1 WOLFTRACKS The Saint Paul s School February 28, 2011 Covington, Louisiana Gentlemen, Letter from the Alumni Director This past month has been a busy and exciting one at Saint Paul s. Our Soccer Wolves won their fourth State Soccer Championship by defeating Jesuit 2 to 1 in New Orleans on Saturday, February 26th. The Wrestling Team finished fourth in state with two members winning individual championships, and one wrestler selected to the All-State Academic Wrestling Team. The basketball team ended their season in the first game of the playoffs against Airline. Baseball, golf, lacrosse, power lifting, tennis and track are getting into full swing. The varsity Iron Wolves, power lifting team, brought home the Regional Championship, and are preparing for the state meet, while the junior varsity team competed well on February 26 th. The second group of juniors head to Manresa to make a voluntary silent retreat. The Saint Paul s Young Lawyers brought home a championship, with one of our students being selected the Outstanding Young Lawyer. Activity continues as the third quarter draws to a close, with Mardi Gras weekend a busy one for the Marching Wolves who have already marched in parades and still have Orpheus, Endymion and Bacchus to look forward to. The Math Wolves are winning tournaments all over the South, bringing home numerous individual awards. This was an exciting month for Saint Paul s and the coming months should be just as exciting. I hope everyone has a safe and joyous Mardi Gras and don t forget about the Ozone Spring Run and the 2nd Annual Crawfish Cook-Off on Saturday, March 19 th. 3 March 19 th 27th Annual Ozone Spring Run Races begin at 8:00AM under the Saint Paul s Arch. This event includes: a half mile Fun Run, a Two Mile Run and a 10K Run. The 15th Street Flyers will direct all of the race details. Awards for the various races and red beans and rice will be distributed after completion of the 10K run. This race is a Crescent City Classic qualifier on the north shore. Proceeds from the event help to support the community programs of the Saint Paul s Alumni Association. Crawfish Cook-Off benefitting Hope House Saint Paul s Alumni Association will host this event with Hope House on our campus. It will begin immediately following the Ozone Spring Run at approximately 11:00 AM. Plans for thirty, five member teams are being made. Each team boils 180 pounds of crawfish with the traditional trimmings. Judges will determine the winners and trophies will be awarded. This will be a family event with activities for children and live music. Proceeds from the event will benefit Hope House and Saint Paul s Alumni Association. We failed to identify Mr. Daigle s father-in-law as Mr. Harold Dufour, Sr. father of Harold Dufour, Jr. 83 and Mark Dufour 87. For many years, Mr. Dufour managed the school buses which drove scores of Saint Paul s students between Hammond and Covington. Often, he would have to drive the late bus by himself. 5 School News On Wednesday, February 2 nd, the nation celebrated national signing day with 1000 s of high school seniors signing commitments to their respective schools for next year. Saint Paul s was lucky enough to celebrate its largest signing day when five seniors from three separate sports signed with different universities. Senior catcher Alex Cuntz committed to the Belhaven University Blazers in Jackson, Mississippi. Cuntz is the first of a strong senior baseball class to sign with a school for next year. Cuntz plans to go into Athletic Administration with a focus in coaching. The Cuntz family also celebrates the signing of Alex s twin sister Katherine to the University of Louisiana Monroe soccer team. After a long and highly publicized recruitment all-state defensive lineman Mickey Johnson decided to sign with the Louisiana State University Tigers. Mickey joins one the nation s top recruiting classes at LSU including #1 ranked defensive tackle Anthony Johnson from O. Perry Walker. Johnson hopes to be a major factor in an LSU defensive line that has a history of producing great players. Two time all-state soccer player Adrian McInnis received a Division-1 scholarship from the Furman University Paladins in Greenville, South Carolina. McInnis is currently leading the second ranked Saint Paul s soccer team in the state playoffs. The soccer Wolves also expect several more signings in the upcoming weeks. All district wide out Jermaine Sams signed with the Southern Methodist University Mustangs in Dallas, Texas. Sams was highly recruited after leading the Wolves with 700 yards receiving and eight touchdowns. Sams has also received offers from Arkansas and Arizona. Senior linebacker and all-state honorable mention Tyler Tourelle received a scholarship from local Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond. Out of all my choices it was best for me, says Tourelle. Indoor Track Saint Paul's Indoor Track Team, consisting of six students, placed in the top ten of the state at the recent meet held in Baton Rouge. The Wolves managed a ninth place finish in the competition with thirty-two other schools. The team was recognized for their outstanding achievement at the Principal's St. Paul Assembly on February 22. Standing are Scott Brewster, Confer Christian Bergeron, and Trey Weiss. Seated are: Kraemer Jackson, Cameron Robichaux, and Zack Albright. Albright placed fourth in the 1600 meter Brick from Dixon Hall with a time of 4:43. Brewster placed fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:03, and Jackson paced fifth in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:32. Robichaux pole vaulted to a height of thirteen feet, placing seventh. The 800 meter relay team of Albright, Bergeron, Brewster, and Weiss placed fourth as well. Wolftracks Page 6

