1 Blessings NEWS FROM THE CATHOLIC FOUNDATION SUMMER 2018 catholic-foundation.org RONALD C. SULLIVAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND A Full Ride To A Bright Future I m sorry. Would you mind repeating what you said how much was this for again? Ken Mahle couldn t believe his ears when his son told him he was the recipient of the Ronald C. Sullivan Scholarship stewarded by The Catholic Foundation. Dan Kurth, Director of Grants and Community Impact, called Samuel Mahle to notify him that he had been awarded the scholarship that would give him $25,000 every year for four years to The Ohio State University. Samuel was shell-shocked as was his father, and it wasn t until his father called Dan back that the news really sunk in and they realized Samuel s life was forever changed. The Ronald C. Sullivan Scholarship Fund was established in August of 2016 and provides scholarship grants to Catholic students who attend or will be attending The Ohio State University. They must also be an active member of Columbus, Ohio parishes St. Andrew, St. Agatha, Our Lady of Victory, or St. Christopher, or have primary residence in Grandview Heights, Marble Cliff, Upper Arlington, and other select areas of Columbus, Ohio. The Catholic Foundation receives over a hundred scholarship applications for the 21 scholarship funds they steward every year. Out of those who applied for the Sullivan Scholarship, Kurth said It was nice to see someone who highlighted the faith component in the application. Many students had good grades and good recommendations, but Samuel s stood out because of his faith. Samuel Mahle and his family, parents - Ken and Leslie Mahle and younger brother- John, are members of St. Andrew Parish in Columbus, Ohio. Samuel graduated in the Spring of 2018 from Upper Arlington High School and has been accepted to The Ohio State University s engineering program. When asked why he wanted to attend The Ohio State University, he said it was because it is one of the top 30 engineering schools in the country and he would like to be closer to home. It was obvious that this is a very close and loving family who is incredibly supportive and proud of Samuel s CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 What s Inside: s c h o l a r s h i p s Awarding over $142,000 t h e mart h a s Grant Recipients pag e 4 pag e 5

2 A Message From Our CEO loren brown president and ceo Dear Friends, I am so pleased to present to you this Summer edition of Blessings as it highlights many wonderful examples of the Holy Spirit moving throughout our Catholic diocese and surrounding community. In another record-breaking year, over $15 million was distributed this past fiscal year ending June 30, In doing so, I am pleased to say that The Catholic Foundation has now granted nearly $150 million since inception, all of which provides for the needs throughout the 23-counties in our diocese. I would like to take a moment to call attention to our St. Martha Giving Circle, affectionately known as The Marthas. The Marthas began in 2015 and is the only women s giving circle in Ohio that ensures that member activities and those receiving money from the fund, are in alignment with Catholic values and beliefs. The group began because we saw a need. A need for Catholic women to have the opportunity and means to learn about the needs throughout our diocese and how to personally impact those needs. In fact, to-date, The Marthas have granted over $117,000 since 2015 and are looking to grow and give even more. I can t tell you enough how blessed and in awe I am of the women in this group who are continually inspired to give charitably and educate themselves about the needs of our diocese and community. I encourage everyone reading this edition of Blessings to learn more about what The Marthas do, who they are, how you and/or a friend can become a member, and how The Catholic Foundation can support your legacy and philanthropic goals. 3 c ov e r sto ry continued You must live and breathe the faith so that it becomes second nature. -samuel mahle accomplishments. His mother, Leslie, said We can t express enough the appreciation and gratitude to The Catholic Foundation for this scholarship. Samuel s hard work has paid off and it is wonderful to see him be recognized for that. Samuel s father, Ken added, We saw the scholarship in the Upper Arlington List of Scholarships and then in our parish bulletin, when we got your phone call we were just dumbfounded. It was amazing. Samuel is a good student with a 4.1 GPA. He has many extracurricular activities which include attending daily mass at St. Andrew, a member of the Dawn Patrol altar server group, runs track and cross country, is a Face Forward ambassador, a member of Future Business Leaders of America, German Club, Honor Society, Peer Tutors, and the Cum Laude Association. He is a part time employee at Scioto Country Club, a three-year volunteer for the Gemmary s Tennessee mission, and coach of the Upper Arlington School District Optimist Association basketball team. asked if he had any last thoughts, he said Having faith in my life is normal - a normal thing that people should to embrace and thrive upon. My parents never pushed me into any of this, I do this on my own. I go to mass daily and I have done so for the past two years. I was moved by the Holy Spirit and I now have fellowship with a group of guys that also go to mass every day. We make it a part of our everyday life. You must live and breathe the faith so that it becomes second nature. I love going. Samuel s story is a great example of why scholarship and endowment funds are created. These funds ensure our Catholic legacy and our Catholic future. 