With so many exciting opportunities available for 4-H Members during the summer months, we just had to publish them in this special Camp Edition of the Informer. I strongly encourage 4-H members to take advantage of 4-H Camps, Workshops, and Trips. 4-H Camps are available for all ages of 4-H Members, including Mini 4-H members. There are even opportunities available for approved adult 4-H volunteers. Camps cover a variety of topics/interests ranging from science, money management, environmental, band/chorus, leadership and MUCH MORE! Why are camps a great opportunity? Experience in-depth "action learning" in specific interest areas Learn about educational opportunities and college life (for camps held at Purdue) Develop leadership abilities and stimulate individual growth Learn new ideas and techniques Enjoy participating in leisure activities and meeting new people Participate in a community service activity Nervous about attending camp? Camps for younger members have Wabash County 4-H members as counselors 4-H Educators are on site at all camps Staff at many camps include myself, Jessi, or other Wabash County volunteers With camp enrollment deadlines quickly approaching, I strongly encourage interested 4-H members to submit necessary information to the Extension Office quickly. Timely registration is extremely important as some camps and classes are only available to a limited number of participants. In such cases, spots will be filled on a first come, first serve basis. I look forward to seeing you at camp this summer! How much does it cost to attend camps and workshops outlined in this Informer? The Wabash County 4-H Council would like to give you the chance to attend 4-H camps and workshops for as little as $0...that s right, FREE. How can this be possible? This offer is made possible thanks to generous Ribbons of Support donations from Wabash County Farm Bureau Inc. and other donors. Read on page 6 of this Informer to learn what you need to do to take advantage of this incredible offer. 1

2 Band: Saturday, June 23 Monday, June 25 (Price before Scholarship = $180) Youth will improve instrumental skills as they prepare for a concert band performance during 4-H Round-up Must apply & be selected. Selections are made by the State 4-H Band Director & Coordinator. Chorus: Saturday, June 23 Tuesday, June 26 (Price before scholarship = $ Hers will be responsible for $100 total. $50 of that may be reimbursed by following instructions on page 6 of this Informer.) Youth will improve vocal and choreography skills as they prepare for a show choir performance during 4-H Round-up. State 4-H chorus members perform at the Indiana State Fair on 4-H Day. Must apply & be selected. Selections are made by the State 4-H Chorus Director & Coordinator. Complete the application by logging in to your 4-H Online profile and registering for an event. Be sure to get your band/choir director to complete the recommendation form found at Once at the site, select Get Involved then go to Camps & Workshops Deadline to register is April 1. Once registered, submit your check made payable to Wabash County 4-H Council to the Extension Office. (Note: while the application states an April 15 deadline, the application and money must be received by April 1 in order for the 4-H Council to submit the full payment amount by the April 15 deadline.) Indiana 4-H Leadership Summit Event Replaces: IN 4-H Congress, Science Volunteer Training, & State Fair Volunteer Day Saturday, November the East Event Centre, in Carmel Indiana Special Evening Session will be held November 9 more info to come. 4-H Members in Grades 8-12 AND Approved 4-H Volunteers Event Description: 1. Break-out sessions on topics such as Positive Youth Development, 4-H Science, Healthy Living, 4-H Citizenship, Animal & Environmental Science, 4-H Marketing, Workforce Preparation, 4HOnline Record Book & Fair Entry, Creating a Successful 4-H Cub, Navigating Difficult Conversations. 2. Adult & Youth 4-H Volunteer recognition. 4-H Volunteer Awards of Excellence will be given. Nominate Volunteers at 3. General session on inclusivity and belonging 4. Citizenship Washington Focus Saturday, June 30 Saturday, July 7 4-Hers Must be at least 15 years of age and in 9th grade or higher by June 15 Event Description: Experience the nation s capital and learn more about the meaning of citizenship. Listening, learning, sharing, receiving, caring, and touring combine to provide a deeper respect and understanding of our American heritage and the principles, processes and structures of U.S. government. The trip will be made on Purdue charter bus. Acquire increased motivation and skills to deal with contemporary social issues, government affairs, and related projects. Register by May 1. 