A Message From Your Governor Hello I-I Key Clubbers, I hope you all are adjusting well to school, and getting excited for another great year of service once again! I know that school can be difficult and stressful, but Key Club is a great way to take your mind off of that stress, have fun, and help the world! One way we can make a big impact is through Key Club Internationals Service Partners. Service Partners are great organizations that Key Club has partnered up with in order to spread the word about their cause and increase their impact through Key Clubbers. Key Club International has 4 Service Partners, UNICEF, Children's Miracle Network, March of Dimes, and The Thirst Project (check out page 18 for more info). You and your club can help these projects in so many ways. Have a bake sale, and donate money to The Thirst Project. Make get well cards for the kids that are patients of Children's Miracle Network hospitals. Participate in the March of Dimes walk in your local area. At your next meeting talk about EMLININATE through UNICEF, and inspire others to go out and help EMLINATE Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus from the earth. Together, we can make an outstanding impact. We already have. 3

You and your club can also do such great things outside of Key Clubs Service partners. Raking leaves for the community on a Saturday morning is such a great way to put a smile on someone's face, but also get the word out about your Key Club. Collect canned goods or nonperishable food items at school, and donate them to a local food pantry. Your Key Club could have a car wash and raise money for the families affected by the extreme flooding in Louisiana. Your Key Club and your Kiwanis club could sponsor a child in a under developed country go to school for a year. Projects, big or small can have such an incredible impact on people in your community, in the United States, and people half way across the world. The Illinois and Eastern Iowa District of Key Club International is as strong as it has ever been, and it continues to grow. That is all because of the amazing service projects every club does. With the school year just starting to pick up speed, it is important that our service to our communities and to the world is also picking up speed. If your club finds itself at a lack of funds for a project or event you guys are planning please give the Youth Opportunities Grant Fund a try. This is an amazing opportunity through Key Club International, were clubs can apply for 100 to 2,000 dollars to help with a project. The deadline to have the applications received is October 15th. So make sure you and your clubs get the ball rolling if you think the Youth Opportunities Grant is right for you. It is important to remember that if your clubs applies for the grant, you will get an no later than January 1 with notification on if your club has received this grant. Your club can apply on the Key Club International Website under Apply for a YOF Grant. If you ever need any help with planning service projects, or getting inspiration for new ones. I and your Lieutenant Governor are great resources for that. Thank you so much for everything you have done, and everything you will do! Have a great time serving! Yours in Service and Always in Friendship, Abby Mast District Governor 4

Secretary s Update Hello I-I District! It's me, your district secretary Oviya. I have a couple of things to talk about for this month's update. Remember that the Rosters Turned in On Time award deadline is on September 17th. That means we only have about 17 days for almost 30 clubs to turn in their rosters. The form is not too hard to fill out and it should only take about 5 minutes to fill out. You can find it under forms on the iikeyclub.org website. The rosters are essential for the board to contact members like you! We want to be able to personally contact you for our Fall Leadership Rallies and District Convention and Leadership Conference in March! If you have any questions about filling in the roster form, don't be afraid to contact your division lieutenant governor or me at secretary@iikeyclub.org! Finally, we have about 26% of rosters turned in. We are close to the 40% district goal, so if you have not already submitted your club officer roster please do so ASAP! As always, have a great school year Key Clubbers! You're doing great! Yours in Service, Oviya Sougoumarane I-I District Secretary 5

Treasurer s Update Hey Key Clubbers! As your District Treasurer, I would like to remind you of a few things coming up these next months. The first date is October 1st. That is when your club can start turning in their dues to International. The next date is all of October. October is when your club can start raising money for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. (If you would like information about Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, please check out the August Iolian ). The third date is October 15th. That is when your club s submissions for the Youth Opportunities Fund should be turned in. The fourth date is November 1st. If your club s dues have been submitted before November 1st, your club has earned the Early Birds Award! The Early Birds Award is an award given to clubs who have submitted their dues a month before the dues deadline. The fifth date is December 1st. December 1st is the final deadline for your club s dues. If your clubs has not turned their dues in by this date, it is considered a delinquent club. Again, is there is anything I can do to help your clubs in any way, don t be afraid to me at treasurer.iikc@gmail.org. I hope to see you all at your Fall Leadership Rallies! Yours in Service, Anthony Palazzolo District Treasurer 6

