2 What is philanthropy? Altruistic concern for human welfare and advancement, usually manifested by donations of money, property, or work to needy persons, by endowment of institutions of learning and hospitals, and by generosity to other socially useful purposes. From the Greek: philanthrōpía = love for mankind. Philanthropy v. fundraising Philanthropy is an opportunity - you provide the opportunity for someone else to make an impact on the community. Better yet, it's THE impact they wanted to make anyway. They were looking for it. You're the matchmaker. Part I: Passion and Philanthropy 2

3 Building a culture of passion You need passion first believers who are loud and proud. Building a culture of passion Internal branding Clearly passionate leadership Stories Internal branding Every person in the nonprofit has a clear sense why the nonprofit exists: Its benefit in the community Its efficacy Its importance Its ability to impact the mission People inside the organization know and say we are great. 3

4 Passionate leadership Internal branding is top-down when the leaders (board and executive and management staff) believe the organization is outstanding, the staff will begin to believe it too. Stories From vision and mission and strategic priorities on down to daily program information, all staff and board members have their own stories about why the nonprofit is great. Creating your own story For the next 30 seconds, think of something you absolutely adore about your organization. In groups of 2, explain it and why it is fabulous. 4

5 Telling stories Andy Goodman s 10 rules of story telling: 1. Stories are always about people 2. Your protagonist must want something 3. Fix your story in time and space 4. Let your characters speak for themselves 5. Surprise the audience 6. Speak the audience s language 7. Stir up emotions 8. Stories don t tell: they show 9. Include a moment of truth 10. 6 Creating a culture of passion Nothing as difficult as changing a culture can happen by accident. You need systems in place to create a cultural shift in internal and external messaging. Culture of passion: core ideology Continually renew and refresh your staff and board s passion by reviewing and discussing your nonprofit s mission, vision, and values. Culture of passion: strategy Take the time to develop the strategic directions for your nonprofit. Make sure the strategic directions relate to the core ideology. Refer to the strategic directions often: Monitoring plan Operational plan Systematic feedback 6

7 Culture of passion: meetings Use staff meetings, board meetings, volunteer meetings to refresh and instill passion about the organization Mission moments in meetings Kudos, high fives, and mission-based awards Ask staff, volunteers, and board members to develop their stories Practice telling the stories Philanthropy and fundraising Matchmaker, matchmaker, make me a match. Find me a find. Catch me a catch. Redefine fundraising At its core, fundraising is about an opportunity for philanthropy. At its core, fundraising is about matchmaking. At its core, fundraising is about building relationships. 7

8 A review What is philanthropy? Altruistic desire to give back to the community What do you need to build a culture of philanthropy? Passion, opportunity to make matches Fundraising is a natural outcome of a philanthropic environment. Choice People like to choose. Give them lots of seats in your living room to choose from. Engagement Engage volunteers and staff in a variety of ways to encourage their advocacy. Internal branding Tell them how to engage Engage everyone in fundraising, everyone in advocacy. Connect the dots between fundraising, advocacy and marketing and make sure it all relates back to your strategy and mission. 8

9 Engagement continued Everyone has different talents, so match people up with their strengths: Writers-direct mail appeals, newsletter articles, grant proposals. Party planners-house parties and events Assignment List ways to involve your board, staff, and volunteers in messaging and fundraising without ever asking for money. List ways to develop your board, staff, and volunteers into outstanding advocates and solicitors.