4-H Members in Grades 7 9 What is 4-H Round-Up? An educational experience designed for middle school aged teens. Youth learn about their own uniqueness, career options, and being positive role models in an enjoyable, fun manner. Youth will meet peers from all over the state, experience life on a Big 10 University campus, socialize at a dance or movie and be exposed to college life in an organized group event. Complete the health and behavior expectation form included in this Informer. Cost before scholarship = $180 Submit check made payable to Wabash County 4-H Council to the Extension Office. Payment and all required forms must be submitted to the Extension Office by May 1. Participants and a parent/guardian must attend a meeting with Angela prior to 4-H Round-Up. National 4-H Congress November Atlanta Georgia 4-H Members in Grades 9-12 National 4-H Congress provides a life-changing experience for youth to meet 4-Hers from across America, as they participate in educational workshops focusing on diversity, cultural experiences, leadership, team development, and of course fun! (4-Hers will be responsible for $150 total. $50 of that may be reimbursed by following instructions on page 6 of this Informer.) Applications are due to the Extension Office by April 1. State 4-H Jr. Leader Conference Tuesday, June 19 Friday, June 22 University of Indianapolis 4-H Members in Grades 9-12 Develop leadership, understanding of group dynamics, and an awareness of self and others. The conference is carried out with the guidance of the State 4-H Junior Leader Council members elected at each conference to conduct the next year's program. Complete health & behavior expectation form in this Informer & submit to the Extension Office. Cost before scholarship = $165 Submit check made payable to Wabash County 4-H Council to the Extension Office. Register by May 1. 3

4 Who: Grades 9-12 When: June 13-15, Purdue University 4-H Academy provides learning experiences and opportunities for 4-H members to: Meet & make friends with youth from across the state, as well as a select group of students from other states. Live on the Purdue University campus and experience life in a residence hall. Participate in a conference planned & prepared by resident faculty at Purdue University. What Workshops are offered? Animal Science Workshop Learn scientific principles of Animal Sciences, increase awareness of Animal Industry Issues and learn about career opportunities in animal agriculture. Limit 40 (state-wide) per section except Animal Bio-Science. Animal Bio-Science (Limit: 10) Animal Health Food Animal 1 (beef, dairy, sheep, and goat Horse & Companion Animal (horse, dog, cat, llama, and zoo animals) Citizenship in 4-H Start Local Go Global How do local & state governments work? How can I impact issues important to me? What international opportunities are available through 4-H and beyond? Debate in a County Council format. (Limit: 50) Entrepreneurship: Have a business or product idea but aren t sure how to get started? Make connections in the world of entrepreneurship. Interact with world-class faculty and staff while you develop and plan the next great Indiana business! Food Science & Nutrition: Learn about the science and nutrition of food from farm to fork! Participants will explore several aspects of food production, processing, preparation and consumption. Learn where our food comes from, how to reduce food waste, and preparation techniques for local produce (Limit: 25) Healthy Living Exploring Health Careers: Experience field trips & hands-on activities related to nursing, emergency medical services, athletic training and more! Students will also become CPR certified! Intro to EMS: Become CPR certified. Complete hands-on activities: scene size-up, patient assessment, rescue techniques, scene preservations, radio procedures & tour fire stations, emergency helicopters & Mobile Simulation Ambulances. Natural Resources: Learn about forestry and wildlife management through hands-on activities on location at the Purdue Forestry Center. Learn about natural resource career opportunities. Plant Sciences: Learn about plants, insects, bioenergy and natural resources. (Limit: 20) $how Me the Money: Learn the essentials of financial management from the best network of financial professionals in the state. Experience a full day of Where Does Your Money Go adventures at vendor locations in Lafayette. Learn new tools to make financial goals a reality. (Limit: 21) Spread the News: Interested in a career in communication or journalism? Participants will use computers and cameras to develop news stories and photos for print and social media while exploring careers for professional communicators. Stem it UP!