1 ORIENTATION June 15, 2015 Welcome to Appleby College! On behalf of the Orientation faculty and our student leaders, we are very much looking forward to meeting each of you in person this Fall. All of the information to help prepare for your arrival on Tuesday, September 8, is contained in this e-newsletter. As well, our Residential Life Handbook can be viewed at for all of the important dates and information pertaining to Residential Life. I do, however, want to highlight a few important details for the Orientation Week (September 8-11). Orientation Week is an extremely busy program which is designed to be FUN! In addition to giving each student a warm welcome to Appleby College, you will also be helped with completing many logistical tasks, such as obtaining a laptop, selecting courses, ordering textbooks and a uniform, as well as meeting your advisor and house director. Throughout the Orientation Program, students will stay in temporary boarding rooms on the Appleby campus. This is a great opportunity for our new students to meet each other and to bond as a group prior to moving into their permanent room for the year and the start of school. A fabulous component of the Orientation program for students entering into U2-S2 (grades 10-12) is a weekend camping trip to Pine Crest, located in Ontario s beautiful Muskoka region. This camping trip will take place from Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 20. Students are encouraged to review the camping trip packing list included in this package to ensure they have the proper gear. If a student does not have certain clothes, there will be an opportunity during Orientation Week to purchase necessary items. The Orientation faculty and I have been working on this program for the past year and are excited to make this year a very memorable one for you! We look forward to meeting you on Tuesday, September 8 between 9:30 10:30 a.m. in the Schlesinger Dining Hall. At this time, you and your family will be given your temporary room, have a chance to meet with our Health Centre team, a local representative from the International Student Guardianship Canada (ISGC) program, and Appleby College admissions representatives. You will also have the chance to sign up for a CIBC bank account, purchase Appleby College clothing through InSchoolwear (please me if you require an appointment), and purchase a cell phone and plan if needed. In the meantime, please let me know if you have any additional questions. Over the next few weeks, students are asked to complete the Pre-Boarding survey which can be found by clicking here. New long distance parents will also be receiving a brief survey in July to help plan some of the activities scheduled for this year s Orientation Week excursions. Your participation is completing this survey is appreciated. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL June 15, 2015 Welcome to Appleby College! One of the many wonderful aspects of being Principal is that I get to be one of the first of many to welcome you to Appleby. I m sure that this is an extremely exciting time for you and your family as you prepare to attend Appleby this coming September and I m looking forward to seeing you on campus! During your time at Appleby you will be encouraged to discover and embrace your passions; meet fellow students from around the world; and take part in a variety of life-changing experiences. You will be given the opportunity to explore new ideas and participate in programs both inside and outside of the classroom that will further enhance your character, leadership and confidence, providing you with a solid foundation for future success in life. You can also look forward to the new friendships you will be making that will be sure to last a lifetime as you share a special fellowship and lifelong connection to the school. 3 welcome from appleby parent relations June 15, 2015 Dear New Parents; Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ellen Palmer and I am the Director of Parent Relations. In my role I oversee a number of programs which help to inform and support Appleby s parent community. Over the summer I will be working with the New Parent Committee to provide each new parent with a veteran parent buddy who can help ease the transition into our busy culture. Please expect to hear from your parent buddy sometime by mid-august, at which time he or she will provide you with contact information as well as some reminders about the orientation and welcome events taking place at the beginning of the school year. In the meantime, here are a few dates for you to put in your calendar: Tuesday, September 8: Orientation for New Parents of Long Distance Boarders (9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.) This event allows for parents of long distance boarders new to Appleby to learn more about the residential life experience, our guidance program, and our online resources after moving their children into residence and leaving them to engage in their own orientation program. Included in the day will be a visit to the school s College Shop to purchase gym wear, and following this orientation parents of long distance boarders are invited to attend a dinner at the Principal s Residence from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 8: Orientation Evening for All New Parents (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) This popular event provides all parents of students new to the school with an opportunity to hear more about Appleby from the School Directors and to meet their child s advisor. The evening will begin in the Schlesinger Dining Hall at 7:00 p.m. with a meet and greet with your parent buddy, and end with an opportunity to ask questions of members of our Senior Leadership Team. Wednesday, September 9 and Thursday, September 10: Optional Parent Excursions There will be optional parent excursions planned for these days to allow you to experience some of Ontario s sights and culture during your visit here. More details will follow in July. Friday, September 11: Dinner and Student Talent Performances (Evening) In the evening, you are invited to have dinner with the students and watch their talent performances in Willis Hall. This is a valuable opportunity to see how they are acclimatizing to the Appleby culture. Saturday, September 12: Welcome Back Barbecue (11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) This is an outdoor barbecue lunch held in the Colley Bistro, just after returning boarding students have moved into residence. Hosted by the Appleby College Parents Association (ACPA), this informal social event provides the opportunity for students, teachers, parents and guardians to reconnect with old friends and meet new ones. 4 WELCOme from the House faculty June 15, 2015 Welcome to the Appleby College boarding community! The mission of the Residential Life program is to promote academic, social, cultural and personal growth within a safe, inclusive community, with particular emphasis on the school s six Pillars of Strength. The Residential Life Team continually works to develop the program, by providing a variety of rich experiences that are in-line with the mission. Appleby s boarding program consists of four unique houses: Baillie House, Colley House, Powell s House and Walker House. Each house is led by three house faculty, who live with their families, in houses connected to the residences. In addition to the house faculty, each house also has a team of student leaders and school prefects that help organize and run the numerous events throughout the year. The houses compete annually for the Inter-House Cup, where students are able to demonstrate tremendous house spirit. Later this summer, you will receive more detailed information about the house to which your child has been assigned. It will include information about the physical design of the residence, the motto and philosophy of the house and an introduction of the House Faculty. We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight two important policies, and to ask you to please make note of the required dates found below. 1. Online sign-out and sign-in system for boarders: All boarders will be asked to sign-out and sign-in using an online system any time they leave campus. We would ask that parents / guardians check this system regularily and if required, provide approval of plans. We would also appreciate a response if there are concerns or questions about the plans. Additional details regarding the online sign-in / sign-out system for boarders will be shared in your child s House information package which will be distributed in the summer. 2. Weekly House Meetings: Every Sunday night (Monday nights after school holidays) at 9:30 p.m., boarders are required back in residence to participate in the mandatory weekly house meeting. These meetings serve to inform boarders of upcoming events, facilitate the teaching of the residential curriculum, and promote the sharing of culture with intercultural presentations. Required dates: In addition to the New Boarder Orientation Program that begins on Tuesday, September 8 and runs through to the first day of academic classes on Monday, September 14, over the course of the year there are three additional special community weekends for all boarders one during each of the school s three reporting periods. Community Weekends they are: October 2-3; January 29-30; May All boarders are required to remain in boarding on these weekends. There will be activities planned which will connect to the residential curriculum and build community connections. More details about each of these weekends will be shared during the upcoming school year. House Dinners - each house hosts the boarding community at a fun-filled, themed dinner. These dinners are part of the Inter-House Cup and include spirit and community building activities. Students are asked to return to campus early on these Sundays in time for dinner. The summer edition contains important information regarding the New Boarder and New Parent Orientation programs as well as information on Appleby s school uniform, notices from School Directors, family accommodations and transportation as well as documentation deadlines.
