5 Page 8 Grad Valedictorians/ Class Representative Valedictorian/ Class Representative are members of the graduating class who speaks on behalf of the graduates at the Grad Ceremonies. This honour is usually bestowed on an outstanding male and female of the graduating class. The top student will be the class Valedictorian. In addition, students may nominate themselves with the support of 10 peers (nomination forms will be available on May 1 st, 2014) for class representative. A teacher committee will review all nominations to ensure candidates for class rep. met the requirements (B or higher GPA, good conduct, good citizenship, and has made significant contributions to the school) and the final representative will be chosen by a Grade 12 vote. These TWO individuals will be the Grad Valedictorian and Class Representative. Grad Lock-In There are plenty of fun things to do all night long including swimming, skating, karaoke, casino games, entertainment, prizes and more with unlimited food and beverages and a few surprises. Grads should bring comfortable clothes, swimming gear, skating gear (skate rentals provided). Students are NOT required to bring any money or pay for anything during the evening. Please NOTE: this event includes your grad t-shirt (including all names of the Class of 2014). This is an all night grad event that goes until 5am. Grads must be dropped off at 11pm at MRC with their lock in bag. Grads and their bags will be searched upon arrival. There are no in/ out privileges. Students who need to leave early must inform an administrator before the event who will communicate with the parent. We have also moved Grad Tea to the day of prom based on parent/ student feedback/ survey results. Robert Bateman Secondary Page 5 Provincial Exams & Graduation Status Provincial exams are written at the grade 10, 11, and 12 levels during the months of October, November, January, April, May and June. Schedules for these exams can be found in the following places: Ministry Website: bced.gov.bc.ca/exams School Website: robertbatemansecondary.com Students are required to write FIVE exams in their high school career: English 10, Math 10, Science 10 Social Studies 11 English 12 or Communications 12 Students can earn $1000 to $2500 dollars in a provincial scholarship by having a B in English 12 (school based & provincial mark) and earning a B or higher on 3 remaining provincial exams. Students can also REWRITE a provincial provided they have taken the course in the last 12 months. Students have TWO opportunities to write and the best score will stand. What happens if I take an online course? If a grade 12 student has not completed the AVS/ FVDES course by the Term 4 end date, the final mark may not appear on the student s transcript beginning July 1 st. This means post secondary institutions will see the course as incomplete when they view the transcript online (PSIs). Transcripts provided by the school will not have the final mark on them either. If the course the students is taking is required for graduation, the transcript will show as NON-GRAD on the Ministry website until the final mark has been entered by the DL teacher and submitted by the DL school in August. This means that the student will now be a graduate of the DL school, not Robert Bateman, THIS COULD SERIOUSLY AFFECT A STUDENT S APPLICATION TO UNIVERSITY OR COLLEGE. Grad Fees The grad fee is $180 broken down into two payments options: Payment Option 1 (Full Payment in October) $180 Or Payment Option #2 in three installments as below Payment #1(due October 15-18) $40 Payment #2 (due November 18-22) $50 Payment #3 (due January 20-24) $90 The above payments cover the cost of grad ceremonies ($40), grad lock-in ($50) and grad dinner & dance/ prom ($90). PLEASE NOTE ALL GRAD FEES MUST BE PAID BY MAY 1 ST, 2014 BECAUSE OUR VENDORS REQUIRE NUMBERS. PAYMENTS MADE AFTER MAY 1 ST,
6 Page 6 Page 7 Grad Financial Aid The Grad Council has undertaken a number of fundraising endeavors to pay for students who are experiencing financial hardship. The Grad Council will use their fundraising to pay for students who cannot afford to pay for Grad Ceremonies (walking the stage). While there are no hard and fast rules for asking for financial aid, the school will consider all requests made by February 1 st, 2013 with the following guidelines: income assistance, temporary hardship, loss of employment, or use of other programs including school meals etc. Requests should be made to Mrs. Pollastretti by February 1 st, Optional Grad Activities/ Cost Grad Cruise $65 Grad Movie Night $25 Grad Fright Night TBA Grad Fashion Show $5 Grad Ski Trip TBA Grad Show n Shine FREE Prom Guest (Date) Ticket $90 Grad Movie Madness This Grad and date event at either Mission SilverCity OR Towne Cinema from midnight to 4am.
