CALL TO ORDER The Chair called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm Date: Monday, September 11, 2017 Time: 7:00 pm Location: The Civic Centre Civic Centre Rd, Keswick Committee Room 2. ROLL CALL AND WELCOME Margaret Quirk, Mayor Frank Sebo, Councillor, Ward 4 Jim Beechey (Chair) Kostas Kyriopoulos Dan Fellini, Councillor, Ward 2 Andi Mahony (Vice-Chair) Robin Smith Don Ennis Matthew Brady Karyn Stone, Manager of Economic Development and Tourism Cristina Liu, Administrative Assistant, Economic Development and Tourism Sean Columbus, Economic Development Officer The following Committee members were absent with regrets: Amanda Stewart 3. COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS Margaret Quirk updated the Committee that the Charity Motorcycle Ride on September 10 th was very successful with 125 participants and $8,000 raised towards the Legion veteran banner program. Karyn Stone welcomed a new Committee member Matthew Brady. Mathew is a Portfolio Manager/Regional Investment Analyst at Public Services and Procurement Canada. Margaret Quirk informed the Committee that the Georgina Harvest Dinner was hosted at The Link on September 9 th. The event was sold out and food was provided by Chef Cori Doern. Many positive comments were received from attendees. 4. INTRODUCTION OF ADDENDUM ITEMS 4.1. Karyn Stone would like to add item: Update on the Jackson s Point Harbour and a number of updates under Other Business 4.2. Jim Beechey would like to add an update under Other Business for the Georgina 200 Committee and his visit to Elgin County. 5. APPROVAL OF AGENDA RESOLUTION NO: EDC Moved by Dan Fellini, Seconded by Don Ennis.
2 6. DECLARATIONS OF PECUNIARY INTEREST AND GENERAL NATURE THEREOF 7. ADOPTION OF MINUTES 7.1. Minutes of the July 17, 2017 Meeting RESOLUTION NO: EDC Moved by Margaret Quirk, Seconded by Frank Sebo. Carried 8. DELEGATIONS/SPEAKERS 9. PRESENTATIONS 9.1. Canadian International School Presentation Search for Canadian Location - The Canadian International School has approached a number of Municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area in search of a location for their first school in Canada. CIS operates a private elementary and secondary school located in Ho Chi Ming City, Vietnam and teach the Toronto District School Board curriculum to international students. CIS has approached The Town of Georgina as a potential location for their school. Hugh McKeown, the CIS project manager, has been speaking to the Economic Development Division and the CAO in regards to potential sites for their school. Hugh McKeown will present to Council on September 20 th. The committee viewed the CIS video that provides an overview of the school operations in Ho Chi Ming City. 10. REPORTS Economic Development Work Plan & Progress Report Investment Attraction Strategy Update (website, profile pages, video, Semi Annual Newsletter, E-news) - The Economic Development area within the Town s website has been updated with the new marketing materials and can be accessed directly through the new website choosegeorgina.ca Commercial and Industrial properties for sale have now been uploaded to this area of the website. Sean Columbus will be updating these listings. The Fall newsletter will be completed and distributed by mail to commercial addresses and posted on the website. This newsletter features a spotlight on business and will feature Kesmac Brouwer Turf Equipment Update on Keswick Business Park - On Friday September 8 th Karyn met with the owner of the business park, Mr. John Gallucci, his consultant Matthew Cory and the Town s consultant, Mr. Eric McSweeney to discuss how Mr. Gallucci intends to proceed with the registration of the draft plan of subdivision. Further research is required before preparing a report outlining any potential opportunities to expedite development of the lands. - Amazon is searching for a new location to build their second headquarters in North America. York Regional municipalities, including Georgina, have been working together with Toronto Global to submit a proposal to Amazon Update on Grant Application Processing & Application Form - The Economic Development and Community Building application has been updated. Application should be submitted 6 months before the event and no applications will be accepted 30 days prior to the start date. All organizers who have submitted an application within the last 2 years will be sent an updated form Signage Strategy Implementation Plan
3 - An inventory of the new signage has now been mapped and is on the Town s GIS software. Sean Columbus will now be mapping the location of the signs that require replacement and signage identified as a priority by the BIA. Dan Fellini suggested allowing business to pay to advertise at the bottom of new tourism signs in the BIA areas. This will allow the BIA to increase their revenue stream Jackson s Point Harbour front Redevelopment Update - The Planning Partnership will be presenting the findings of their research and public input to Council on September 19 th at 7 pm. All information can be found at georgina.ca - Frank Sebo encouraged anyone who believes that the harbour is important to Georgina to submit their comments and show up to the meeting on September 19. Councillor Sebo would like to ensure there is a boat ramp incorporated into the redevelopment plans. RESOLUTION NO: EDC Moved by Robin Smith, Seconded by Kostas Kyriopoulos. Carried Verbal Update BIA s Councillor Dan Fellini & Councillor Frank Sebo - Dan Fellini advised that the Uptown Keswick Harvest Festival is being held on Saturday September 16. The event has raised $2,600 in sponsorships thus far. Activities include bouncy castles, horse and buggy rides as well as a classic car show. The street closure will be in effect from 9 am to 3 pm. - Frank Sebo advised the Sutton BIA will host a board meeting tomorrow night Verbal Update Chamber of Commerce Jim Beechey - Lunch and Learn event with the Mayor will be hosted at The Link on September 19 th - Meet the Honey Bees hosted by the Chamber on Saturday Sept 23 rd - Stilettos and Sneakers September 30 th at the Georgina Ice Palace. - Breaknet will be held on October 4 th at Baileys Homestead. - The Business Excellence Awards and Mayor and Council awards will be held on October 19 th. Social media has increased the awareness of this event and the number of nominations has surpassed previous years. - The Chamber is seeking the assistance of an acoustical engineer to review the design requirements necessary to provide the noise abatement in their new space. An extension to stay in their temporary space is required and will be presented to Council on September 27 th - Chamber has prepared infographics for the visitor data that was collected by the student staff members this year. General Information Items Disposition Items Economic Development and Community Betterment Grant Application District 8 Fall Leadership Conference 2017 November 3-5, 2017 Sutton Kinettes Amanda Grey RESOLUTION NO. EDC Moved by Dan Fellini, Seconded by Robin Smith, That the Georgina Economic Development Committee provide a grant in the amount of $1560 to the Kinettes. That the organization be requested to recognize the Town of Georgina as a sponsor of the event by having the words Sponsored by the Town of Georgina on all pieces of marketing materials including posters, banners and websites in a prominent location, although EDC recognizes that most if not all marketing materials have been produced and disseminated. That the organization recognize that the Town of Georgina is sponsoring the events coffee break by placing a sign in a visible area at the events location. That the organization be provided with a copy of the guidelines for the use of the Town watermark and be required to comply with these guidelines. That the organization provide the Economic Development and Tourism office with a financial statement, the numbers of attendees and their place of residence (postal codes) within 90 days of the event. That the organization be provided with tourism material from the Economic Development and Tourism office that can then be distributed to participants of the event. 12. MOTIONS/NOTICES OF MOTION 13. OTHER BUSINESS - Jim Beechey. Georgina 200 requested that consideration be given to having the Georgina 200 logo on the street banners. The Committee is putting together a budget for the 200 celebrations. Jim visited Elgin County last week and noted that they have a Community Improvement Plan with a budget of over 1 million dollars over 10 years. The program has been well received in the community. - In one instance funds were used to convert a former tobacco plant into a multi-unit facility which now provides space for 26 brand new businesses, a shrimp farming operation and a medical marijuana business. 14.
