2 School Health Grants Action for Healthy Kids Typically Due: Early April Breakfast in the Classroom - $2,500 Every Kid Healthy (PA) - $2,500 for- schools/apply- for- grants SHAPE Grants Typically Due: Early May Core: Nutrition Only- $3,000 Enhanced: Nutrition & Physical Activity- $5,000 physical- activity- and- nutrition- grants Fuel Up to Play 60 Typically Due: June & November Nutrition & Physical Activity Plays - $4,000
3 School Health Grants Action for Healthy Kids
4 Action for Healthy Kids Grants School Breakfast Grants Up to 550 schools nationally will receive grant awards $500 to $5,000 to support a pilot or expand School Breakfast Programs with a goal of increased breakfast participation Game On Grants Up to 500 schools are funded nationally $500 to $2,500 will support physical activity and nutrition initiatives that help schools become recognized as a health promoting school Website: for- schools/apply- for- grants
5 Action for Healthy Kids Grants Create an account at the AFHK online School Portal. Schools that are eligible must serve grades K- 12. For the Breakfast grant, schools must participate in the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program. Individual schools can apply for both types of grant opportunities by starting each application in the grant portal. Website: for- schools/apply- for- grants
6 Action for Healthy Kids Grants School districts can complete one application for multiple schools within the district and apply the funds in each school interested in receiving grant funds. NOTE: School districts need to update information for individual school applications with school- specific information and submit individually. Only one user can submit an application for a school You will be able to affiliate yourself with individual schools. Multiple users can be affiliated with a single school, but only one person can begin an application. Website: for- schools/apply- for- grants

8 School Health Grants Fuel Up to Play 60 Grants
9 Fuel Up to Play 60 Grants National Dairy Council, local Dairy Councils (SUDIA), and the National Football League (collaborating with USDA) K- 12 Schools, $4,000 Maximum: Eligible schools: must participate in the National School Lunch Program Applications must include a healthy eating play and physical activity play Must be enrolled in FUTP60 for the school year. Must have a Program Advisor signed up at your school. In order to submit your application, your school must have a Program Advisor signed up.
10 Fuel Up to Play 60 Grants If a school received FUTP60 funds in the past, school must have submitted all reports in order to receive additional funding. Must have support, involvement and approval on the application from the: school principal, school nutrition professional, lead physical education teacher, and Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor Funding requests may only be submitted by schools, not individuals.

13 Shape Grant Purpose To assist schools in creating policy and environmental changes To support all students in selecting and eating healthier food options and engaging in physical activity throughout the school day. Focus on policy, systems, or environmental change strategies to support a healthier school nutrition environment and increase physical activity.

Maximum reach/touch of students & staff PPSE Strategies Choose something you can. Do within 1 school year Get your staff and parents to support & sustain Measure easily
15 SHAPE School Grants Items to Consider In order to get a higher score on your grant proposal, you should you avoid proposing: 1. One- time events (health fairs) 2. Low reach, low dose strategies Few children touched only a few times 3. Activities that are difficult to sustain when the $ is gone 4. Just feeding kids 5. Difficult to measure or low impact strategies (see #1!)
16 The first thing I should do when writing a grant is. A. Figure out how to spend the money B. Talk to school staff about what they want C. Read the grant RFA to see if we can achieve the deliverables D. Decide what we will measure

21 SHAPE School Grants Must complete SHI/Alliance Nutrition & PA Assessment (assistance is available to help with assessment completion after the grant is awarded) Strategies/Activities proposed must focus on policy, systems & environmental (PSE) change: see toolkit link for ideas
22 School Name will send representatives to the one- day summit. SHAPE School Grants School Name will participate in training, technical assistance and other support provide by the SHAPE grant. School Name will submit a final report for the SHAPE grant by June 30, 2016 that summarizes our activities and outcomes. Activities should focus on policy, systems & environmental change!
