1 The Douglas County Chamber of Commerce High School Leadership Program Youth Leadership Douglas Welcome to Youth Leadership Douglas! This leadership training program is grounded in community awareness, community service and in developing your personal potential to lead. About the Youth Leadership Douglas Program Leadership is more than just raw talent and determination. While a portion of great leadership is aptitude, a great deal of what it takes to be a leader is skill based and can be learned. Participants will acquire and broaden their knowledge of local government, business and civic activities through this 4 month leadership program. The Youth Leadership Douglas program is highly interactive which permits participants to review the impact each topic has on themselves as well as the larger community. Students in Youth Leadership Douglas will also be assigned an adult leadership mentor in their career area of interest. The Youth Leadership Douglas goals are: To provide opportunities for participants to develop an understanding of the meaning and responsibilities of personal, organizational and community leadership. To produce ethical leaders committed to active community involvement. Expectations Youth Leadership Douglas participants must be able to attend ALL meetings to be recognized as a graduate of Youth Leadership Douglas at their school s Honors Program. Classes will be held from the first Tuesday of each month (pending school holidays) at various locations from 2p.m. 6 p.m., with the exception of an all day retreat in July or December. A detailed schedule is provided as the Youth Leadership Douglas curriculum. If a student cannot commit to attending the meetings, application is not encouraged. Attendance is mandatory. A portion of YLD classes will be held during school hours and the principals have allowed this to be an excused absence. YLD students must coordinate transportation to and from YLD classes. All program communication is done electronically. Each student is required to set up an account and Facebook account in order to maintain correspondence with the group. Program Fee The fee to participate in the program is $200.00, which includes the full-day retreat and all class expenses. Program Description Youth Leadership Douglas is a four month program that has two sessions. Fall session begins in August 2011 and ends in November 2011, and Spring session begins January 2012 and ends in April 2012 for high school juniors only. Six rising juniors from each Douglas County high school (both public and private) will be selected by their school faculty and administration. These students will then be interviewed by the YLD Program Coordinator and two per school will be selected. Students must apply and qualify through an application and interview process, which is under the direction of the individual school. There will be approximately 12 to 16 students selected for each session.
