ABOUT MAKE-A-WISH SOUTHERN NEVADA The mission of Make-A-Wish is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Founded in 1996, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada has granted more than 1,700 wishes. The Southern Nevada chapter serves children who reside in Clark, Lincoln, Nye and Esmeralda counties. In Fiscal Year 2016, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada granted over 100 wishes and assisted in over 40 wishes for childen from other chapters. The most popular wish category was I Wish to Go... The average cost of a wish in the Southern Nevada region is $10,000. 7 Connie, 13 leukemia I wish to be a Las Vegas VIP Thank you for helping to share the power of a wish! Like many thirteen-year-olds, Connie can often be found with her friends at the movies, playing on her ipad or at the mall shopping. While this sounds typical of most teenagers, Connie s life has been disrupted by an acute lymphoid leukemia diagnosis, and she is now forced to undergo weekly rounds of aggressive chemotherapy to treat her illness. She watched from a distance as her friends lives seemed to go on as usual, while she dealt with the devastating blow of a lifethreatening illness. It was during this dark time Connie was first introduced to volunteers from Make-A-Wish, and she first felt this might be the light at the end of her tunnel. When speaking with her new friends, she shared with them her favorite things, including highend fashion, fancy restaurants, and all the glitz and glamour the Las Vegas strip had to offer. As she shared these thoughts with her Wish Granters, Connie crafted a perfect wish come true to incorporate all of her favorite things-connie wished to be a Las Vegas VIP! Not long after, a stretch limo whisked Connie and her family off to The Venetian, and the start of their luxurious staycation was officially underway. For an entire weekend, thoughts of chemo never entered her mind. Connie stayed in the most amazing hotel room she d ever seen, she spent time at the spa getting her makeup and nails done, and was even treated to special show tickets and fancy restaurant meals. When all was said and done, Connie s mother remarked she hadn t seen Connie smile this much in a very long time.
