1 UNLTD An Introduction, Ashley Raywood Award Manager (North East, Yorkshire and Humber) January 2015
INTRODUCTION 2 About is the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs. We were established in 2002 to manage the Millennium Awards Trust (MAT), a perpetual endowment of 100m from the Millennium Commission. We also attract funding from a range of other sources to expand our impact, now forming more than half of our work. What we do We invest directly in individuals by making Awards to social entrepreneurs in the UK. Awards include funding, advice, access to networks, pro-bono support and mentors, and practical support. We help build the wider ecosystem of support for social entrepreneurs, by helping other organisations to deliver support in the UK and beyond. We seek to influence the environment in which social entrepreneurs start up and thrive, experimenting, learning and using what we learn to influence policy and practice, acting as an entrepreneurial change agent
OUR MISSION and VISION Our Vision, Mission and Strategy. 3 Our Vision Our vision is for a world where people act to make it better. Our Mission Our mission is to reach out and unleash the energies of people who can transform the world in which they live. We call these people social entrepreneurs. Our strategy In 2010 we published a new five-year strategy. It set out the three strategic approaches that guide our work: Backing social entrepreneurs in their communities: developing many community level ventures and building a movement for social action Helping social entrepreneurs with high potential for growth to scale up their ventures Helping to develop the social entrepreneur support sector into an effective system of help which makes it much easier for social entrepreneurs to get going and thrive
AWARD MAKING: HEADLINES Since 2003, and our partners have given out over 12,000 Awards to support individuals and small groups of people to start up or grow social ventures that s over 42 million cash directly to social entrepreneurs. 12,585 Awards Number of Awards distributed to social entrepreneurs, by directly or through our partners 21,700 people People receiving these Awards, individually or as part of small groups. We call these people Award Winners million Total cash distributed to social entrepreneurs as Awards Luke Rodgers of Foster Focus, winner of the Young Social Entrepreneur Award (judges choice) at the inaugural Lived It Awards.
#4socents 5 OUR SUPPORT MODEL Scout, filter, engage, connect Scouting: We go out and find the most social and entrepreneurial people Filtering: We select for eligibility & employ entrepreneurial people to judge the best Engaging: We listen and find out what will help them move forward Connecting: We connect them to the support tailored to their needs Seed funds Support Connections
THE SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURIAL JOURNEY Our Awards are designed to support social entrepreneurs through their journey, whatever stage they are at and to wherever they are trying to get to. Try It, Do It and Build it represent a progression, while Fast Growth and Scale It gives ambitious social entrepreneurs opportunity to scale rapidly, whatever their starting point. 6 THE JOURNEY Developing an idea: blueprint Doing It: market testing Going full time: getting sustainable Going beyond just you: growth OUR AWARDS TRY IT >> DO IT >> BUILD IT SCALE IT >> BVC FAST GROWTH >> SCALE IT>> INCUBATION, WAYRA UNLTD
