1 2017 STAR AWARDS ENTRY INFORMATION The 2017 STAR Awards Committee is working hard to make sure our 22 nd Annual STAR Awards is the best yet! As one of the many benefits of your membership in the Remodelers Council, this is an excellent opportunity for you to gain recognition for the outstanding work you do! Everything you need is contained in the attached Remodelers STAR Awards Call for Entries. This packet outlines everything you need to know for submission of your projects - from deadline dates, entry fees, submission requirements, judging criteria, and forms for entry. In order for your entry to be considered a complete entry, this paperwork along with payment must be returned via , fax, or in person to the HBA Office, 5580 Centerview Drive, Suite 115 in Raleigh before the deadline date. All entry notebooks are due by the FINAL deadline no exceptions. You may enter up to three (3) categories for each of your project locations. Please also consider entering one of your hard working vendors for the Associate Star Award it s an award to recognize an associate member of the council who went over and beyond on your project. There is no cost to you for entering this category. To help you understand format and criteria that will be used to judge all projects, we have also enclosed an example of the Official Judging Sheet for this year s awards program. STAR Awards winners are promoted to the general public through a marketing campaign in The News & Observer and in the following year s Remodelers Home Tour Magazine, as well as the HBA s website. 3 2017 STAR Awards - Rules and Regulations 1. CRITERIA/CATEGORIES. All projects must be additions, renovations, or restorations of an existing structure or fall into one of the categories below. No new home construction is eligible. ALL PROJECTS MUST BE OF CONSTRUCTION BY NATURE. Cosmetic changes to décor alone are not applicable. There is a $10,000 minimum value to enter any project into the STAR Awards. Note: when calculating price, please do NOT include appliances in the final price of the project Category 1: Best Kitchen Category 2: Best Bathroom Category 3: Best Room Addition Category 4: Best Room Renovation: This category excludes kitchens, baths, attics, and basements Category 5: Best Whole House Renovation Category 6: Best Attic Category 7: Best Basement Category 8: Best Outdoor Living/Deck/Gazebo Category 9: Best Screened Porch Category 10: Best Sunroom Note: Sunrooms must have conditioned air to be judged in this category Category 11: Best Exterior Facelift Category 12: Best Green Certified Remodel: Must provide documentation of certification Category 13: Best Historic Remodel: Must be pre-1945 and maintain the historical character of the house Category 14: Best Universal Design Remodel Category 15: Best Select Interiors Category 16: Best Insurance Repairs, Insurance Restorations, etc. Category 17: Best Light Commercial: please use the homeowners satisfaction as a client satisfaction for this category Categories will not be preset with price ranges. Once all entries are received, the Steering Committee will group according to price range so entries can compete against an equal project as much as possible. Based on number of entries grouped together, a Silver or Bronze Award may be added to the category. If more than six (6) entries are in one category, a Gold and Silver Award will be given. If more than ten (10) entries are in one category, a Gold, Silver, and Bronze Award will be given. Please be sure to enter the correct price point for each entry. Once an entry is submitted, its pricing may not be changed. The Associate STAR Award please see separate entry form for this award. There is no fee to enter this category 2. ELIGIBILITY. All entries must be remodeled by an HBA of Raleigh-Wake County Remodelers Council member in good standing to be eligible for the 2017 STAR Awards. The project must be completed between January 1, 2016 and April 30, 2017 and located in Wake County or within a 25 mile radius of the center of Wake County. Projects entered in a previous STAR Awards are not eligible for re-entry. The location of the center of Wake County is Broughton High School. Projects in Durham, Orange, or Chatham Counties are not allowed. If you have any questions regarding if your project is eligible, please contact Jaclyn at jparks@hbawake.com. Personal projects and family projects are not allowed. 3. COMPLETED ENTRIES. In order to be complete and judged, every entry MUST include the following: A completed Entry Form (including Total Cost of Project) with Entry Fee Homeowners Participation Form filled out and signed by the homeowner. The remodeler is responsible for notifying the homeowner of the judging dates and getting the form to the HBA by the deadline. The HBA will NOT mail this form, this is the responsibility of the remodeler. Homeowners Satisfaction Survey filled out and submitted by the homeowner to the HBA. Please note that price will be verified by the homeowner on this form. Entry Notebooks each entry is required to have its own separate ½ inch 3-ring binder with a clear plastic sleeve for the cover o Entry notebooks must include: Copy of the Completed Entry Form Description of Project/Scope of Work Photos/Plans/Elevations o It is recommended that entry notebooks also include: Any other support material for the project - this includes any further description, outstanding associates, designer/architect and products used, and difficulties encountered, solutions, etc. 3

4 These notebooks will be reviewed by the judges, but are not part of the overall scoring of the project. This is your chance to help your project shine! Include any information you think the judges may find interesting about your project! 4. PHOTOGRAPHS. Each entry notebook should include printed before and after photos of the project. If a project is submitted in multiple categories, each entry notebook must have its own separate printed photos. Please be sure to label photographs printed in notebooks as Before or After where applicable. A high resolution (300 dpi) electronic version of the Signature Photo and (1) Before Photo is also required. You may submit these using the following: On a CD or flash drive dropped off in person with your submissions ed to jparks@hbawake.com Uploaded to a dropbox account that will be shared by Jaclyn with all entrants. Please be sure to label each electronic photograph with the Category Name, Homeowner Last Name, and Company Name, as well as whether it is the Signature Photo or the Before Photo. The STAR Awards is a marketing benefit of your membership in the Remodelers Council. The photographs submitted may be used in a variety of ways, such as in the awards show, press releases, etc., and need to be of professional quality. To avoid potential problems of infringement, it is the responsibility of the remodeler to secure proper authorization for use of copyrighted photographs for the STAR Awards. 5. ENTRY FEE. The Early Bird Entry fee will be $135 for each submission. The Final Deadline Entry fee will be $200 for each submission. Please see the calendar of important dates on page 2 of this packet for deadlines. Payment must be received in the form of a check or credit card on the deadline date with all appropriate materials. Please make checks payable to the HBA of Raleigh-Wake County. Entry fees are non-refundable. There will be absolutely no exceptions made for the deadlines, so please plan accordingly. Once the final deadline has passed, no changes will be allowed to any entry. 6. SITE VISITS/JUDGING. Entries must be available for judges consideration and viewing from 8:30 am until 6:00 pm, weather permitting, both days of judging. You are encouraged to staff the homes for the judging. Homes must have a signed Homeowner Participation form in order to be judged, otherwise the entry will be disqualified. Distinguished experts selected for their expertise in the fields of remodeling, architecture, and design, from outside our local area will judge the entries. Each entry will be judged on its own merit based on the entry material submitted, site visit, and only as it relates to the judging criteria. The panel of judges will grade each of the items listed in applicable categories on the point scale listed on the judging sheet. Please note that if you enter the same home in multiple categories, the judges may visit the home on more than one occasion during the two days of judging. The points awarded for each item under the judging criteria will be added to the Homeowners Satisfaction Survey for the total number of points for that entry. If a judging category is not applicable to that project, it will not be factored into the judge s total score. No winning entry will receive below 75% of the applicable total score. Judges, in consultation with the STAR committee, will have the right to change the category for an entry if it is felt that the entry does not qualify in the category for which it was submitted.