SPASTIC PARALYSIS RESEARCH FOUNDATION What is it? This is a symptom of various diseases or medical conditions of the central nervous system that cause stiff or rigid muscles that interfere with walking, movement, or speech, known as spasticity. Research has included diseases such as brain tumors, spina bifida, Alzheimer, Fragile x syndrome, stroke rehabilitation, etc. Let s learn more about Spina Bifida: Spina Bifida is a birth defect in which a developing baby's spinal cord fails to develop properly. This often results in damage to the spinal cord and nerves and often can lead to physical and mental disabilities. There is currently no cure, although there are ways to reduce risks. Researchers to know: Dr. David G. McLone is a Professor and the Head of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Children's Memorial Hospital affiliated with Northwestern University in Chicago. His research focuses on the cause and improved methods of treatment for spina bifida, hydrocephalus and myelomeningocele. Why is this important? Spastics raises money for not just one, but for many causes. With everyone s help, we can raise money to help researches such as Dr. David G. McLone expand our knowledge and treatment for these diseases to help find cures and limit the effects of the diseases. How can you help? Local fundraisers are a great way to help raise money for this cause. Spreading awareness and knowledge of the disease through organizing service projects and attending key club events for Spastics are great ways to get involved. Check out our websites for events and ways to help donate for the cause 13

Youth Opportunities Fund Want to make a difference with a service project but need more funds to complete it? Apply to the Youth Opportunities Fund! The Youth Opportunities fund (YOF) is an endowed fund for Key Club International that is held within the Kiwanis International Foundation and uses earned interest to help Key Clubs and Key Club members do service to the world by offering grants for service opportunities. From the Key Club International Website--- The basics you need to know: YOF grants are given only to Key Clubs and/or club members. There is only one funding cycle for the Youth Opportunities Fund. The application must be received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST. Clubs may request funding assistance ranging anywhere from US$100 to US$2,000. The committee typically funds those clubs who are asking for a portion of the total cost of the project, and clubs who are working with other organizations to fund and complete the project. There is one funding cycle for YOF grants per year. Applications received by October 15 at 11:59 PM EST are reviewed by the Key Club International YOF committee at their November meeting. Funding notifications are mailed no later than January first each year. Applicants must use the current YOF grant application. Previous years' applications will not be accepted. Guidelines for filing the application are also listed in the Key Club Guidebook under Board Policies 16

At My First DCLC Abby Mast, Belleville West High School At my first District Convention and Leadership Conference (DCLC), it wasn't even called DCLC! Way, way back in 2014 it was called District Convention, or just D-Con. I had the time of my life, I was hypnotized on Friday night, I met the person who is still my best friend to this day, and I got to experience the club that I fell so in love with just months before on a much bigger scale. District Convention (and Leadership Conference) can be an intimating thing; there are hundreds upon hundreds of people, busy confusing hotels, and there are always so many workshops and forums to choose from. Even so, District Convention 2014 was amazing, I met Miss Illinois 2014 (she still hasn t called me back so I suppose that we can't be best friends like I had once hoped). It was also a bit unconventional due to a very harsh weather conditions. The severe snowstorm of that year crowded the schedule, dances were cancelled, and prepared forums were cut, and the panic was evident. Also at my first DCLC, I learned about the position I am today, governor, and I saw Will Kelley, governor, resign, and Graham Novak, the governor be installed. My freshman self would have never thought that in just a few short years that I would be governor- that I would be among some of the most amazing and distinguished leaders in our great district. But here I am. I am one hundred percent sure that I would not be in my position I am today, I would not have the friends I have today, and I would definitely not be the person I am today if it wasn t for that cold, panicked, and snowy weekend in March (Yes, I know, a snow storm in March is very unlikely but, it happened). Going to that District Convention and Leadership Conference sparked something inside of me, it made me understand that Key Club is more than selling peanuts; it is a world famous service organization that has transformed more lives than we could ever hope to know. 19

What is At My First DCLC? At My First DCLC is a new section of the Iolian that includes articles submitted by members of the I-I District who have attended District Convention and Leadership Conference. I started this section of the Iolian to encourage members who have not attended convention before to attend and educate them on the positive life changing experiences that it can provide for them. Submission Criteria: Submitter must have attended at least one DCLC Send in a picture from first DCLC and most recent DCLC (if there is only one only one picture is needed) Include the name of your home club in your signature Proper Grammar & Punctuation Submissions can include but are not limited to: o What was learned and how it was used o Experiences with meeting people o Funny/Happy/Good memories o Location, Theme, and Dates of your first DCLC o If applicable, DCLC experiences that have to do with being on the District Board o Forums that helped you or had an impact on you 20

Club Spotlight Time to honor clubs in our District that have been doing tremendous work in their homes, schools, and communities! Want to know how to get your club in the spotlight? an article and pictures of a service project that club has done to editor@iikeyclub.org or use the template in We d love to see! Streator Township High School Key Clubbers recently helped out at their school s freshman orientation to help out their fellow students and aid the staff of the school during this exciting and hectic time of the year. The new students were sent on a scavenger hunt to help them get acquainted with the building, meet teachers, and learn where their classes are. Key Clubbers handed out pencils and papers to the students and helped to guide them in the right direction. After the scavenger hunt, Key Clubbers helped the new freshmen around the school while they went to their first classes as high schoolers. Division 24- Streator Township High School