- (Now includes all the following workshops!) Computer Science: Gain exposure to trends in computer science. Topics may include using the World Wide Web, homepage design, learning/using Flash, designing/programming an interactive multimedia program, etc. Engineering: Learn how robots operate, what makes a good fuel for internal combustion engines, how computer draw without pencils, how to select the best vegetable/fruit variety for mechanical harvesting, & how to surf the Internet. Learn about various engineering fields. Robotics Youth in teams of 4 will design & build a robot that can be utilized to recycle trash. Teams will be provided with a VEX robotics kit and a set of tools. Each team has approximately 12 hours to complete the task before competing against other teams to see who has designed & built the most effective trash recycling robot. (Limit: 20) The Science of Flight (Formerly Aerospace)- Build model rockets & planes, take a ride in a small airplane, & study aerodynamics to learn the principles of flight & career opportunities. Cost before 4-H Council Scholarship = $190 Complete the health, behavior expectations, and 4-H Youth Science Workshop forms included in this informer. Submit checks payable to Wabash County 4-H Council to the Extension Office. Payment and all forms must be submitted to the Extension Office by May 1. All participants and a parent/guardian must attend a meeting with Angela prior to leaving for 4-H Academy. 4

5 State Fair Youth Leadership Conference Tuesday, July 31 Saturday, August 4 4-H Members who have completed grades 9-12 ISFYLC provides young men and women with leadership experiences through a mock legislative session, leadership activities, and other events. The conference s program offers leadership training in group dynamics and self-government, shared leadership and cooperation. Complete health & behavior expectation form in this Informer and submit to Extension Office. Submit payment to the Extension Office (check payable to Wabash County 4-H Council). Cost before 4-H Council scholarship = $125 Register by June 1. National 4-H Dairy Conference Sunday, September 30 Thursday, October 4 4-H ers in Grades 9-12 at time of conference Better understand operations involved in production, processing, marketing, and use of dairy products. Gain a broader understanding of careers available in dairy production, processing, marketing, and selected areas. Delegates should meet the following requirements: Previously complete at least three years of 4-H dairy program; Have an outstanding record of 4-H accomplishments with major emphasis on dairy animal projects. Have the ability to make a real contribution to the conference and be capable of bringing inspiration and information back to their home county. Cannot be an exhibitor in the World Dairy Expo or participant in National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. Delegates may attend this conference only one time. Delegates should meet the following requirements: Complete health & behavior expectation form in this Informer and submit to the Extension Office. Submit payment to the Extension Office (check payable to Wabash County 4-H Council). Cost before 4-H Council scholarship = $450. Register by July 1. Mini 4-H Day Camp Register by June 1 by logging in at in.4honline.com and adding an event OR by completing a paper application. Submit $25 payable to Purdue CES Ed Fund Wabash County to the Extension Office by June 1 in order to reserve your spot at camp! (Please note, fees for this camp are NOT able to be reimbursed by the 4-H Council.) Complete Health & Behavior Expectation forms included in this Informer. 5

6 April Bradford Woods at Martinsville, Indiana 4-H Members in Grades 9-12 Teens as Teachers Conference allows teams of youth to participate in specific, subject matter workshops. Teams learn to teach the content, then return to teach what they learned to other youth in the community. The 2017 Biotechnology Team of Travis Corn, Evelynn Gray, Ashlyn Rody, Carson Rody, and Emmy Titus attended in Have you seen the 2017 team conducting experiments with soy plastic, ooblek, strawberry DNA, living seed necklaces and find the experiments to be interesting? This is your opportunity to create a NEW Teens as Teacher teams in Wabash County. Teens as Teachers Tracks Include: Biotechnology: Learn how to train, create, and implement a Science Behind Agriculture program in your community. Automated Animal Biosecurity: Youth will learn how to teach about animal biosecurity through hands-on maker and robotics activities designed for youth learning using creativity and self-discovery. Healthy Living: Teens will train to create and implement healthy living programs such as nutrition, physical activity, and social/ emotional health in their community. Teen Leadership: Teams will learn to lead communitybased activities designed to help peers develop leadership life skills, leading to enhanced workforce preparation. Form a team of 3-5 youth. Team members do not have to be in 4-H. However, non-4-h members are not eligible to receive a scholarship to attend. 