1 BEAVER AREA MEMORIAL LIBRARY VOL / COLLEGE AVE. Mary Jane Ulmer, Editor BEAVER, PA Vicki Teets, Design Editor WELCOME NEW BAML TRUSTEE The newest member of the Beaver Library Board of Trustees is Cassie Brkich. Cassie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Multimedia from Duquesne University in 2002 with a focus on graphic design. This year she is celebrating ten years as founder and president of Brkich Design Group, a partner to small, independent businesses, providing branding services and creative inspiration. Cassie has a passion connecting people and serving her community through her creative ideas. She and her husband, Val, have been married twelve years, and together they are raising their two young children in Beaver. The staff, volunteers, Friends of the Library, trustees, and members of the community welcome Cassie to the BAML Board of Trustees. SUCCESSFUL SPRING FUND DRIVE The annual fund drive the Beaver Area Memorial Library was launched in the Spring of 2014, and a great community response was received. A grand total of $22,754 was raised, exceeding the goal of $22,000 set in the Spring. These funds are earmarked to directly benefit the programs and services of the BAML. The Board of Trustees extends its appreciation to all those individuals and businesses their generous donations. Without this support the library would be unable to provide the quality materials and services which it presently offers to patrons of all ages in the Beaver area and surrounding communities. 2 BEAVER AREA MEMORIAL LIBRARY 100 COLLEGE AVE. BEAVER, PA Vol /15 Page 2 INNOVATIVE LIBRARY CARD/VISA DEBIT CARD Following four months of discussions with SirsiDynix and a brief pilot test last summer, Maryland s Frederick County Public Libraries in September officially launched the I Love My Library prepaid Visa debit card. Developed by SirsiDynix in partnership with Visa and Card Limited, the new affinity card doubles as a patron s library card and aims to help libraries achieve three goals: 1. Offer unbanked patrons access to a debit card with a transparent fee structure as a component of a library s financial literacy programming 2. Develop deeper ties with local businesses through a Linkable Networks feature that will enable merchants to partner with libraries and other discounts to cardholders 3. Provide a new revenue stream to libraries, which will receive a small donation from Card Limited each time a card is activated, as well as seven percent of each card s monthly fee, a portion of transaction fees, and one to two percent of each affinity card transaction from merchants who partner with the library. Some librarians may find the concept of a prepaid card as a revenue stream in opposition to the nonprofit tradition of public libraries, acknowledged Eric Keith, VP of Global Marketing, Communications and Strategic Alliances SirsiDynix. However, there is a real need these services among many heavy library users. Libraries have the opportunity to tie these cards into financial literacy programs, Keith noted. Library Hotline September 22, 2014 BAML SMOKE-FREE The Beaver Area Memorial Library is smoke and tobaccofree. Tobacco use and smoking of all ms, including the use of electronic cigarettes, vapor cigarettes, and smokefree oral tobacco products, is not permitted anywhere in the building. 3 BEAVER AREA MEMORIAL LIBRARY 100 COLLEGE AVE. BEAVER, PA Vol /15 Page 3 OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES BAML Trustees are dedicated volunteers who work to maintain the highest quality of public library service the Beaver area. Their responsibilities include assuring adequate funding to continue library services and programs and developing the broad policies by which the BAML operates. Trustees attend regular monthly board meetings, special meetings held throughout the community during the year, and all library fundraisers. Current trustees are: Carol Colalella - President Jack Walker Gerri Wood Paul Hoback - Vice President Doris Thompson Jim Mudge Judy McDermott - Secretary Mary Ann Peluso Cassie Brkich John Pizzella - Treasurer ADD THIS BOOK TO YOUR MUST-READ LIST Most people know about Jesse Owens and the feat he pulled off in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Few, however, even those who live in Washington state, know about the University of Washington s 9-man crew and their epic quest gold in those same games. In his non -fiction novel The Boys in the Boat, Daniel James Brown (not the DaVinci Code Dan Brown) has made a major contribution to rectifying that situation. This Brown is a master story teller who recounts all the elements that coalesced to produce a riveting, dramatic tale. He covers history (the Depression, the Dust Bowl, the Third Reich), sociology (class distinctions, teamwork, family dysfunction), psychology (coaches strategies), biology (the Washington timberland is almost a character in the story), craftsmanship (The English-philosopher who knew how to build both racing shells and men). Centered around University of Washington student Joe Rantz, The Boys in the Boat is a heart-stirring story of love, suspense, tenacity, integrity and heroic perseverance. Doris Thompson Trustee - BAML NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK Celebrate National Library Week 2015 (April 12-18) with the theme Unlimited Your Library.
