AGENDA FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The World Food Programme is focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. We can help in four areas: 1. Ensuring everyone has access to food 2. Bringing down levels of malnutrition 3. Ensuring enough food is available 4. Making food systems as resilient as possible 4
ABOUT WFP 5
5 KEY FACTS ABOUT WFP The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide, since We are 100% voluntarily funded by governments, the private sector and individuals. On average, we reach more than 80 million people with food assistance in 82 countries. Approximately people work for WFP, most of them in remote areas, directly serving the hungry and poor. We partner with national governments, NGOs, institutions, private companies, and others. 6
GLOBAL PRESENCE WFP is headquartered in Rome. We have a global presence that includes: 83 Country Offices worldwide 6 Regional Bureaux (Bangkok, Cairo, Dakar, Johannesburg, Nairobi and Panama) 14 offices in world capitals Over employees worldwide, with a commitment to diversity and gender parity 7
FUNDING WFP is 100 percent voluntarily funded. Funding comes from: Governments 94% Private Sector (and individuals) 2.0% Other* 4.0% * UN funds and agencies Donations are either cash or goods/services. 8
DONOR GOVERNMENTS Most of WFP s funding comes from governments. In 2016, WFP received US$5.9 billion. The top five government donors were: USA European Commission Germany UK Canada 9
WHAT WE DO 10
11
SAVING LIVES The World Food Programme is best known for its life-saving work in emergencies. When disaster strikes, WFP gets vital food assistance to people in need. We also provide food and support that bridges the gap between relief and recovery. 12
FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS When food is not available on local markets, or people cannot get to the shops, we deliver food to them. We work with local NGO partners to organize the distributions. Foods provided can include: Flour/rice/bulgur Lentils/split peas Cooking oil Iodized salt To prevent and treat malnutrition we provide specialized nutritional products formulated for particular nutritional needs. 13
PROVIDING FOOD ASSISTANCE WITH CASH When food is available on the market but people cannot afford it, we often provide cash. This enables people to buy what they need, when they need it. Sometimes we provide food vouchers that can be redeemed at local retailers. Distributing cash allows people to spend in their communities and so boosts local economies. WFP s deep field presence and analysis of food security and market data inform smart decisions, also allowing a switch between cash and food rations, if needed. In 2016, cash and vouchers worth US$880 million helped out 14 million people in 60 countries. 14
WORKING TO END MALNUTRITION Improving nutrition is a core element of our work, whether we re working in an emergency or a longer-term setting. WFP helps ensure people have access to nutritious diets so they get what they need to live healthy, productive lives. We focus particularly on people with high nutrient needs, such as young children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and nursing mothers. 15
OUR WORK We do whatever it takes to ensure those furthest behind can get the safe, nutritious food they need. We tackle causes, not just symptoms, by: Helping governments develop and implement anti-hunger strategies Helping the most vulnerable people eat more nutritious food Ensuring people have access to food even in emergencies Helping make food systems in countries more resilient to shocks. 16