4-H members expenses for the weekend will be covered by Wabash County 4-H Council Camp Scholarship funds. If you cannot find enough for a team or an adult chaperone, contact the Extension Office to obtain assistance. Submit Health Forms to the Extension Office by March 15. Be sure to designate which track your team wishes to attend. (If you are new to teaching others, please consider How can you attend a camp or workshop mentioned in this Informer for Free? General Information: Wabash County 4-H Council is offering a scholarship for any camp/workshop up to the amount of $200. What if the camp/workshop costs more than the $200 allotted by the 4-H Council? The 4-H er is still eligible to receive the $200 camp scholarship. (Requirements below must be met to receive $200 in full.) If the remaining balance is a burden that would keep you from attending, contact Angela Christopher (christ67@purdue.edu) to hear additional funding options. How do you receive your scholarship? 4-H members must be registered for camp by the event registration deadlines outlined in this Informer newsletter. At the time of registration, 4-H members will pay a $50 deposit for each camp he/ she registers to attend. The $50 deposit will be returned after the 4-H member completes one of the following options designed to allow other 4-Hers to see/hear about fun activities, lessons, team building, and friendships gained at 4-H camps/workshops: Create a poster for display at the Wabash County 4-H Fair. Speak to the audience at a Wabash County 4-H Fair Show/Event. Do a demonstration showing a skill/ activity you learned while participating at camp/workshop at a community event like First Friday, Kid-O-Rama, the 4-H Fair, TSC Clover Drives, or an event approved by the 4-H Educator. Do a radio or newspaper interview. Please note the 4-H Council s funding offer does not apply to Mini 4-H Day Camp. 6

9 Behavioral Criteria for 4-H Events and Activities: To 4-H members, volunteers, parents and the public: When attending, participating or acting on behalf of the 4-H program, all persons are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with accepted standards of social behavior, to respect rights of others, and to refrain from any conduct which may be injurious to the 4-H program. The following actions constitute misconduct for which persons may be subject to disciplinary penalties and/or dismissal from the program: (a) Dishonesty in connection with any 4-H activity by cheating or knowingly furnishing false information. (b) Alteration or unauthorized use of 4-H records. (c) Obstruction or disruption of any 4-H activity or aiding and encouraging other persons to engage in such conduct. (d) Failure to comply or aiding or encouraging other persons not to comply with specific terms and conditions of a given project, contest, or activity. (e) Failure to comply with directions of 4-H officials acting in the proper performance of their duties. (f) Inhumane treatment of 4-H animal projects. There are many opportunities for 4-H members, volunteers, parents and the public to participate in 4-H events and activities. When involved in such experiences, members, volunteers, parents and the public are expected to follow all rules and regulations as outlined by those responsible for the specific program or activity. In all such 4-H activities, the following constitute a violation of behavioral expectations: 1. Possession or use of fire crackers, gun powder, firearms, chemicals or other materials that can be used to create an explosive mixture. 2. Misuse of fire equipment or sounding a false fire alarm. 3. Having a guest of the opposite gender in your sleeping quarters. 4. Physical or verbal abuse of any person or conduct which threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person. 5. Theft of or malicious damage to property. 6. Possession, use, or distribution of alcohol, illegal drugs, tobacco and tobacco-like products, or other dangerous substances. 7. Inappropriate displays of affection towards another person(s). 8. Inappropriate clothing or lack of clothing during the event or activity. 9. Lewd, indecent, or obscene conduct. 10. Unauthorized entry, use or occupancy of any facility. 11. Any conduct which threatens or interferes with maintenance of appropriate order and discipline or invades the rights of others. When violations occur at out-of-county, district, area, and/or state and/or national 4-H events, the following procedures will be followed. (a) The parents/legal guardians will be contacted to arrange transportation home for the violator(s) and (b) The local extension educator will be notified. I verify that I am a 4-H member, I have read and will abide by the rules and behavioral expectations, set by the Indiana 4-H program or I will forfeit my right to stay.
