2 SECTION 1: BOC Trainee Information What is the BOC Certification Training Program? BOC is a competency-based training and certification program for building operators offering improved job skills in commercial energy auditing including topics such as facility electrical, HVAC and lighting systems, indoor air quality, environmental health and safety, and energy conservation. The BOC training program in energy auditing is licensed by the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council in Seattle, Washington. Eligibility Individuals employed by or seeking employment with organizations that provide energy management services to commercial businesses Independent contractors and entrepreneurs who provide or seek to provide energy management services to commercial businesses. Independent contractors and entrepreneurs looking to expand their skills and knowledge base of energy management. Have not yet participated in a free training certification program through SLIM Program Participant Benefits Free of charge due to grant to support workforce development Preparation for BOC Level 1 Certification Highly personalized attention to the unique training needs of each participant Excellent professional development opportunity and development of skills in current energy management best practices BOC Certification Training Program Hours Total Program Hours: 80 A six month training schedule with classes one day per month from 8:00am 5:00pm (Jan 15, Feb 12-13, Apr 9, May 7, Jun 4, Jul 16) Certificate of Completion Upon successful completion of all of the BOC components, participants will then be recognized and awarded a certificate of completion by the University of Hawaii-Maui College for their successful completion of the BOC and will be eligible for the Building Operator Level 1 credential issued from Northwest Energy Efficiency Institute. 2

3 BOC Training Program Objectives: To expose BOC participants to current best practices in energy management To prepare BOC participants for the NEEC BOC Level I credential Upon completion of this training program, participants will be able to: o Conduct basic energy audits for commercial business customers o Conduct basic weatherization inspections for commercial businesses o Understand the basics of building science, including Heat transfer concepts Building performance testing Air distribution leakage Calculation of gross and net areas Energy terminology Combustion appliance concerns Envelope leakage, thermal bypass, thermal bridging, envelope insulation, Presence/absence of insulation Quality of insulation Recommended levels of insulation by climate zone HVAC determine equipment efficiencies from model numbers or default tables Basics of energy units Measuring building dimensions Identify and document energy survey Understand basics of specifications Determine window and door efficiency Determine building orientation and shading characteristics Define thermal boundaries How to Apply?
