1 N A T I O N W I D E B U I L D I N G S O C I E T Y C O M M U N I T Y G R A N T S C R I T E R I A INTRODUCTION Nationwide Building Society was founded to help people into homes of their own. And now you can help them support local housing projects in your area, so even more people can have a place fit to call home. How does it work? Housing projects and charities from around the UK can apply to us for grants to help make a change in their local areas. The applications will be reviewed and shortlisted by a regional Community Board, made up of Nationwide members, employees and charity partners. The shortlist will then be put to Nationwide members to vote on in that region. The idea is that we ll not just be able to give the winning projects a grant, but also community support. We will be awarding grants of: Between 10,000 and 25,000 for bids from singular organisations; and Between 10,000 and 50,000 for bids from partnerships and consortia. What difference will it make? Local housing projects are a great way to provide the kind of homes communities really need, whether it s homes to buy or homes to rent. With these grants, the projects will be able to do things like provide housing services to people in need and support the most vulnerable. What will we support? We support projects grouped under three key themes: 1. Improves conditions (this could be physical, emotional or social) 2. Directly helps people into a decent and affordable home (this could be through supported accommodation or stable rental accommodation) 3. Indirectly helps people into decent and affordable homes through the creation/evaluation/research of innovative ideas that challenge the existing housing model BASIC ELIGIBILITY This fund is open to the following organisations: Registered UK charities Charitable Incorporated Organisations
2 Companies Limited by Guarantee with charitable or social objectives Community Interest Companies Consortia and Partnerships are encouraged. Within a partnership/consortia there should be a lead organisation that makes the bid. The lead organisation must also be one of the above community groups and not a statutory organisation, housing association, constituted community or voluntary sector group. This is a pilot fund, open to groups in the following areas (local authority areas within this are outlined in appendix 1): County Durham Cumbria North and East Yorkshire Northumberland Teesside Tyneside Wearside INELIGIBILITY This fund is not open to: Individuals or individual sponsorship Activities connected to a political party Activities generating private profit Faith groups are welcome to apply but we do not fund religious activities. GRANTS Singular organisations can apply for grants of between 10,000 and 25,000 and consortia or partnerships can apply for grants of between 10,000 and 50,000. Community groups that can draw in match funding are encouraged to apply. Match funding should be considered for large-scale capital costs that we cannot fund. Funded projects can run for up to two years. WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Here are some examples of the types of project we are aiming to fund: Tenancy support helping people to access affordable private rented accommodation and sustain it through a range of different interventions from money management classes, DIY workshops empowering individuals to complete small repairs, to support with accessing employment, education and training programmes. Independent living provide rent deposits and support for people with learning disabilities or mental health issues to move on from supported accommodation to private rented homes with support from a key worker.
3 Older people at home - support older people to maintain accommodation and live at home independently for as long as possible through tailored advice, information and preventing hazards at home. E.g. hanging curtains, removing chip pans and replacing with the electronic equivalent. Young people set up mediation services to enable young people to access counselling services to reconcile where appropriate family relationships and prevent them from becoming homeless. Facilitation of supported lodgings schemes to enable young people to access a safe place to live. Rent Deposit Loan schemes set up and manage an affordable loan scheme to enable families to access good quality homes that have been pre-inspected in the private rented sector. The money is paid back at small affordable amounts to enable more families to access the scheme. Projects could include a worker to help people to access the scheme by finding properties. Support with budgeting to manage bills and pay back the loan could be a feature of the worker s role too. PRIORITIES FOR SHORTLIST Small local organisations Projects that link with Nationwide s aims and key themes referenced above in the introduction Groups that demonstrate a clearly defined need Those with an innovative approach to a clearly defined need Those demonstrating effective practice and successful methodology Groups that successfully demonstrate the impact their project will have on communities Those that have a robust plan to measure and report positive changes made Those that demonstrate sustainability beyond the life of this grant WHAT WE WILL FUND Note: Please read all footnotes Core costs. Budget for running and facility costs, office equipment, supplies, any travel and accommodation, printing etc 1. Staff costs. This can also include perishable capital, which are items that are required for the delivery of a project, such as paint, paintbrushes and gardening equipment. 3
4 Footnotes: 1 No more than 20% of the awarded grant should be spent on core costs. 2 Staff costs will not be funded for statutory organisations, housing associations or constituted community and voluntary sector organisations, that are applying in partnership with a community group. 3 In general we would not expect to cover capital costs greater than 10% of the awarded grant value.