7 Wrestling-Parish Champions As many of the winter sports begin to wrap up, the Wrestling Wolves move into the final meets of the year. Saint Paul s hosted the St. Tammany Parish Championship meet on Saturday, February 5, and for the 13th time in fifteen years the Wolves came out victorious. The Wolves and the Skippers of Mandeville High School were in close competition despite the Wolves qualifying fourteen wrestlers for the finals. In the end, however, the Wolves were able to pull away with a commanding lead after nine wrestlers took first place in their respective weight class. We lost parish my freshman year and that has always stuck with me, says senior Reagan Reed who came in first in the 171 lb. weight class. Saint Paul's Wrestling team finished the season with fourth place ranking at the state meet in Bossier City. The group had a record eight place winners and amassed the second highest state tournament point total in school history. Individual winners included: Jordan Peterson 112 lbs, sixth place; Connor Campo 130 lbs, fifth place; Chris Arms 160 lbs, fourth place; James Cavaliere 145 lbs, third place; Richard Stewart 125 lbs, third place; Reagan Reed 171 lbs, second place; and Ryan Seals 119 lbs and Korey Miller 152 lbs brought home state championship titles. Reagan Reed was awarded with a plaque by the LHSAA for being named to the composite academic allstate team. Wolftracks Page 7

8 The four seniors on the Saint Paul's Wrestling Team took time to thank their parents for the dedication and support they demonstrated over the past years. The mothers of the seniors were presented with a gift and the traditional yellow rose. 10 Spring Concerts On May 9 th, 2011 at 7:00 pm in the student center, Saint Paul s Band will hold its annual concert. This year s concert will be one the best in Saint Paul s one hundred year history. If you missed last year s concert, then you missed a spectacular event. This year the Concert Band and Jazz Band will have extended performances. The Saint Paul s Saxophone Quartet and the African Percussion group will also perform. General Admission tickets will be $5 and reserved seating will be $15. Tickets will go on sale April 1 st administration office during the day, and at Braswell s Drugs. All proceeds go toward supporting the Saint Paul s Marching Wolves and Golden Blues. Performance by Andrew Moran On May 16th, 2011 at 7:00pm, Mr. Andrew Moran, Saint Paul s Band Director, will be holding a concert in the theater of Saint Paul s School. Andrew Moran is an independent percussion artist/ clinician. Andrew received his Masters in Music Performance from Southeastern Louisiana University where he studied with Kevin Estoque. While at Southeastern Louisiana University, he held the position as Graduate Teaching Assistant under Paul Frechou. Before moving to Louisiana, Andrew attended Kent State University in Kent, Ohio where he received his Bachelors of Music Education and Music Performance under Professor of Percussion, Ted Rounds. This concert will highlight original music compositions. Several musicians from Southeastern Louisiana University, Saint Paul s School and the local community will join Andrew in the concert. Admission to this concert is free; offerings at the concert from those who wish to contribute will go toward supporting music programs at Saint Paul s School. Saint Paul's Class of 2011 made a special presentation of an engraved graduation ring to Brother Raymond Bulliard, Principal of Saint Paul's school as a part of the Centennial Activities. 11 LA-041 ROTC Saint Paul s Corps of Cadets visited Louisiana State University on February 11 th. It was hosted by the Air Force Senior AROTC unit at LSU, where briefings were received from all the service ROTCs along with school representatives from admissions and student life. Lunch was held at the on-campus cafeteria, The 459, followed by a march to the drill field. An address was given to the cadets from Saint Paul s alumnus Cadet Michael Golden 10. The Lasallian Youth Leaders made it their mission in February to help the Covington food Bank regain serviceable levels of food to help those in need. The LYL decided to focus its efforts on dried rice, beans and cereals but it did collect canned goods as well. The drive was led by junior Luke Bissel and sophomore Lyle Manion.
