who are in need or face obstacles that impede their full participation in society. At Northern Trust we are happy to continue a long-standing tradition of sharing the fruits of our success by reaching out to our neighbors and enriching the communities we share. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT Since our inception, Northern Trust has aligned our efforts with our guiding principles of service, expertise and integrity. We are dedicated not only to meeting the needs of our clients and shareholders, but giving back to the communities we serve. Volunteerism. Philanthropy. Sound business practices and ethics. And a conservationminded approach to protecting the environment. All of these comprise our corporate social responsibility. All are integral to our culture of caring, now and in the future. A commitment to a culture of caring means we view our clients as partners. And it means that by turning money into good works, we extend a helping hand to those who can t care for themselves. We proudly advocate corporate citizenship, philanthropy and support for the diverse communities and environments in which we operate. Since 1966, the Northern Trust Charitable Trust has provided grants to organizations in Chicago neighborhoods. Leading up to its 50th anniversary in 2016, the Charitable Trust will highlight one notable organization each year, starting this year. Our 2011 profile is Erie Neighborhood House, highlighted at right.

3 2011 GRANTEE PROFILE: ERIE NEIGHBORHOOD HOUSE Founded in 1870, Erie Neighborhood House s mission is to promote a just and inclusive society by strengthening low-income families, primarily Latino, through skill building, access to critical resources, advocacy and collaborative action. In Chicago s West Town, Humboldt Park and Little Village communities, Erie s education programs annually help 4,000 participants create better lives for themselves and their families while strengthening community action and civic engagement. The TEAM program and Northern Trust The relationship between Erie and Northern Trust began in 1984 when then-senior vice president of community affairs, Marje Lundy, observed that the new tutoring program at Wells Community Academy High School needed more robust resources from the corporate and not-for-profit communities. Marie and Northern Trust led the corporate commitment and looked to Erie to partner on the not-for-profit side. This partnership saw immediate success. Northern Trust volunteers became role models to high school students and served as tutors and mentors. Through the TEAM (Tutoring to Educate on Aims and Motivation) program, students who were averaging Ds later averaged Bs. Students visited college campuses for the first time and now had someone who could give them direction by assisting with personal essays for college applications and looking for financial aid. Together, Erie and Northern Trust witnessed students graduating high school on time and an increase in enrolling in colleges and universities. TEAM program achievements For more than two decades, TEAM served high school students grades nine through 12. In 1984, when the program began, TEAM served six students. By 2006, TEAM served an average of 70 students with 34 Northern Trust employees among the 61 total mentors. In 2008, TEAM expanded to include serving eighth graders. Today, TEAM annually serves more than 100 students seventh through 12th grade. Anecdotally, students have reported that they believe they would not have been able to go to college without having their adult mentors as role models. As many of the teens are underprivileged, second-generation immigrant Latino youth, they have no family members who have gone to college before them. They have few people to help show them the way. This is where our volunteer mentors and Erie step in. The program has evolved tremendously since its modest beginnings, while still keeping mentoring and tutoring at the heart of the program. northerntrust.com Northern Trust Charitable Trust 2011 Annual Report 3 of 12

FOCUS OF THE NORTHERN TRUST CHARITABLE TRUST The Northern Trust Charitable Trust supports organizations that serve Chicago s Humboldt Park, Logan Square, West Town, Loop, Englewood, Chatham and Washington Park communities. Grants are usually confined to programs and agencies that focus on advancing the well-being of disadvantaged women and children and people with disabilities in one of four core areas. Health, basic human needs and community development programs provide invaluable support to people who face obstacles that impede their full participation in society. 5 Impacting Education Education is a cornerstone to success. The Northern Trust Charitable Trust is committed to supporting organizations that bring innovative, comprehensive and exemplary programs to Chicago s public school students. We believe that by augmenting the priorities and goals of Chicago Public Schools, we are giving the students in our focus neighborhoods additional tools to help strengthen their academic achievement and leadership development. The Northern Trust Charitable Trust gives priority to organizations that: Improve student achievement through innovative programming; Develop the talent of teachers and principals; and Prepare students to compete globally. Sharing the Arts Arts and culture programs play a key role in the development of vibrant and healthy communities. By supporting organizations that bring opportunities to our focus communities, the Northern Trust Charitable Trust is helping to create forums for social interaction to celebrate diversity and heritage. The Northern Trust Charitable Trust supports Chicago-area arts and cultural organizations that: Open access to the city s cultural life and Integrate the arts into education and other community outreach initiatives. General Guidelines The Northern Trust Charitable Trust grants average $15,000 per year-long cycle. Contributions will support program, general operating, capital or endowment priorities. Grants from the Northern Trust Charitable Trust may be awarded for three consecutive years, with one year off before an organization is eligible to apply again. General operating and program grants are not renewed automatically; capital or endowment grants can be multi-year commitments. meeting The Northern Trust Charitable Trust contribution requirements Organization requests must meet specific requirements to be considered for contributions. After receiving an invitation to apply for a grant, please follow the checklist below to complete the application process. Current grant recipients that have been funded in the last 12 months and are seeking renewed support do not need to submit a letter of inquiry, but must complete the application process. 7 global 16% Arts and Culture 18% Education 25% Education 7% Other chicago area 15% Arts and Culture 59% Social Welfare 60% Social Welfare MAKING A DIFFERENCE Northern Trust s commitment to a strong corporate philanthropy program continued in 2011 with nearly $14 million in contributions. These contributions supported social welfare, education and arts and culture programs around the globe in every city where Northern Trust has a presence. Most of the programs supported serve women, children and persons with disabilities. In 2011, Northern Trust continued to support our headquarters city of Chicago. Our support of United Way chapters around the country continued in 2011 with $3.1 million contributed to the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago. Of that total amount, Northern Trust s employees contributed $2 million. The Charitable Trust made an additional $1.45 million in grants to local social welfare organizations that provide critical services to low- and moderate-income families striving to build better lives. Across all areas of giving from the Charitable Trust, 30% was directed to capital, endowment and other special projects around the city. DEADLINES Applications, including all material specified in the checklist, must be received in Northern Trust s Community Affairs office before 5:00 pm on the deadline date.
