New Resources Volunteering in America Report (Serve.gov.2011). In a 2011 report by the Corporation for National & Community Service, Minneapolis-St. Paul was ranked number one in the list of top five large cities for volunteer rate! Minnesota ranked the third state million Americans have volunteered their time this year, donating 8.1 billion hours. This website offers insight into the who, what, and why of volunteers throughout the United States and how they are making an impact on the toughest problems facing our nation. The Win-Win of Senior Volunteering (Serve.gov, 2011). Reflecting on a recent White House event on senior volunteerism and service, Dr. Erwin Tan penned this White House blog post on the benefits of seniors in service for both individuals and communities. Tan is director of Senior Corps at the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). In the blog, he describes the important role of Senior Corps in matching volunteers age 55+ to assignments in their communities that meet critical needs. Unemployment Statistics on Older Americans (Urban Institute; 2011).While all Americans are feeling the effects of the current economic climate, this recession has hit older Americans particularly hard. During tough economic times, older individuals often experience higher levels of unemployment and they typically take longer to re-enter the 4 of 6 9/3/11 6:50 PM
5 workforce. These updated graphs and tables report unemployment rates and show the ways in which they vary by age, sex, race, and education. Baby Boomers Are a Growing Force In Healthcare (CBS; 2011). There are about 78 million baby boomers in the U.S. and as they head to the next stage of their lives, a grassroots effort in Denver seeks to tap their experience and conviction to improve access to health care for all. The issue of health care can be both overwhelming and confusing, even under the best of circumstances and especially in the current economic climate. Through the initiative Boomers Leading Change in Health, about 100 boomers in metropolitan Denver have signed up, received training and are volunteering in the health care community. Boomers.