6 k y r i e bequest society (k b s ) Remembering Our Catholic Faith The mission of the Kyrie Bequest Society (KBS) is to recognize those individuals who have notified The Catholic Foundation of their plan to leave a future gift through a bequest, trust, life insurance policy, retirement plan, or charitable gift annuity through the Foundation. Specific parishes, schools, or organizations may be designated as beneficiaries. The Catholic Foundation is excited that 2018 marks the 15th Anniversary of the establishment of the KBS. The name of the society was derived from the Kyrie Eleison, which is sometimes sung or recited during the celebration of the Mass. The Kyrie is the prayer of Catholics imploring the Lord s mercy. The naming of the society represented the mercy we all seek from our Heavenly Father, and the mercy we extend to our brothers and sisters on earth. It is an appropriate recognition of men and women who have made a lasting gift to the Church before their ultimate union with God. The society, which started with approximately 25 individuals, has now grown to nearly 400 faithful who have notified the Foundation that they plan to remember the church in their end of life plans. The society allows the Foundation to thank these Catholics now for a gift that they will leave in the form of an insurance or retirement plan beneficiary designation, a bequest, trust, charitable gift annuity designation, or other. In addition to being recognized in print publications and on the Foundation s website, members are invited to a special annual mass and luncheon with the Bishop, receive a blessed KBS pin, inspire others to make a meaningful gift, and have peace of mind knowing that causes you care about will be supported perpetually through your generosity. We want to take this opportunity to thank the current members of the Kyrie Bequest Society for your thoughtful planning. If you are not a member of the society but have remembered your parish, school, or other Catholic ministry in your end of life planning through the Foundation, please let us know so we can appropriately welcome you as a new member of the Kyrie Bequest Society. OCTOBER 22 Please mark your calendars for the 2018 KBS Mass and Luncheon which will be Monday, October 22 and held at the Pontifical College Josephinum. More details to follow! 7 g r a n t s The Catholic Foundation Has Another Record-Breaking Year In Distributing Grants $ 15 GRANTS MILLION The Catholic Foundation celebrates another consecutive year for record-breaking impact. In the fiscal year ending on June 30, 2018, the Foundation distributed over 1,700 grants totaling over $15 million. It has been another year of tremendous generosity and growth. said Loren Brown, President & CEO of The Catholic Foundation. However, the true blessings lie in the amount of souls touched by the resources of The Catholic Foundation. In fiscal year 2018, The Catholic Foundation awarded over $15 million in grants to support our four pillars of focus: Education, Parish Life, Social Services, and Vocations. Among the grant recipients was Our Lady of Peace, which received funding to replace their lighting system and install a new boiler for the church. Due to these changes and updates, energy costs have decreased 40% from $3,000 a month to $1,800. The church is not only brighter but also safer and The Catholic Foundation is honored to support Our Lady of Peace. For example, through the Responsive Grant cycle alone, The Catholic Foundation provided funding to help programs impacting over 300,000 individuals in the Diocese of Columbus. These programs include food pantries, adult faith formation, tuition assistance for our Catholic schools, and energy efficiency projects for our parishes. Through the Endowment process, funding from The Catholic Foundation helped to support Diocesan seminarians at the Pontifical College Josephinum. In May of 2018, five new priests were ordained to serve the Columbus Diocese and each new priest will serve more than 250,000 parishioners over the next 25 years. Dan Kurth, Director of Grants and Community Impact said, None of this would have been possible without the incredible support from our donors. We owe them our sincere and heartfelt gratitude. We have been called to serve and give, Brown said. and I am truly inspired and encouraged by what this new level of granting has produced. Lives have been touched, opportunities for our youth to grow and receive a Catholic education has grown, awareness and support for those discerning a religious life have increased, and overall support has been given to those in need. As one of the oldest and largest Catholic foundations in the country, The Catholic Foundation has distributed nearly $150 million in the diocese since Look for more details on the impact of the Foundation in the upcoming Annual Report. board of trustees Christine Poth [Chair] Our Lady of Victory, Columbus Andrew D.
