1 Rotary International District 7390 John Kramb, Governor April 2016 Maternal & Child Health Month Fellow Rotarians, Everybody has a mother. Mothers brought us into the world, mothers took care of us, mothers typically raised us. At least for my generation. We depended on Mom to ensure that we were healthy and well-fed. At least, in America. But consider what Rotary International has to say about world-wide Maternal and Child Health issues: "Our members improve access to essential medical services for mothers and their children. These efforts are aimed at reducing the number of children under age five who die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation a figure that is currently estimated at 7 million. According to another estimate, more than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. Our members provide education, immunizations, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease." Just think about it. Seven Million preventable deaths of children. Improving the health of mothers. Proper nutrition, adequate health care, and improved sanitation can save the world. The child we save today may be the next generation's peace keeper, or invent a cure for cancer. One thing really upsets me. And that is uninformed celebrities who still say that vaccinations cause autism. How can they, in good faith, say that? How can they be so irresponsible? My heart goes out to any one who suffers from any debilitating disease. But let's let science determine our course of action, not some unknowledgeable actor. But then, we are Rotarians. Improving the health of people is what we do. We feed the hungry. We immunize children. We examine eyes and teeth. And we provide clean water and proper sanitation around the world. Because we are Rotarians. Because we care. GRANT TRAINING SEMINAR Join us at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg (1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill) on THURSDAY, April 21, 2016. Cost is $30 per Rotarian!

This seminar will qualify your Club to apply for any Grants in 2016-17. Another training session will be held in September 2016. You are only required to attend one of the trainings.

2 GRANT TRAINING SEMINAR Join us at the Radisson Hotel Harrisburg (1150 Camp Hill Bypass, Camp Hill) on THURSDAY, April 21, Cost is $30 per Rotarian! The seminar will begin with registration and a buffet dinner from 5:30 p.m. until 6:15 p.m. The information session will begin promptly at 6:15 p.m. The seminar will conclude by 8:15 p.m. This is the official Rotary Grant Training seminar that all Clubs must receive to be certified to apply for either Global Grants or Club Foundation Grants. This seminar will qualify your Club to apply for any Grants in Another training session will be held in September You are only required to attend one of the trainings. Please remember that attendance at a Grant Training Seminar is required within a year prior to submitting an application for a Global Grant or a Club Foundation Grant. All Grants now require a 3-person committee. This should be a club expense for your entire grant committee to attend. Please register your committee by April 8, 2016! The Adams County Young Professionals and Rotary Club of Gettysburg donated $405 to South Central Community Action Programs, Inc. on March 10.

6 GETTYSBURG March was Rotary Literacy Month and the traditional time for the Rotary Club of Gettysburg s Dictionary Distribution Project. The object of the Rotary Dictionary Project is to give every third grade student in the Gettysburg Club s service area a personal dictionary of their very own that will serve them at least through elementary and middle school. Many teachers see this as a key to better reading, speech, and writing. These skills will improve student performance in other subjects as well. Receiving the dictionaries from Rotary members is beneficial to students in other ways. The young people meet successful adults in their community who care enough about them to purchase these dictionaries and come to their school to present them personally. HERSHEY On Tuesday, March 8, Hershey Rotary Club members prepared supper at the Ronald McDonald House, serving families of children being treated at Hershey Medical Center. LITITZ Rotary Club of Lititz President Barry Miller presented a contribution of $2,000 to Friendship Community Director of Community Development Cynthia Beebe. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self. The Rotary Club of Lititz fulfills these goals of Rotary International by serving the local community, as well as supporting the various overseas projects of the Rotary Foundation. The Lititz Club gifted $2,000 to this 44-year old Christian organization that supports Individuals with developmental disabilities. The grant will be applied towards the purchase of an automatic door opener at one of the community homes allowing easier access for the Residents who are using wheelchairs. Friendship Community provides residential and support services to 140 Individuals and their Families living throughout Lancaster and Lebanon Counties. Programs are offered which promote positive relationships, integrity, spirituality, capabilities, and community integration. Friendship Community holds the distinction of opening the first group home in Lancaster County. More information about how you can support both of these organizations can be found at or RED LION/DALLASTOWN AREA "Timeless Treasures" Bike, Car and Truck Show The Rotary Club of Red Lion - Dallastown in conjunction with the Red Lion Area Senior Center are sponsoring a "Timeless Treasures" Bike, Car and Truck Show on April 30, 2016 at the Red Lion Area Senior High School located on Horace Mann Avenue in Red Lion. Hours for the show are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Proceeds from the show will be used to benefit programs conducted by both the Senior Center and the Rotary Club. In addition to the show, a Silent Auction is being held. Included in the items being sold are a Brooks Robinson Orioles Autographed Baseball, a Bill Cower autographed 8x10 photo and frame, a Chuck Knoll Steelers autographed photo and frame and a 3D replica of Penn State Beaver Stadium and many other items. To see all the Silent Auction items visit the Senior Center's website at The Show is being sponsored by more than 30 area companies and individuals. At a recent meeting, the Club recognized several sponsors.
