Be prepared because this bought is scheduled for multiple falls. These VRF manufacturers have decided to bring out the big guns from the mainland and beyond (downtown Honolulu) to participate. Our referee will be Mr. Big Scott Inatsuka, President of Lincolne Scott. If you like blood and gratuitous violence (caused by massive paper cuts). or at least a spirited debate, you can t miss our November ASHRAE meeting! Oh yeah if you interested in learning the difference in the products that s also a good reason for attending. Page 2 of 8

3 HISTORICAL By Joseph K. Ting, P.E., P.Eng. Hawaii Chapter Spouses of Dedicated ASHRAE Volunteers The Spouses Involved at Its Beginning (SY ) Since the beginning of this Chapter, some of the spouses of our volunteers such as Dorothee Chee, the late Peggy Kohloss et al were deeply involved with the Chapter activities. Their continuous supports to their respective husbands had formed part of the strong pillars for our organization. That said, it is quite timely for us to feature in this particular issue the late Peggy Kohloss, who supported this Chapter for at least three decades until she moved to Arizona so that she can be closer to her daughters in mainland. Peggy was the beloved wife of our Society Presidential Member, Frederick Kohloss, who was the 21 st Hawaii Chapter President serving this constituency in the Society Year To contact, Fred Kohloss, him at Member s spouse like Peggy was a great partner of our volunteer at home, at work & at ASHRAE Hawaii Chapter. As quoted in the Mechanical Engineering News (Fall 2001) of the University of Delaware, it was indicated that Though Fred and Peggy worked together early in his engineering career, he says that he is just getting to know her now. Well, it is better to be late than never. At least, Fred is able to know Peggy for the last 8 years out of his 65 years of marriage. Condolences to Fred! Margaret Mary (a.k.a. Peggy) Grunwell Kohloss, 85, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Honolulu and Kailua, died on October 6, Peggy was born in Washington, D.C. She was active in the Outdoor Circle and patron of the Honolulu Symphony. She is survived by her beloved husband (Fred), three daughters (Eleanor, Charlotte Foster and Margaret Ralston), four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM on November 27, 2009 at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Punchbowl, Island of Oahu, State of Hawaii Page 3 of 8

4 NEWSLETTER Hawaii s Energy Challenge & Competition By Michael Chang Aloha ASHRAE Hawaii Ohana, Hawaii faces a tough challenge to address it s economic and environmental vulnerability we face in our dependence on oil for our electrical energy and transportation needs. The chart below shows how dependant our State is compared to the rest of the nation on oil for electrical generation. All ASHRAE Hawaii members play a very direct role in addressing the energy and economic security of the islands we call home. Each day we make decisions that allow us to take on this challenge by providing our customers with the most energy efficient products, education and professional services that will contribute to reducing the energy consumption in Hawaii. 5 The spirit of competition to overcome challenges drives excellence in every arena and we must take on each project as our challenge to make the most efficient buildings we can. Let s show the world how ASHRAE Hawaii s members are stepping up to the challenge. 1. Measure and Compare First, let s be sure to know where our projects stand as compared to the competition. The charts that follow below show the average kwh/month/sq. Ft. and kw per Sq. Ft. for Office buildings on Oahu. Where do your clients buildings stand? This is a good start to see where in the ballpark we are and then we need to dig into the details and influence projects to add the metering and trend points needed to gather and share disaggregated HVAC performance information such as: a. Central Plant Performance kw/ton b. Air Side Performance kwh per ton hour delivered, Run time, Delta T, CO2 etc. 2. Share and Educate Once we know where our projects are in comparison with each other, we need to share the gained local knowledge of Hawaii s best Designs, Operational procedures, and Maintenance practices. This ongoing sharing and education within ASHRAE Hawaii will raise the energy performance in all projects. Page 5 of 8

7 STUDENT ACTIVITIES by Paul Fukunaga, P.E. The third annual ASHRAE Career Fair at the University of Hawaii at Manoa is scheduled for October 30, 2009, Ground Floor, Holmes Hall. The donations from the exhibitors at the Fair are used to help fund the travel expenses for the UHM ASHRAE student members to attend the annual ASHRAE Winter Meeting that will be held this year in Orlando, Florida. The students have been enthusiastic about the opportunity to attend a Society meeting to meet other student members and to learn the importance and enormity of the HVAC industry. It has been a very successful recruiting tool. Of the 9 students who have attended the past two winter meetings, 7 are now working in Hawaii in the HVAC industry. If you are not an exhibitor but would like to make a donation for this event, please contact Paul Fukunaga at A field visit to Alakai Mechanical s shop is being planned for November for the HCC Student Chapter. A combined field visit with the YEA and Refrigeration Committees to view the refrigeration system for the Ice Palace is also being planned for early next year. Details will be forthcoming. 8 MEMBERSHIP PROMOTION By Mofazzal Mir Our last chapter meeting was dedicated for membership promotion. Thanks to our members that made a sincere effort to make the event successful. We have observed huge interest among the potential ASHRAE members and few of them committed to be member during the meeting. We were happy to have Ms. Marites Calad the RVC for membership of region X to explain to us this year s ASHRAE membership theme of RECRUIT AND RETAIN and top eleven reasons to be ASHRAE member. Followings are the top eleven reasons mentioned by Ms. Calad during her speech: 1. Discount on ASHRAE products (books, standards, conferences, etc.) 2. Leadership training and development of professional skills 3. Career services and employment possibilities 4. Continuing education, keeping up with current technology, and Access to current HVAC Industry information 5. Networking opportunities for technology, employment and projects 6. A chance to become a chairperson or an officer to gain an experience that will have value on professional resumes 7. Industry respect through ASHRAE affiliation, and/or volunteer ship 8. Access to $2.9 million dollars (this year alone) worth of research information in the industry 9. To help make a difference in the engineering world 10. Be a part of a society that makes the world a better place to live in enhancing the air we breathe, improving workplace environment and creating a better quality of life by providing sustainable solutions 11.
